Hairdressers and Hair Straighteners!

HoneyFlowers · 04/02/2022 10:36

I have slightly wavy hair which I like, but everytime I go to the hairdressers, out come the straighteners! I hate the whole dead straight look, looks so harsh and having fine hair it looks awful. Why do they insist on this?

It's up to you you know. Just say you don't want your hair straightened.

MonkeyPuddle · 04/02/2022 10:40

Why aren’t you tell them how you want it doing? I have wavy hair and my hairdresser either scrunch and fry it or use a diffuser.

AmbushedByCake1 · 04/02/2022 10:56

You need to tell your hairdresser how you want it styled. You are paying for it! ask for it just to be blow dried, no straighteners.

Mercurial123 · 04/02/2022 11:00

My hairdresser never uses straighteners. You need to improve your communication.

Lupinspotato · 04/02/2022 11:09

I know what you mean OP. I have wavy hair and they always straighten it “just to check the cut”. I just think very few hairdressers understand the hair type.

SallyWD · 04/02/2022 11:10

My hairdresser asks if I want it straightened and I say no. Tell them right at the beginning you don't want it straightened. They won't mind!

Labracadabra · 04/02/2022 11:14

Ha I agree! I have very curly hair and my hairdresser (who has curly hair herself but straightens it) said, "I would straighten your hair but you'll hate me for it as you'll then want it like that all the time"
Er..no. I'm not you and I like my hair curly so BACK OFF!!
I changed hairdressers after that

hennybeans · 04/02/2022 11:27

It's just lazy and/or time saving. Much quicker than a proper blow dry. I think it's a dated look now as well. Just say no straighteners, please.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/02/2022 11:35

Just say you don't want it straightened. My DD has wavy hair which she doesn't straighten and at the hairdressers she just asks to have it dried as naturally as possible.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 04/02/2022 11:37

It's worse when out come the thinning scissors. I had to explain that they give my hair thick roots and scraggly ends. The hairdresser didn't believe me.

Coffeepot72 · 04/02/2022 11:44

OMG yes, the thinning scissors!! Dreadful things. I don't mind having my hair straightened slightly, but not this "lets flatten it to within an inch of its life" thing. Not a good look.

Lightning020 · 04/02/2022 11:48

With curly hair they often need to straighten it to check they have cut it evenly. If I didnt let them I would then risk a bad haircut.

WildPoinsettia · 04/02/2022 11:55

With curly hair they should understand that cutting it as if it's straight isn't the right thing to do unless the customer wears their hair straight. So checking the cut is a bullshit reason from them.

OP you're the customer, you do the insisting. If they're resistant to listening to what you want, change hairdresser!

Datada · 04/02/2022 12:01

I think they straighten it, as they know how to do it. A wavy look has the element of risk. You can ask if you could sit under the diffuser or scrunch dry.

Happy36 · 05/02/2022 09:38

I've never been at my hairdresser as the same time as someone with curly hair; he tends to work alone so I only see him blowdry someone's hair while having colour done but he seems to dry everyone's hair (including mine) the same, just with his fingers and what seems to be a very good quality/powerful hairdryer. Basically it comes out as your natural texture but a shiny, smooth, swishy version. Really natural looking and feeling, not stiff. Then his assistant will do straighteners/waves/curling with heated tools as an additional service, if you want. I just get the blowdry and it's my absolute favourite look and feel for my hair (shoulder length, straight, fine, quite a lot of it).

dementedpixie · 05/02/2022 09:40

Mine asks if I want it straight or wavy. I choose wavy so she gets the tongs out

MrsTimRiggins · 05/02/2022 09:40

Do they insist, really? You can just ask them not to straighten it, you don’t need to have straight hair if you don’t want.

suckingonchillidogs · 05/02/2022 12:39

I think to be fair a lot of them do it to check the cut as a PP said. One place I went to straightened it so much that my ears stuck out between the hair, I hate that!

dudsville · 05/02/2022 13:03

I had the same problem with product. Hairdressers would rarely ask me what products I'd like them to use and they would sneak up with something on their hands rubbing it through my hair. The only thing I can abide is a hair oil, and I also want my wavy hair natural. The problem with "improve your communication" is that the responsibility goes both ways and is is a reasonable annoyance to have to bear full responsibility.

Cheeky bint! 😮

Her not you, obvs ☺️

Nearlyadoctor · 05/02/2022 15:12

It’s pure laziness as most can’t blow dry well these days. Also re the comment ‘ I just need to check the cut’ I’m not sure they should be a hairdresser if they can’t check a cut without straightening your hair.

SirChenjins · 05/02/2022 15:16

My (new and amazing) hairdresser says you can hide a multitude of sins by using them to straighten or curl your hair. She blow dries my hair and then checks over the cut - for the first time in years I’ve got a fab cut.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 05/02/2022 15:17

They want you to pay for a bouncy blow out, that's why. Even if your hair is naturally lovely and wavy and bouncy, they dont want to dry it that way. Takes longer. They want you to pay extra.

You need a hairdresses who understands hair with curl to it.

HoneyFlowers · 05/02/2022 18:04

They tell me they're doing it to check the cut! And then it ends up so fine it looks dreadful.
I have changed hairdresser, she also refused to shave off the annoying baby hairs at bottom of head, said to just leave it.

They always want to dry my hair straight abc then put the waves back in with the straighteners. 🤷🏻‍♀️
