Talk to me about hairdryers

I've never had a hairdryer that's cost more than £25 quid and I think I might be missing a trick. I always think my hair is dull, brittle and not soft but whenever I have it blow dried at a hair dresser it's always gorgeously soft (I know some of this is down to the product they use but I still can't achieve that even using the exact same products).

There's no way I'm spending hundreds on a Dyson but willing to spend up to maybe 80 quid on a better hairdryer than I have at the moment. I'm just after silky hair which mine used to be but now it's just frizzy and feels horrible.

Does it make a huge difference what hairdryer you use? Any recommendations? Or is it more about technique? Is a Dyson hair dryer really worth it?

My hair is better when I use my usual hairdryer (nothing special, but it is ionic) than when I use my travel dryer or someone else's hair dryer.
I'd be interested in a better travel hairdryer.

Parlux hairdryers are excellent, I use them at work and would never use anything else.

fiorentina · 05/02/2022 21:18

I love my Dyson! Quick and my hair is in good condition.

Wagsandclaws · 05/02/2022 21:39

I got a second hand parlux on eBay and it's fantastic!

Marmm · 05/02/2022 21:41

I spend about £50 and can usually get a decent one in boots on offer with a AC motor I think it is? Always seems to last me longer and dry quicker but it might just be my imagination

Mol1628 · 05/02/2022 21:45

I’ve got a cheap-ish Babyliss frizz free one and it’s so much better than my old basic hair dryer. Something to do with ionic plates? I don’t understand it but it works great.

Thinkbiglittleone · 05/02/2022 21:53

I love my Dyson, i have quite thick hair. It drys it really quickly and I have less split ends.
I use the attachments from the Airwrap as well to help style as I dry and it's great,

I invested in a parlour a few years ago it’s still going strong. Previously I’d just have £25 ones and they’d pack in after a while.

Yes parlux, prefer it to Dyson
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/02/2022 00:27

I have a Parlux which is what my hairdresser uses.

TooManyPJs · 06/02/2022 01:16

We bought this hairdryer for our DM/DMIL fir Christmas.....

I looked at quite a few. It has ionic conditioning, a brushless motor (at my DHs insistence - he reckons this equals longevity) and a long guarantee. It's also quite light for all that.

We got it for £60 on Black Friday but it's on quite a good deal now.

MIL has fed back that she loves it. Thinks it's better than her old faithful.

mocktheweek1 · 06/02/2022 01:21

Not hairdryer related but my hairdresser recommended I start using sulphate free shampoo after I told her I usually just grab whatever's on offer and I feel it's really helped with the brittleness of my hair. I'm also managing to wash every second day instead of every day. I use a Mark hill hairdryer just because I always have but will look into parlux now

Sunshineandrainbow · 06/02/2022 01:27

Love my ETI hairdryer. Use it everyday and has been going strong for years.

Kshhuxnxk · 06/02/2022 07:58

I have a Dyson and my hair is like silk now whereas previously very very dry.

Lampshading · 06/02/2022 08:00

I've got the ghd air hairdryer, I was a bit sceptical of how much difference it would make (not a fan of any of the Dyson hair products so was worried it was more hype)- but it's bloody fantastic. I have thick hair that usually takes ages to dry and gets quite knotty. Takes about half the time with this hairdryer and leaves my hair feeling lovely. It was about £85ish, but well worth every penny.

userxx · 06/02/2022 08:04

I have the GHD hairdryer and love it, I have thick frizz prone hair and this dries it quickly. Think it was about £125.00 10 years ago.

Fittleswade · 06/02/2022 08:05

Parlux is good, but the Dyson I bought to replace it outclasses it completely on my curly hair.

Butterfly44 · 06/02/2022 08:43

I bought a Dyson (hairdryer not air wrap) second hand 3 years ago. One of the best purchases I ever bought. Seriously. You could do the same within budget.

leccybill · 06/02/2022 08:55

Me and DD have thick coarse hair and the Dyson has been worth every only! We use it on the dog too.

Fontaine33 · 06/02/2022 09:09

Parlux ionic one, about a £100. Really good. I live in a hard water area and use water from water softener on my hair. Also Hershesons Almost Everything Cream - is amazing on my thick, fuzz prone hair. Beats any other product I’ve ever used and makes my hair salon swishy

TeaChocKitKat · 06/02/2022 09:13

Another vote for Parlux. I've had mine for about 6 years. I wash and blow dry my hair every day and it's still going strong.

Agree.

DD has a Parlux and her very fine hair has a lot less static.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 06/02/2022 09:16

I have a cloud 9 hairdryer and it’s really great

Luckyelephant1 · 06/02/2022 09:51

Looks like it's between Parlux and Dyson so will take a look at both including secondhand for Dyson.

@Fontaine33 I too also live in an extremely hard water area which makes my hair feel horrendous. What do you mean by 'water from water softener', as in do you mean you got a water softener installed? We were looking at that but it is quite pricey especially since we may be moving soon anyway.

It's annoying because my hair is so dry and brittle yet as soon as I use a product on it (even just on the ends) it just looks greasy and weighed down. I definitely need to give it a bit more tlc.

Don't buy a Dyson if you're not a Brexiteer.
