Why is all the swimwear absurdly high-cut and/or up the arse right now?!?

Op.cit.: this offering from Wolf & Badger. I'll just tell you that the rear view was referred to as "minimal coverage" and leave it at that.

But literally every piece of swimwear seems to be cut ridiculously high on the leg right now. What grown-up wears this shit that you need an immediate wax for? Is this like when I was 19 and wore all thongs because I had the vague sense that they were "sexy" and therefore grown-up, even though I hated the permawedgie and no one else saw them? Is it just my algorithms? I do sometimes click on them out of sheer morbid curiosity to confirm that, yes, that entire scrap of fabric is wedged up the model's bumcrack. WHY???

If you've found this page in search of swimwear that has been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best swimsuits for women useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

See, this is not a completely terrible pair of high waisted bottoms and they at least cover the crack in the rear. I'd be prepared to try these on for size and see if they flatter.

I like the bikini bottoms above. Not enough of the top on view to comment. I prefer a briefer cut on the bum though (but not dental floss!) because, as opposed to avoiding wedges, too much fabric around the bum causes me wedges that needs constant adjusting.

It just demonstrates how we are all different shapes. Part of the problem though is a lot of the sizing and different cuts are all over the place.

SirChenjins · 02/02/2022 08:08

Your arse cheeks would still be on show to the world around you with that green one above. Yet again, women's bodies on display (minus the hair) in a way that men never feel the need to.

BrownTableMat · 02/02/2022 08:56

I’m another one who’s bought some cheap swim shorts from Amazon and pair them with an underwired tankini, of which I have several. Keeps my H cup boobs in place, no cleavage on show, covers my apple tummy about which I’m a bit self conscious, and no worries about my abundant muff displaying itself. What’s not to like?

BlowDryRat · 02/02/2022 09:03

Mountain Warehouse has some good swimwear (along with some high-legged, bum-baring stuff).

Great for proper swimming.

These look great from the front, not so keen on the high back, but I'm going to toddle along to my nearest Decathlon and try them and their bush-covering ways. I'm going to have to compromise no matter what, and not having to constantly shave or pull fabric out of my arse trumps an open back.
snowstorm2012 · 02/02/2022 13:19

They all seem to be the rage now.

I hate the multiple string costumes/bikinis, I would just look like a trussed up bit of pork if I wore any of those Grin

Zazdar · 02/02/2022 13:20

I can't see what all the fuss is about. Wearing whatever is currently in fashion isn't compulsory. Wear what you feel comfortable in.

SkankingMopoke · 02/02/2022 17:49

Zazdar the issue that is shops tend to stock whatever the latest fashion is, making finding the styles I feel comfortable in incredibly difficult. We just want options (and an understanding that not all women are the same shape).

Zazdar · 02/02/2022 19:08

I must admit that I haven’t looked for swimwear in any physical shops recently but a quick Google brings up no end of places selling “unfashionable” swimwear to suit (I would assume) every taste.

I certainly haven’t had any problems getting what I like. Which is not, incidentally, the type with loads of strings or like the picture in the OP.

Jennifer11 · 02/02/2022 21:55

These are really comfy to swim in and more flattering than they may look!

dipdye · 03/02/2022 02:38

Do high cuts make your legs look longer? Or do you have to have long legs anyway?

Or will my parsnip legs just look stumpier?

Confused
ouch321 · 03/02/2022 04:02

I'd noticed the weird cuts over the past couple of years and it does look so very wrong as it were.

GreekGod · 03/02/2022 04:05

Fully agree OP - go for it, please design swimwear for us. We need someone like you.

Some nice ones here…

They even do long sleeved bikinis.

@SirChenjins

I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds the whole ‘bum cheeks on display in a public swimming pool’ look so depressing - because funnily enough, men manage to be ‘liberated’ and ‘empowered’ without showing their arses in similar ways. It’s just one part of the continued objectification of women that makes me wonder how we’ve managed to go backwards rather than forwards in the last 30 years.
Absolutely - was in a hotel pool the other day and it was full of kids having a nice time and middle aged people swimming, and then a young woman came out in one of these thing back swimsuits with bum completely out and cutouts around the front and it was completely inappropriate. Her boyfriend was draped all over her but he was in comfy shorts without his arse in full view of everyone.

I mean fair enough on a beach in Brazil, but no thanks in a chain hotel pool in January in Britain. My 9 y o was horrified and all I could think of was the bacteria 🤣 The 80s versions at least pretended to have done back coverage, but these are just thong backs.

I too hated the thong trend - so uncomfortable, I could never not think of the bum bacteria. Thrush pants!

DillonPanthersTexas · 03/02/2022 08:25

Blame Love Island for promoting the 'hungry arse' look

Have a look at the backs of those - almost every one cut high up the arse to show substantial amount of bum cheek. Why??
Fridafever · 03/02/2022 22:24

I wear swim shorts over a one piece. Cannot be doing with all that shaving.

Zazdar · 03/02/2022 22:43

Hmm... I see what you mean. There are one or two with more bum coverage, but not many.

How about Boden...

StarlightLady · 04/02/2022 04:21

Am l looking at the same link? Most on the Cupshe website have what l would describe as, at the very least, average bum coverage, some more so. There are certainly very few that l would call minimal.

Are some people talking about wegies and cutting in etc wearing the wrong size! There’s a great choice of styles here, including retro, providing you are size 10. More restrictive for the rest of us.

I’ve recently bought a Zoggs and a Guess costume (sister bought me the latter for Xmas) both true to size.

As for the comparison with men’s swimwear, whatever floats your boat (or your body!), l’m so pleased l don’t have to go to the pool or beach looking like that.

LemonViolet · 04/02/2022 05:26

I am not slim Grin I wear mens swim shorts, and a Freya bikini top in my bra size. Works for me, comfy, functional, and I think I look good tbf.

themental · 04/02/2022 05:31

I bought a swimming costume online the other day because it was specifically marketed as LOW LEG. In my head I thought it'd be like what you saw Marylin Monroe wearing back in the day.

It arrived yesterday and I tried it on to find the leg was actually where every normal leg has always been cut before this madness became a thing 😬.

Maybe I was just pulling it up too much, but I'm 5'2 and it was only just covering the girls enough to be decent in a public swimming pool.

This is the culprit to warn anyone else who might fall for it 😂

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/02/2022 07:54

Oooh! I've just found some proper bikini shorts - the Goodmove range at M&S!

Look: www.marksandspencer.com/bikini-bottom-shorts/p/clp60517159?color=BLUE#intid=prodColourId-60517160

They come in black or blue with two styles of top.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/02/2022 07:56

Ah no, I'm wrong about the tops, bizarrely you can have the bottoms in either colour but the tops only in one per style. Hmm
