Lovely old Bohemian things!

I really love some of the styles and interiors from the early 1900's to late 1920's, Edwardian architecture and whatnot.

I'm also really fascinated by Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury group, so watched the 3 part series 'Life in Squares' last night. And oh did I love the settings and clothes!

Where oh where could I source some of this stuff? I love the gowns, patterns, details, and would probably incorporate it for loungewear, pottering in summer garden, etc.
I don't like the idea of polyester recreations so can't imagine where to look, apart from ebay, but it seems to take ages to tunnel through the crap on there....

I particularly like the long cardi's, gowns, cotton underthings, jewellery...

Are there any online stores that sell good quality stuff like this, or would it have to be antique/vintage? Any suggestions as to how I could recreate similar styles?

Some things along those lines here, although it crosses over with other types of boho www.jabayard.com

You might also be lucky on Etsy, I think - some of the things small makers share on there are incredible.

Anthropologie

Just had a look through the website I linked to and they have managed to make a lot of their stuff look godawful but they do often have lovely things in their shop so worth persevering.

callingon · 19/02/2022 11:48

Toast! I have a sort of corduroy tunic that is half monk/Bloomsbury set.

ConfusedParticle · 19/02/2022 11:55

Thank you! Will check out Jabayard.

I had wondered about etsy, is there a way to tailor searches to uk only?

I had thought of Toast, but i think the lines are less flowy, more 'blockish' if that makes sense? Ive seen a few nice gowns in the past, will have another look!

@ConfusedParticle
With Vintage, you won't get much wearable Edwardian/pre-20s gear that's affordable and/or wearable condition.
Repro is your best bet there. Although looking for 20s jewellery, beaded bags, carpet bags etc., sometimes comes up with the goods.

For vintage, my main vintage tip is to look at 70s stuff. During the 70s, there was quite the Edwardian influence - so searching for '70s does Edwardian' may bring up some treasures. Etsy is pretty good.

For modern stuff, there's a lot of bias-cut satiny things about at the moment - which is more 30s - but teamed with a wafty kimono and a headscarf might give you the aesthetic you're after.

Have a look at:

Just seen your question - yes, you can filter Etsy to show you only UK sellers.

www.shibumistyle.com/collections/reversible-dressing-gowns

I got one for Christmas, it is gorgeous.

Crucible · 19/02/2022 12:08

Shibumi dressing gowns...

Crucible · 19/02/2022 12:11

@CPL593H beat me to it and I'm jealous. They're gorgeous!

ConfusedParticle · 19/02/2022 12:15

Great advice, thank you!

I recall seeing an old show from the 70/80's called 'How we used to live' - a victorian father brought is adult daughter an exquisite embroidered silk gown back from India (i think), the beauty of which never left my mind!

Will definitely look into 70's stuff/vintage.

I love the men's stuff too in this series - the painter Duncan Grant's clothes remind me of Monty Don.

I do know what you mean about Toast being more blocky - they have gorgeous prints though. I know this is a slightly dick thing to say but a really good way to get this sort of look is to learn to sew! There’s a lot of flowy patterns about and gorgeous fabrics are still being made (I am not good at sewing but telling myself I should get better to make clothes that I want to wear).

Classica · 19/02/2022 12:20

This long thread on what Monty Don would wear if he were a woman might have some good ideas

ConfusedParticle · 19/02/2022 12:28

Brilliant!
Sadly i don't suit 'masculine' styles but wish i did!

As for sewing, I tried ever so hard when i was young, and just can't do it. I know a lot of people think it should be do-able if we persevere, but sometimes it just doesn't work. My aunt is an incredible seamstress and spent a lot of time trying to teach me to sew and knit. It was futile.
I did end up making a living as a painter though, so there's some hope for me, creatively speaking Grin
I wish i could paint these clothes and make them come to life!

Check out The Closet Historian on YouTube. She is a bit eccentric and extremely creative. She has links to other creators also. (There is a whole world/community out there, tbh…) Inspiration for DIY, clothing pattern links, best thrift stores (she is in USA, but may have some UK links.)
Also on YouTube is Karolina Zebrowska who is a Polish fashion history graduate and she has an amazing wealth of knowledge to share. She is also hilarious.
Another fun one who is less “Accurate” in a historical sense, but stunningly beautiful and creative in a Gothic Dita von Teese meets Martha Stewart kind of way is Christine McConnell. She has a YouTube channel and had one season on Netflix, which was awesome. (It’s still there.)

OverTheRubicon · 19/02/2022 12:34

Anthropologie has some similar things.

DelphiniumBlue · 19/02/2022 12:50

I've seen some of things you mention in museum shops, certainly the long cardigans, cotton/lawn shirts and camisoles.www.museumselection.co.uk/clothing-accessories/

ConfusedParticle · 19/02/2022 12:55

A dress caught my eye at Anthropologie - £235 for 99% polyester Shock

Bernardette Banner might interest you.

Here she is talking about historical costume in films - which ones get it right, and which don't.

Here she talks about Edwardian hairstyles and make-up, if that's relevant:

She also has a great many Youtube videos where she shows herself making historical costumes. They might just inspire you to start sewing again!
