Is marks and spencer good quality?

Hi everyone
I am thinking about buying some jumpers from marks and spencer. Does anyone know if the clothes from m and s are generally good quality?

I would also like to know as I need some decent basics!

bonfireheart · 31/01/2022 19:29

Hit and miss. I've got some lovely dresses and a pencil skirt for work about 3 years ago and still great quality. Bought DD12 some leggings and they were really poor quality.

chillydownwiththefiregang · 31/01/2022 19:34

It used to be, but the last few items I have purchased have been dreadful. I recently started a thread about this as I'm so cheesed off with M&S.

windmill26 · 31/01/2022 20:03

I have M&S cashmere sweaters, trousers and gym-wear. I am happy with all of it.

DSGR · 31/01/2022 20:41

Hit and miss but their cashmere is excellent and lasts years

LookdeepintotheParka · 31/01/2022 20:50

Yep hit and miss definitely. I think they've tried to keep costs down at the expense of quality over the last few years. The shop floor practically crackles with all the polyester but there are some good quality basics in there ...you just have to search them out and read the reviews before buying (especially online!)

covetingthepreciousthings · 31/01/2022 20:52

Agree with others, can be hit and miss. Overall I find the quality better than other high street retailers though, especially jumpers and jeans, I've always found basics to wash well too.

ChickenStripper · 31/01/2022 20:56

@IcyWinterWonderland have you never bought anything from M and S in your life before? Curious..

FigitBit · 31/01/2022 21:01

Mixed

The last jeans I bought have been excellent.

The last underwear dreadful Sad

Vicliz24 · 31/01/2022 21:03

These days very few high street stores are good quality. All synthetic fabrics everywhere. I truly believe that most of the affordable ones are all on the same level as Primark. With the exception of Zara that actually can be worst of all . Charity shops provide much better value and quality these days .

IcyWinterWonderland · 31/01/2022 21:15

@ChickenStripper Nope

Can be but often it's rubbish quality. I got a nice coat.

Iamthewombat · 31/01/2022 22:12

The Autograph stuff is. In that range, they will always have wool, cotton, silk and leather. M&S have a higher proportion of leather and suede shoes than other high street stores. I defy you to find leather shoes in New Look or Zara.

DramaAlpaca · 31/01/2022 22:16

M&S stuff in natural fibres tends to be good. Anything synthetic, not so much.

I disagree with the leather shoes comment. Zara has always a lot of leather shoes on offer and they are way better quality than M&S .I use to work in fashion so I know a bit. New Look is generally crap (everything ,not just shoes).
MaChienEstUnDick · 31/01/2022 22:31

It's massively hit and miss. What I would say is that I have more hits for things I buy in person, than things I buy online. You need to give it a crunch and - as pp said - see what gives you the polyester crackle.

Internaljukebox · 01/02/2022 05:42

I've just recently gone back to M&S after it was recommended by someone on a thread on here. Was so impressed !
I got a dress, shirt ,2 jumpers ,2 t shirts and a bralette. Quality and fit were so good and I'm a very curvy size 12 with big boobs and massive thighs so I find it difficult to get clothes to fit well but the sizing here was perfect .

ChickenStripper · 01/02/2022 11:17

That is amazing. Is there a reason for this?

IcyWinterWonderland · 01/02/2022 11:34

@ChickenStripper Because in the country where I live, there are not that many marks and spencers stores. I am still quite young so in the past I did not buy clothes from m and s when I rarely visited a store, only food and drink

IcyWinterWonderland · 01/02/2022 11:35

@ChickenStripper I should have said in my reply 'nope only food and drink but never clothes'

I have bought some items from M&S in past year or so. They're ok but certainly not on a par with items I bought years ago there.

Underwear apparently isn't the same and the tights I bought could be better too.

Shoes and boots not bad.

I knew they'd gone downhill when I picked up a dress about a year ago (it sold out and bloggers raved about it) in Primark and the checkout girl said there was an almost similar one double the price in M&S. Quality was same if not better in Primark.

@Internaljukebox - I did buy a cami vest and shorts set recently (Autograph) which were very nice.

If I ever do go to the shop near me (huge one) it hardly has stock and sizing of what I want there. And no, I can't be arsed to wait for it. Ms Impatient

Ah well - that is VERY relevant to the post and explains it.
