A complete new wardrobe of clothes with one caveat

You can get a complete new wardrobe of clothes, all paid for, on the condition that you give up every single item of clothing you own in exchange. Would you do it?

My mum regularly used to say "oh I'd like to throw away everything and start again!" but I don't think I could. I have some things I really really like that I don't think I'd be able to buy now. Nothing terribly valuable, no designer gear, but some things I'd be sad to lose.

PS just pretend there's no issue with chucking clothes out, this isn't a "green" discussion

I wouldn't. There are things in my current wardrobe that I don't know what I'd do without

SoManyTshirts · 06/02/2022 17:36

I’m happy with what I’ve got, so no - it would be change for the sake of novelty rather than things I really like,

BaconOmelette · 06/02/2022 17:37

I would. I’m not particularly attached to any of my clothes. They were all cheap, aren’t necessarily the best fit and not in excellent condition.

ChickenStripper · 06/02/2022 17:37

Oh God yes ! 😁

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 06/02/2022 17:38

I would, 100%.

MaizeAmaze · 06/02/2022 17:39

Will someone else help me buy stuff that actually fits and suits me? If yes, show me where to sign up.
If I have to go shopping and do it all myself, I'll keep the bits I've got, thank you.

AwkwardSquad · 06/02/2022 17:40

Depends on the choice and the budget. Totally free choice and very healthy budget - yes 😁

Floisme · 06/02/2022 17:49

Absolutely no way. I have too many things I'd never be able to buy now.

DelphiniumBlue · 06/02/2022 22:32

If I had a way of working out at the point of purchase which items would become favourites and which would moulder at the back of the wardrobe, then maybe I would.
For example, I bought some really lovely suede Birkenstock chelsea boots. They are very comfortable, and I like the look of them. I spent a long time choosing the colour, and they were not cheap.
However it turns out they only work with blue jeans, and I have other boots that look nicer with black jeans and dresses. I hardly ever wear blue jeans, although in theory I would like to, because I can't find any that are perfect - even the fab ones I have in black just are not so nice in blue. So until I solve the jeans problem, I won't wear the boots much. I have about 10 pairs of jeans lying unworn in my cupboard because I have put on weight, and even before they still weren't exactly right. At the time I bought them I thought they were, but they turn out to be uncomfortable, or sag in the wrong place etc.
I've got a couple of dresses and a few cashmere jumpers I really love, but tbh most things in my wardrobe annoy me in one way or another, even though they didn't when I bought them.

EmmaH2022 · 06/02/2022 22:35

Hell yeah!

LiveFromNewYork · 06/02/2022 22:36

No way. If be completely lost if I had the current offerings to choose from. Too much polyester, high rise and ginormous sizing.

I used to go out and prefer the new thing I was trying on to the outfit I had on, now I often think my own clothes look far better.

Alrightqueenie · 06/02/2022 22:48

I'd find it hard to give up my coats but I could chick everything else away.

Enzbear · 06/02/2022 22:52

No chance. I have lovely clothes and they all fit.

Phrenologistsfinger · 06/02/2022 22:53

No, I am very attached to my clothes. I would rather never have anything new again than give up what I have now.

EmmaH2022 · 06/02/2022 22:58

@Floisme

Absolutely no way. I have too many things I'd never be able to buy now.
What sort of things can't you get now?
JaceLancs · 06/02/2022 22:59

No as I couldn’t give up my coats

DramaAlpaca · 06/02/2022 23:00

No, I have too many things I wouldn't want to part with.

EmmaH2022 · 06/02/2022 23:12

@JaceLancs

No as I couldn’t give up my coats
I used to have some fab coats when I went to posh things but I changed that lifestyle. Interesting to reflect. I had such a hard time selling those coats but I don't miss them at all.
Lovinglife45 · 06/02/2022 23:19

I would in a flash!

The majority of my clothes are from low end shops such as H&M, Mango, Zara, River Island.

I dream of owning a wardrobe full of clothes from Reiss, All Saints, Sezane, Cos, Kurt Geiger, Russell & Bromley, Jigsaw, Whistles.

Greyhare · 06/02/2022 23:51

No not a chance, I have some good old friends hanging in the wardrobe.

WhatLiesAhead · 07/02/2022 07:23

Well I wasn't expecting so many of you NOT to want that! I wonder if it's an age thing? My guess is those of us saying no we wouldn't are perhaps a little older than those who would? Just a thought

OP posts:
IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/02/2022 07:28

No. I don’t especially like buying clothes, and I’m a very non-standard shape (v long back, short legs, v bulbous calf’s and size 9 feet!! A lot of thought abs research went into many of my clothes!

Floisme · 07/02/2022 08:00

What sort of things can't you get now?
I have quite a lot of vintage clothes, most of them are pre-1970 and some are early 20th century. I very much doubt I could replace some of them and I'm not interested in finding out.

My guess is those of us saying no we wouldn't are perhaps a little older than those who would?
Correct in my case.

My guess is that if half your clothes are over, let's say 20 years old (that's being generous, it could be 10), you'd struggle to replicate the quality without a very hefty budget. Quality is on a downward trajectory and I can't see that reversing.

Alrightqueenie · 07/02/2022 08:25

I'm in my 40's and I wouldn't do it because I have nowhere to store the extra clothes until needed. So I don't think it's an age related issue, more practical consideration for many of us.

I'd rather spend £600 on trips out, clubs and activities each season rather than clothes. I buy what's needed at the time and sell or donate the old clothes.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/02/2022 08:28

What sort of things can't you get now?

Smart casual work dresses that are not made of polyester or viscose, or floral are my current obsession.
