Hairdressers and Hair Straighteners!

I have slightly wavy hair which I like, but everytime I go to the hairdressers, out come the straighteners! I hate the whole dead straight look, looks so harsh and having fine hair it looks awful. Why do they insist on this?

I do find most hairdressers don't know how to do anything with wavy or curly hair.
Similar to a pp, if I ask for it to be dried wavy they blow dry it straight and then add waves back in.
Often I just let them do it straight and have it like that until I wash it again. Mine is thick though, so although its not my favourite look it looks OK.

I quite often tell mine not to use the straighteners. Apart from anything else, I’ve been there for three hours by then and I’m bored and want to leave. One time before I stopped her she said “you do have it straightened, don’t you? I’ve got some clients who don’t, bloody weirdos, why would you not have it straightened?” 😂

@Nearlyadoctor

It’s pure laziness as most can’t blow dry well these days. Also re the comment ‘ I just need to check the cut’ I’m not sure they should be a hairdresser if they can’t check a cut without straightening your hair.
Agree with this.

I've actually been to a hairdressers where I had to teach the apprentice how to blow dry hair. The manager then bollocked the poor girl in front of me and I never went back to that salon ever again.

They also cut my fringe when it is dry and straight.

I have an appointment with a new hairdresser so will let you know, I will say no straight look.

I have finally decided to return to the cheap unisex barbers locally. I got a lovely dry cut this morning
No faff no appointment. Waited just ten mins. £7.99 and no stress!

Had an appointment with a new hairdresser this week and I directly said I would like the cut to compliment my waves and straighteners make it go flat and thin and horrible. She was fine and worked with it!

Good that she listened.
I also have wavy / curly fine hair so my hairdresser always dries my hair in long curls.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 13/02/2022 19:33

I have straight hair and my hairdresser always asks if I want my hair blow dried straight or swishy.

delilahbucket · 13/02/2022 19:58

You need a new hairdresser. Mine always asks how I want mine finishing as sometimes I have it straight and sometimes curly. My hair is always cut beautifully straight regardless, to such an extent I've had people comment on how good a cut it is.

Okay guys, bad regret now asking her not to use straighteners. I have checked hair through and I have random longer lumps on one side at the back and one part of the side. Now I know why they use straighteners to "check the cut". Not very impressed for a £70 appointment!

I think the mark of a really good hairdresser is that they don't need to use straighteners. They are basically a cop-out for people who can't blow-dry properly. I have a mop of frizz and want the poker straight look - my hairdresser does it perfectly every time with just a hairdryer. Agree that needing them to "check the cut" isn't very impressive.

EvelynBeatrice · 16/02/2022 10:09

Most hairdressers aren't taught to cut curly hair. Specialists are hard to find. Since many types of curly hair are better cut dry there is no need to straighten to ' check the cut'.
You do need to be assertive and find someone who 1) knows what they're doing and 2) is prepared to listen to what you want and accept that you know your own hair and preferences without getting humphy!
It's also better to avoid the large chain type salons whose business model and management require people to be in and out very quickly- not useful if you have non- mainstream hair.

I used to have the same stylist always and she did a great blowdry if I wanted it (I sometimes just have a wet cut). I have lots of wavy hair. But after the lockdowns it was hard to get an appointment with her and I've got out if the habit of rebooking when I leave and ended up with more junior stylists who blowdry it straight then wave it with straighteners, it looks weird and the waves fall out within half an hour. I've decided enough's enough and have just booked the senior stylist again, but have to wait 6 weeks. I will rebook as I leave this time.

Finding decent hairdresser that knows what to do with curly /wavy hair is hard! I’ve had the same hairdresser for 10 years!! And had the same one before that for 8!! I’ve had some shockingly bad haircuts over 25 years :(

My current hairdresser is on maternity leave she recommended someone in the salon to take her place…colour brilliant but the haircut is not good! I’m not quite sure what’s she’s done!

My hairdresser always asks what I want and she usually dries it loose - I can never achieve what she does - I just look like I’ve been dragged through hedge backwards so natural drying at home!

doadeer · 16/02/2022 11:46

I just ask for it wavy. They never straighten it without asking. It's your choice how they blow dry and style it.
