How not to look a state on a beach holiday

Enzbear · 22/02/2022 20:34

First beach holiday abroad in two years coming up in 3 weeks. Yay.
I've been busy googling some (staged) beachy pictures knowing I never quite pull it off.
But going to give it my best shot anyway-
I'm slim but extremely pale so probably going to start building up a fake tan.
Bought new bikini's and kaftan thing.
Have a few hats as my hair doesn't fair well. Tried beachy waves once, absolute disaster!
Pedi and paint toe nails.
Any other tips? What do you do? Especially with your hair? Products etc?

If you have straight hair this stuff is really good for leaving on during the day (in between swims and sunbathing.) You comb it onto wet hair and then rinse and shampoo it off in the evening.

Zazdar · 23/02/2022 09:53

I don’t actually do anything different to usual (i.e. nothing) apart from apply and reapply sun cream all over. I spend a lot of the time in the sea, snorkelling and swimming, so there doesn’t seem much point.

deadlanguage · 23/02/2022 10:14

There’s nothing wrong with being pale, if doesn’t make you look a state. Leathery skin from sun damage does though so be sure to regularly apply sun cream. Get some nice sunglasses with UV protection as well.

deadlanguage · 23/02/2022 10:15

It, not if^

Anoisagusaris · 23/02/2022 10:18

@Snoopsnoggysnog

I get hair blow dried before I leave then just don’t get it wet all week Blush Also wear my usual makeup but adjust for heat
As someone else said, that is so sad. You’d rather have salon styled hair on holiday than have fun in the water?

Apart from that, do you not need to wash your hair in the heat?

Campervangirl · 23/02/2022 10:22

Lady garden maintenance is a must ✂️ 😁
Then I'd agree with having eyebrows and lashes done, if it's too expensive get a waterproof mascara and a brow pencil, I also like a dab of highlighter on my cheekbones

declutteringmymind · 23/02/2022 10:22

Put your hair in pigtails half way through the day and let it put in the evening. Instant beach waves.

declutteringmymind · 23/02/2022 10:22

Start exfoliating and body brushing too.

violetbunny · 23/02/2022 10:52

Yes to exfoliating, especially if you're going to be self tanning or spray tanning.

I love a bright lipstick for summer holidays. Chanel do some great long wearing ones (Ultra Tenue) with a gloss at the other end that last really well through heat or sipping on cocktails. I always pack a nude lipgloss as well for more low key days. The Bobbi Brown Crushed Oil infused glosses are very nice and there's a great range of neutral shades.

A good facial SPF. I love the Ultra Violette ones, they're really lightweight and non greasy. Tinted moisturiser is also a must!

Skinnymimi · 23/02/2022 11:54

Hey @Snoopsnoggysnog ! It’s ok I do that sometimes! I love getting my hair in the sea but depending on the occasion, I’d rather keep my hair blow dried. 99% of my polished look depends on my blowout!!Grin

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/02/2022 12:23

Oh bugger off everyone having a go at my blow dry. I’m not “one of those mums” - I already said I’d try to keep looking polished for the first half of the week away then after that not really give a toss.
I used to love swimming and love a swim in the sea but as I’ve got older my hair has become very fine and frizzy and chlorine destroys it and ruins the colour. So yes I would avoid getting it wet in the pool if I can. If I’m playing with my DC and get splashed, so be it.

Thanks @Skinnymimi I’m similar to you!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/02/2022 12:27

And this is style and beauty… the question was how not to look a state on a beach holiday. If I let my hair do it’s own thing on a beach holiday I would indeed look at state. At least this way I can only look a state for the second half Smile

HeyLala · 23/02/2022 12:36

@Snoopsnoggysnog

I'm with you on this as I do exactly the same. My hair does not fare well in sunshine and chlorine so I try and eek out my blow dry before swimming etc. then the big hat comes out.

I also try and find a local salon for a blow dry before I come home. In most European resorts I can get a deep conditioning treatment and blow dry for 25 euros so much cheaper than back home.

Happy36 · 23/02/2022 12:57

If Snoopsnoggysnog had said, " I go on holiday with dirty hair and don't bother to do anything with it," I doubt anyone would have judged her and very much doubt whether anyone would have replied rudely. So why such an unkind response to her blowdry?

My dad can't swim so we went in the pool or sea with my mum or alone when we were kids. Did that mean my dad was "one of those dads"? (He's bald, incidentally.) And that we didn't have brilliant holidays with him doing other stuff?

Do we all have to be paranoid now that if we don't spend all day submerged in water or dare to be seen with decent hair on holiday that - some - other women are judging us ?

Uptoongirl · 23/02/2022 13:05

Similar to other posters, LVL lashes, gel mani/pedi and eyebrows. I've been using Lumea and that's been a game changer, last holiday I shaved on the first day and didn't need to worry about hair for the rest of the 2 weeks. As a bonus it also meant my legs tanned for the first time ever due to not shaving off a few layers of skin everyother day.

I also like to have a pack of baby wipes for my face and use one just before re-applying suncream - always a mattifying one specifically for the face so I am protected but not an oily mess.

MimosaSunrise · 23/02/2022 13:20

Very interested in this thread after a recent holiday where I felt self-conscious about windblown hair and mosquito-bitten legs. I’m not personally bothered about looking especially groomed, but looking unusually bruised, battered and unkempt is another matter. Went on a catamaran cruise and despite tying hair up had wispy bits of shorter hair sticking up in all directions after - nobody else on the excursion looked like this. I need holiday style tips.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 23/02/2022 13:21

Jus started your thread OP but excellent subject - I always, every time look Holiday Shite Grin

SugarAndCoffee · 23/02/2022 13:25

Sun cream on. Hair cut so I can tie it back but short enough to not have to worry about it getting tangled.

Then go with it and have fun get sandy get your clothes dirty. Swim in the sea. Every body is a beach ready body.

deadlanguage · 23/02/2022 13:31

@MimosaSunrise I really recommend Incognito mosquito repellent! It’s very effective and it has the bonus over DEET of not damaging your clothes, sunglasses etc if you get some on them.
For your wispy hairs, are they along the hairline? I have those and use an Alice band to keep them down.

Henryandhishoover · 23/02/2022 13:38

Doesn't everyone tie their hair back on holiday anyway? Or is it just me? Im either in the pool or too flipping hot to be bothering with my hair being down or then trying to use the dryer/straighteners to style it.

I'd say keep off the booze and too much food while away to help you look less bloated, but that's just me.

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 23/02/2022 14:20

Gel mani and pedi, and this year I will also get lash extensions. I've had them done in the past and the aftermath isn't great, but for a beach holiday they are fantastic (and I do have LVL usually and still prefer extensions - natural ones though, to LVL). Tint and shape eyebrows, wax wherever you need waxing. I also get regular keratin blow dries as those remove fizz from my hair.

On holiday I take a big floppy hat, hair scarves, big sunglasses, lots of fun costume jewellery, sparkly make up, and anything else I may fancy putting on in the evening (although most evenings I'm bare faced if we don't go out). I also use factor 50 year round including while on holiday.

peaceanddove · 23/02/2022 14:21

I can recommend SVR Blur facial sunscreen. Very sheer, SPF50 and it creates a soft focus effect on your skin.

As for those mocking our preference to looking groomed on holiday - wearing lipstick and having a good time aren't mutually exclusive.

WhoppingBigBackside · 23/02/2022 14:45

Take a longish skirt or smartish thin trousers for going out in the evening

Rina66 · 23/02/2022 14:46

I like an overshirt over my costume, they're so versatile, I'll also wear them over here. Overshirts always look good with hats too.

A really good beach bag, that goes with my swimwear and cover ups.

Tan flat sandals and tan across body bag.

Olaplex oil for hair and Aveda anti humectant pomade - it repels moisture and is great in humidity, use sparingly! Very moisturising shampoo with hair mask to follow as a conditioner - I find a moisturising shampoo does more for my hair than any conditioner, especially on holiday when you're washing hair every day.

I also take a selection of bright lipsticks, red, fuchsia and coral all look good with a tan.
Guerlain or Beauty Pie bronzer.
Waterproof mascara with eyelash curlers - Suratt are amazing.
Waterproof eyeliner - Benefit

I'm loving these overshirt looks....
