Beauty myths i just don't get.

Like someone having 'cheekbones', that this is somehow important as a woman ages (not my opinion!).

That being tall is superior to being short: this persistent idea that taller people look better in clothes. In my own opinion it is posture, not height that makes a difference.

I know there's history regarding height, especially with males, the pecking order and all that, but i am amazed that these ideas still circulate.

But who decided fashion/clothing was best carried off by taller women? It never made sense to me.
It makes some, kinda vague sense for a catwalk, but not in the real world.
If clothes are in proportion, then it's as broad as long to me.

I have also never noticed cheekbones necessarily make someone 'age' better either - whether that's Peter Cushing or Debbie Harry. People tend to look good if they look good (to my mind) regardless their age.

"and all proportions seem to be taken into account, they don't jusy take a whack off the bottom so you left with your ankle in a knee space."

Yes, but not all short people are small everywhere. I just have short legs, the rest of me is normal size so I'd look silly in a petite dress with sleeves that don't reach my hands.

@Kanaloa

I think it’s definitely easier to find well fitting clothing if you are tall. If you’re short you can still definitely look good but it’s harder and often more expensive to find/tailor clothes to fit well.
Definitely not easy finding clothes if you're tall!

Sorry, I know this isn't going to fit all shorter people as everyone is different. I was jusy trying to get across that at least some consideration is taken into account the proportions change in more than just arm/leg length in petite ranges - unlike tall ranges, which are less common and when you do find them are just a lazy extra bit of calf length.

My example of height not making a difference in ordinary life - a friend is very petite, 4 foot range, and she looks stunning in clothes. She mostly buys second hand, and has a bit of a stevie nicks vibe about her. She does have a fab body though, as a personal trainer, and suits literally anything if it is the right size - like all of us i guess?
She seems to be able to throw anything on (including bizarre hats!) and it just works.

Perhaps it's more about posture and the individual. How they carry things off.

We all admire different things too, so it's sort of subjective. My fave physique is sporty, average height, and fit in a horse riding kind of way. However, even though i grew up riding, i tend not to tone well and have always had a fragile, sort of fae-like physique. I would prefer to look more strident, with more.... gravitas! Grin

I think it's each to their own.

Some people are just stylish though & also some people have excellent proportions which helps regardless of height. Kylie Minogue is very in proportion despite being small & I find Kate Middleton often doesn't look right in certain things as she has a long torso & shorter legs despite her height.

Theworldisquiethere · 13/02/2022 13:18

@CrinklyCraggy

Why Gwen?

If you met two people who look facially more or less the same, but one could run upstairs, easily bend to pick something up, sit on the floor to play with a child and the other struggled to get out of the chair, which would you assume was the younger?

So disabled people automatically look old? I’m not even 30 but have issues with my joints and severe back pain which makes things like bending over and getting up from sitting difficult for me.

I know this isn’t what you were deliberately implying but something to think about.

masmoeker · 13/02/2022 15:51

it's all the media isn't...

Delatron · 13/02/2022 20:28

High cheekbones are attractive that’s not a myth.

JFM27 · 14/02/2022 22:53

Hell i must have long legs for a tiny womwn then.if M&S jeans jeggings and trousers petite are too long for people of 5 2.im 4 11 size 6 and perfect length on me.i an quite short waisted but never thought thst short.i must be mostly leg.lol

My beauty myths a suntan on older womens face is not a good look never sunbathed ever.And that grey hair isnt aging, a chic pure silver bob thst looks more platimum blonde might be fine but grey hair apart from thst is aging.Also though very dark hair is aging on older women, a natural fair skinned brunette im now mahogany red.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/02/2022 08:35

That cosmetic surgery like facelifts work, your just pulling old skin tighter. I think you’d be better with a phenol and croton oil peel with a dr personally.

ConfusedParticle · 15/02/2022 10:31

@Delatron

I disagree, so which one if us is more legit?

I wonder why humans are so terrified of subjectivity? Is it some sort of leftover....a vestige of tribal fear, that not being agreed with makes you lesser in the pack or...something ?

OP posts:
ConfusedParticle · 15/02/2022 10:35

I also think a lot of women like to put their own bodies and looks down, and insist that their short legs or their particular physique is lesser. And then it becomes a sort of poisoned mantra that has to be regarded as 'fact' so that other women with these traits might feel substandard too.

I will say one thing - I would rather look older, shorter, even fatter, and with no fucking cheekbones at all than age with bitterness and a grasping envy of youth.

OP posts:
Delatron · 15/02/2022 12:20

@ConfusedParticle
Of course you can disagree. But traditionally certain features are deemed as attractive. So big eyes, high cheekbones, full lips. There’s science behind it. But on a personal level you can disagree.

Iamthewombat · 15/02/2022 12:29

So the OP is allowed to disagree? That’s very generous of you.

Cheekypeach · 15/02/2022 12:32

OP, not in a facetious way but has something happened lately to upset you on this topic? Your thread doesn’t seem to have been started in the spirit of chat & debate but because you seem like something has really irritated you & now you’re trying to berate us over it.

Delatron · 15/02/2022 13:56

OP does seem cross about ‘fucking cheekbones’

withlotsoflove · 15/02/2022 14:00

I have high cheekbones on a tiny face and look at least 10/12 years younger than my 50. I know you’ll then get all the bitchy “ oh you probably don’t!” However, my cheekbones hold it all up.
I also found out recently that having 4 teeth taken out (for my braces)would have helped too.
However, nothing lasts forever… and l imagine that shortly l will probably just melt away! 😂

KimDeals · 15/02/2022 14:08

I’m sorry but I think the height thing is true - clothes DO drape better on tall people in the flesh and tall people are not proportionately the same as a shorter person (eg a size 10, 5ft 10 person is naturally longer limbed than a size 10 5ft 3 person). But I agree posture is the key. Tall coupled with great posture - jackpot.

LaBellina · 15/02/2022 14:11

@GettingStuffed

That we should look like early twenties for our entire adult lives. Many people spend a fortune injecting poison into their face whilst forgetting hands age too
This ^^ it’s a dangerous myth that the beauty industry is trying to perpetuate, that only those who look no older then 25 are attractive. It’s not achievable even if you have lots of money to spend on plastic surgery and cosmetics and it takes a huge toll on many women’s sense of self worth and financial resources.
SarahJessicaPorker · 15/02/2022 14:13

Ooooooh interesting thread op!

I'm on the taller side of average and I never liked it. I always towered over my friends. I was almost always one of the tallest girls. Funnily enough, some of my best girl friends are my height. But, I think it makes me look thinner than I really am iyswim. I've had people argue with me that I couldn't be the size I am. Maybe it's politeness or maybe I wear my clothes a bit too big, but whatever. I'm overweight (not obese) and I look OK for it.

Agree with the ott 'drag queen'-esque make up and very white teeth. I also personally don't like veneers. I met a man with obvious, white veneers and dyed black hair and he looked nuts tbh.

I also don't agree that all women look better with long hair!

LaBellina · 15/02/2022 14:18

I also don't agree that all women look better with long hair!

Long hair needs more shampoo, conditioner, styling products, dye etc so again it’s in the interest of those who sell these products to convince women that long hair is the epitome of beauty (I don’t think I’ve ever seen a woman with short hair in a commercial or advertisement for hair products). Audrey Tatou is an example of someone who looks gorgeous with a short haircut. I think it looks actually better on her then long hair.

Cheekypeach · 15/02/2022 14:19

@Delatron

I agree. I hate to do the ‘u ok hun’ thing but I definitely think there’s more to this than general observations.
SarahJessicaPorker · 15/02/2022 14:21

I remember a thread which was on here ages ago and it got deleted; the op was HOPPING mad about "people with dimples thinking they are sooooo fucking cool" or words to that effect. It was quite funny, but very strange. MNHQ had to delete.

Cheekypeach · 15/02/2022 14:23

I have dimples too @SarahJessicaPorker 😱 maybe I need to leave the board..!

That said I also have a big nose and not very nice hands…

SarahJessicaPorker · 15/02/2022 14:23

Omfg @Cheekypeach, you are WELL up yourself Angry🤣
