Why is all the swimwear absurdly high-cut and/or up the arse right now?!?

Op.cit.: this offering from Wolf & Badger. I'll just tell you that the rear view was referred to as "minimal coverage" and leave it at that.

But literally every piece of swimwear seems to be cut ridiculously high on the leg right now. What grown-up wears this shit that you need an immediate wax for? Is this like when I was 19 and wore all thongs because I had the vague sense that they were "sexy" and therefore grown-up, even though I hated the permawedgie and no one else saw them? Is it just my algorithms? I do sometimes click on them out of sheer morbid curiosity to confirm that, yes, that entire scrap of fabric is wedged up the model's bumcrack. WHY???

If you've found this page in search of swimwear that has been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best swimsuits for women useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

And I'd prefer the black top if it didn't have annoying little cut outs that would leave odd tan lines.

Ah well, the search continues.

Zazdar · 04/02/2022 08:19

Am l looking at the same link?

Looking at it the second time I was struck by the fact that most of them almost seem to have more fabric on the front than the back. Most are cut with quite high legs and wouldn’t cover both bum cheeks completely. That’s obviously what some people obviously prefer.

I’m not shy but don’t like the high leg trend. I keep an eye open all year round for the specific style in the brands I like and snap them up if I see them at the right price. End of season online sales are usually good pickings.

@iloverock I tried on a shorts one piece in Decathlon but due to my build it made me look like an American wrestler!

I then got the giggles in the changing room and couldn't get out if it as I got too hot!

I finally managed it and launched myself out of the cubicle looking rather pink and bedraggled to find a small queue had formed. I tried to style it out and wandered off to look at badminton rackets as I if I hadn't just nearly wet myself.

Your missing the trick: you’re supposed to take of your whole vulva and store it in your handbag.
It’s the only way you can possibly wear one of these swimsuits without being arrested for public indecency Smile

TheOrigRights · 04/02/2022 08:30

There are LOADS of swimsuits which give decent coverage and look nice.

I swim a lot so am happy to spend a bit more on a Landsend one.

Fashion outlets are just that - fashion.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 04/02/2022 08:33

Go to Sports Direct OP. Nice variety of styles and even the boy leg ones if that's your thing.

This reminds me of my favourite German word: arschfrissthose

Translation: arse eats pants Grin

StickerPlace · 04/02/2022 08:54

Oh dear.

I'm 37 and I'm so happy this is the current trend.

I'm short and curvy with loose skin from pregnancy on my stomach so I am so grateful for bikinis with a higher waist.

My bum didn't suffer like my stomach did with pregnancy so I will happily show off more bum for a higher waistband.

Also the high cut is very flattering on hips and waist. I'm happy to keep on top of the pube situation anyway, although tempted to go to a salon before our beach holiday at Easter rather than stick to shaving myself.

But nervous to as not had my fange out for waxing since I had DC1 and I have stretch marks down into my pubes! And of course it's a mess down there compared to pre-childbirth!

It's true! Grin

So it seems to be that in order to buy a swimming costume you either have to look around for quite a while to find full arse/tit/stomach coverage that's fashionable and, it seems, pay higher prices for the privilege, or keep your fanjo waxed or shaved and go for the easy option of choosing one from the thousands on offer on the fashion websites - all so that you can display your bum cheeks to others.

Meanwhile men go to the swimming costume section and choose a pair of trunks at a very reasonable price that doesn't require them to remove any hair or display their arse.

Mad.

You can do that too. If you want to.

SirChenjins · 04/02/2022 10:44

I’d be removed from a public swimming pool if pitched up wearing nothing but a pair of men’s trunks.

That wasn’t my point though.

You're doing the classic MN of deliberately being obtuse.

Wear mens swim shorts and a bikini top. Done.

Buy a sports swimming costume. Done.

As mentioned on this thread more than once - M&S supermarkets etc.

Zazdar · 04/02/2022 10:50

The point is that there is a huge variety of swimwear available for women. Far wider than the limited selection men get to choose from.

If you don’t like what is in fashion, you can choose to wear something else.

gogohm · 04/02/2022 11:02

Mine are from bravissimo because they actually fit me from there

SirChenjins · 04/02/2022 11:16

No, I'm responding to a a silly point badly made.

There is not a 'huge variety' of fashion swimwear at low prices on fashion sites for women which does not show a lot of flesh, esp around the bum. High cut and verging on thong is the fashion. Men's swimwear avoids the need for pube waxing and arse cheek display - go onto any of the fashion sites and swimwear consists of items that can be worn to a public swimming pool.

Then ignore the fashion and wear what you feel comfortable in.

It really isn't that hard.

SirChenjins · 04/02/2022 11:32

You don't say.

Again though - not the point.

Maybe there has never been a demand for men to wear fashion swimwear?

I personally have never had a problem buying swimwear for the beach or the pool which I like, feel comfortable in, can swim in or muck about on the beach in.

There is a trend in very high cut, very cut out etc 'swim' wear but there is also plenty of 'normal' stuff. The women I see in the pool are just wearing swim suits.

SirChenjins · 04/02/2022 12:36

There are fashion trends within men's swimwear - over the years the speedo type thing has appeared (thankfully not widespread and it's pretty much fallen out of favour here), we've had the shorty shorts, the tight shorts, the knee length surfer type thing, the mid length, the highly patterned and so on. DC3 is currently sporting mid thigh baggy swimming shorts which is what his teen friends are wearing, but DC1 and his friends wore the patterned knee length ones 10 years ago at the same age. None of them required the boys to wax or shave, or have their butt cheeks out (or even partially on display).
My point is that women's fashion (I'm specifically talking about fashion) nowadays seems to require this in a way it didn't even just a few years ago - and doesn't of men.

CaveMum · 04/02/2022 12:59

Urgh, tell me about it. I got the latest Boden catalogue in the post the other day and there are some lovely patterns in their swimwear but everything is so bloody high cut! I'm not a swimmer but we're going on holiday this year, my first bloody overseas holiday in 9 years, and I want to be able to wear something that is flattering and vaguely fashionable - is that too much to ask?! I don't want to have to wear something that requires me to be waxed within an inch of my life!

Try LandsEnd.

Fashions change. There’s a fashion for men to walk around with their arses hanging out of the back of their trousers showing off their underwear. Women’s fashion doesn’t require that. It works both ways.

In the case of swimwear, I would have thought that the obvious anatomical differences would preclude men from wearing high cut speedos.

TheOrigRights · 04/02/2022 14:11

Of course none of us are required to wax or shave, that's what we choose to do, or feel we should.

Because this doesn't apply to most men, you can't really compare how fashions effect men and women differently.

SirChenjins · 04/02/2022 14:22

That's a fashion (haven't seen it in years though) - that isn't the way the trousers are designed or cut.

As for the anatomical differences - male thongs and jockstraps do exist and could quite easily transfer to swimwear as it has for women. Funnily enough, yet again, it hasn't (and won't I suspect)

Why do you think that is?
