My hands are awfully rough! Help!

Ashamedtoshakehands · 22/02/2022 15:00

I moisturise daily, use hand moisturising gloves, I drink lots of water, I take collagen supplements and other vitamins, I eat well!!

Why are my hands so awful??

I'm embarrassed when DP wants to hold my hand, I don't wear my engagement ring because it's such a beautiful ring that my hand don't do it justice!!

I'm getting married in a few months and the thought of these hands in my pictures make me sad.

I want to go for a manicure but I'm so embarrassed to.

I've used the work hands cream and I've nearly finished the tub but still have crappy hands and brittle nails!!

Please help by recommending something that will work so I can have nice soft feminine hands, finally!!

I once worked at a stables and used Germolene as hand cream. It certainly helped a lot. Savlon is good too.

Happydays321 · 22/02/2022 15:10

Rubber gloves for any cleaning/washing up.
Hand cream by every year sink, handbag, use it every time your hands are wet.
Gloves outside except in summer.

My hands split and bleed at the drop of a hat, I can keep them decent by doing all the above.

JaneJeffer · 22/02/2022 15:49

Mix a spoonful of sugar with a spoonful of olive oil and give them a scrub.

WellTidy · 22/02/2022 16:07

The best hand cream by far for me is occitane 20 or 25% Shea butter hand cream and hand balm.

AmbushedByCake1 · 22/02/2022 16:09

Have you tried Working Hands? That's awesome for dealing with really dry skin.

SilverHairedCat · 22/02/2022 16:10

What do you do for a living? Looks as though your hands are being stripped of oils. Are you hands wet or washed a lot? What wash product is used?

Hand cream to soften that up is needed multiple times a day I'm afraid. Maybe try the good stuff - O'Keefes Working Hands is great. Stick it on your pocket and put it on at least hourly if you can.

miltonj · 22/02/2022 16:13

O'keefes working hands or other moisturiser but then lock it in with Vaseline! Also if you've been using alcohol hand gel, just stop. Mine are really bad right now too, my knuckles actually bled yesterday, always happens when I'm pregnant. So I should take my own advice really!

freckledsloth · 22/02/2022 16:14

Aldi Lacura Intensive hand cream sorted out my rough hands when all else failed to, it's dirt cheap too. Might be worth a shot?

1Wanda1 · 22/02/2022 16:22

You need Weleda Skin Food. My hands go like yours in winter. I've tried O'Keefe's, Neutrogena, Eucerin, Aveeno, Clarins... but Weleda Skin Food is The One for very dry hands.

EatSleepReplete · 22/02/2022 16:22

You say you use hand cream daily - how much, how often? Once a day, several times? Overnight? If overnight do you just put a normal amount on or do you really slather it on (is this when you use the gloves?)

Also, what cream do you use? Ideally, use one based on vegetable oils or beeswax. Mineral oil based creams are less moisturising. Mineral oil is a decent barrier against moisture loss, but if the skin of your hands isn't making enough of their own natural oil to begin with, a cream that's primarily based on mineral oil is potentially going to make things worse, as it discourages the skin from continuing to make its own oil.

I use any cream that's based on castor oil, beeswax, sweet almond oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, etc. I apply them several times daily & certainly every night before bed. Rub in well (gently) around the nails. I don't bother with washing up gloves (but I would if I was having problems with excessive dryness etc). I've also recently got some moisture gloves, it helps prevent get the cream on the bedding.

If your hands are really struggling then it's worth trying La Roche Posay Cicaplast for hands. I had problems a couple of years ago (too much sanitiser) & this helped.

CheeseAndHackers · 22/02/2022 16:39

My sympathies, my hands aren't rough but are constantly parched and dry no matter what/how much product I apply.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 22/02/2022 16:44

Working hands. About £5 for a tub on Amazon. Mine crack / go flaky every single year as the seasons change and this totally sorted them out.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 22/02/2022 16:46

I have this problem sometimes. The Body Shop's hemp hand cream/protector always does the trick.

Cocomelonearworm · 22/02/2022 16:51

I like Burt's Bees almond hand cream (comes in a glass jar). It is so thick and greasy that it's really an ointment and only suitable for slathering on overnight. You can buy gloves to wear overnight too that will help lock the moisture in.

Do you use hand sanitiser much? That dries out my hands awfully. Wet wipes are a bit better.

Ashamedtoshakehands · 22/02/2022 17:55

I'm not working, I'm a sahm and I hate using rubber gloves, I find I drop things because they're too big so I get a smaller size and they break! Can never find the right pair!

I currently use aveeno, dove hand cream and use the okeefe working hands one at bed time.

I moisturise throughout the day but just a little bit each time as I don't like my hands being greasy then at night once the kids are in bed and I'm on the sofa I sit moisturising my hands then use okeefe at bedtime to slather it on.

My knuckles bleed too.

I do use hand gel quite a bit especially when out and about.

Thanks for tips! I'll try a couple out!!

I swear by this www.tammason.co.uk/ as my hands are constantly in water

BeaLola · 22/02/2022 18:28

For sanitiser because I have to use it daily I go with Aronatherapy associates one - yes it is £12 but cheaper the more you buy and lasts ages and has not made my skin dry - I have very dry skin

I use an oil on my cuticles every day - and I use hand cream throughout the day - aveeno, loccitane, Clarins and others - for me it's about often and regularly

If I can remember once a week I put on hand cream and use cotton gloves on top

Once or twice a week I use a little grainy scrub on them before I apply handcream

I have never had great nails - due to iron deficiency at mo they are not great - I have found keeping them shorter and neater makes them look better and I use a sheer nail base coat over them now and again when working

Teaseall · 23/02/2022 00:00

I absolutely swear by Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream concentrated, doesn't matter if it's the scented or unscented one. I don't wear gloves for anything and always seem to have my hands in water!

I squeeze a large pea sized amount on the back of one hand, squidge the back of my other hand on it, then rub my hands together finishing with a couple of claps. Usually do it when I remember once I've sat down to watch a bit of tv in the evening.

It's a bit sticky for a minute or two then just seems to sink in so you not left with that greasy feeling which I hate, much prefer it to o'keefes which I also use occasionally.

Their body lotion is fab too for dealing with snake skin shins FootballSmile

Whatliesbeneath707 · 23/02/2022 03:55

Body Shop Hemp. Strong smelling but very good - evens heals those cracks in the skin.

HaroldAndEthelMeaker · 23/02/2022 04:08

Another vote for L'Occitane, the almond one is preferred by my MiL. Look at what you are washing your hands with as well as creams. That is the starting point.

Crookedman · 23/02/2022 06:40

Urea cream My DH hands are severely dry and eucerin hand cream has really helped.

Mmmmdanone · 23/02/2022 06:43

I once slept a few nights with good hand cream and covered with thin latex gloves. Worked wonders. Just make sure your not allergic to latex.

BlackCoffeeInAPoolOfSunshine · 23/02/2022 06:44

Id stick to one hand cream only for a few weeks and see whether you get better or worse. I was using one at work and a different one at home and finally realised that the one at work was making my hands worse! I was mildly alkergic to it I guess. In fact only the beeswax/ Shea butter ones seem to help me - anything else makes my hands worse.

Also liquid soap is the devil. Since ive switched to bar soap I only need hand cream in the evening.

At the start of the pandemic my hands aged about 20 years and were so damaged they bled and those were the problems - liquid soap and trying to treat liquid soap damage with a handcream which was actually making them even worse!

BuddhaAtSea · 23/02/2022 06:52

Lansinoh, cotton gloves on and keep them overnight.

Ashamedtoshakehands · 23/02/2022 11:14

I've tried the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream concentrated before and it makes no difference sadly.
And I cant bare the thought of strong smelling creams, i have quite a sensitive nose and that would really put me off using a cream.
I do have palmolive bar soaps as I did notice the liquid soap especially the cheap ones was making my hands worse especially at the start of the pandemic. I also have the carex liquid soaps but i do try to stick to the bar instead.
I've been on amazon and have ordered the weleda skin food, germolene and cotton gloves to wear at night and I've added rubber gloves to the shopping list as the ones I have are large and just too flappy, I'm just going to have to persevere with all these tips for a while and hope that something works.

thank you all for your time and tips Smile
