To not know what people wear this days??

I’ve never been into fashion but did at least try when I was younger.

I now havnt been out for around 5 years other than walking and work.

I’ve been invited out to two events in feb and I’m going to crufts in March. What do people wear??

Event 1 - birthday lunch, day time
Event 2 - valentines meal with DH
Event 3 - massive dog show

I’m 5ft 10 so don’t like heels. Please dress me!?

How old are you OP? Any particular body shape? Size?

Event one - I'd wear to a nice venue, a silk blouse, leather trousers and a nice coat or bag, for a regular venue a nice top and jeans with a classic coat.

Event two - depending on the venue a wrap dress and boots

Event three - either paper bag tie trousers and a tucked in top or perhaps smart jeans and a cute jumper with flats

But I'm 28 and tall so what suits me might be different 😊

SnotRags · 01/02/2022 16:16

I’m 40, size 14 ☺️

  1. Blouse of some sort (h&m do nice ones with a print, well fitted), either dark blue jeans or black trousers (I like the ones that graze the ankle), flat shoes with a bit of detail and a nice handbag and make up (if you wear it)
  1. How formal is the venue for the Valentines meal? Would a dress with opaque tights and boots work?
  1. Never done Crufts so no idea if it's smart like Horse Racing events or more comfy/casual but I'd go safe and just rehash the birthday lunch outfit.

I'm useless with going out but I have been to crafts before. Assuming you are not showing or with showing people then literally anything is fine. Jeans and a hoody. Honestly- anything.

paintfairy · 01/02/2022 16:27

*crufts

allthingsnaice · 01/02/2022 16:27

Ah perfect! The current fashions are quite wild tbh, I tend to avoid anything too trendy because half of it is either crop tops or tiny 😂

I am absolutely living in slightly oversized blouses and silk tops, then with slim fit jeans or leather style trousers either tucked in (normally pre meal) or loose, with a classic cut coat (blazer style) and a handbag for evenings out. Well cut tops and trousers just look smart, and it is easy to put together and wear.

For crufts (so exciting!) definitely slightly casual but smart trousers and a jumper would look good, easy to wear all day and comfortable. I love paper bag, tie in at the waist and comfortable round the middle.

VickyEadieofThigh · 01/02/2022 16:28

Nobody cares what you wear to Crufts. Just saying.

EssexLioness · 01/02/2022 16:56

I would wear jeans and jumper and comfy shoes for crufts. For the lunch, I have a similar event coming up (dad’s 70th) and posted for advice on here. Was advised wrap dress and boots, which is what I am going for: it is at a nice hotel but nowhere super fancy. For something more low key I would prob opt for smart jeans and nice blouse/ top. I never wear heels and tend to live in a couple of pairs of boots this time of year. In summer I wear more sandals

Any chance you could link me to a similar dress as the one you’re wearing? I don’t even know what a wrap dress is, that’s how bad I am! I spend my whole life with dogs

Could you post this in Style and Beauty? You might get more info.

How about this for a wrap dress? For the valentines meal

Agree you should post this in Style and Beauty. You'll get some unnecessarily rude remarks on here. See Vicky upthread for reference🙄

Chely · 01/02/2022 17:27

Whatever you feel comfortable in.

I've been in nice restaurants and there will be people in suits and fancy dresses at one table and people in trackies at another 🤣. Unless the 0lace has a dress code nobody seems to care much these days.

Dog show, something warm and able to take a dog jumping up on you just in case.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/02/2022 17:55

I would say that if you don't have dog hair and a few pawprints on your trousers after a visit to Crufts, you've done Crufts wrong.

ISmellBurnings · 01/02/2022 18:08

I tend to wear a dress, tights and my DM boots for most occasions. I’ve got non DM boots which are smarter. Never wear heels anymore. I like smock type dresses or midi dresses, they work well with trainers too.

I think for Crufts you can wear what you like. I’d go in jeans.

EssexLioness · 01/02/2022 19:05

I really like that dress you linked to OP. This is the one I have - bought from Stitchfix last year. It’s jersey so really comfy and I will be wearing a camisole underneath

I wasn't intending to be rude, so apologies. My point was that Crufts is a very casual event and it doesn't really matter what you wear.
Bunce1 · 02/02/2022 09:39

Do you want to spend out on new shoes? If not what do you have already as footwear massively affects your “look”.

Lavender24 · 02/02/2022 09:43

For events one and two I'd go smart-casual - a nice dress or bodysuit and a skirt with tights and flats. When I attended Crufts years ago I wore a dress and flats to go in the ring and changed into jeans just for walking around.

Silversprinkles · 02/02/2022 09:46

Don't worry OP nobody wears heels any more in the trendy world, it's all flats, trainers and boots. Thank goodness! Grin

You've had some good advice already and I like that dress you linked.

Bunce1 · 02/02/2022 09:58

Crufts- don’t give it a thought! Jeans and a jumper, shoes you’re comfy in.

Wrap dress sounds nice but dependant on shoes

I went out for dinner and wore a silky bias cut midi skirt, a v neck linen t shirt, blazer and white trainers. I’m 46

LittleGwyneth · 02/02/2022 10:30

You're in a really tricky age bracket because clothes tend to be marketed towards people who are under 35 or over 50 (thanks for that, sexism).

But the generic answer to your question is: during the spring / summer a printed dress, white trainers and and a denim jacket, or a jumpsuit with trainers. If you want to buy something nice but aren't overly worried about personal style or being different then Hush and M&S are your best friends.

In terms of evening things, I would avoid trousers and a 'nice top' as it's dated and ageing. I'd have a look for a dinner party dress you can wear for any social stuff, including going out for dinner. Personally I like a full length shirred dress with ankle boots and a leather jacket, but a wrap dress and boots could also work.

Otherwise it's a bit boring but a great pair of jeans, some trainers you really like (ideally machine washable), a couple of good jumpers from Whistles and a decent winter, the linen mix t-shirts from M&S will mean that you've got a classic, tasteful weekend wardrobe which works for most stuff.
