Head Massage at Hairdressers

Anyone else think it's naff when you get a super short head massage at the basin? How do you communicate that it wasn't great at the time?

'Was that the head massage??? Oh, I thought that was just the wash? Are you starting the massage part now then??? Grin

I don't know the exact answer TBH. I do find its a cursory pressure and push on the head for seconds and that is it at most places!!! I don't have a regular hair dresser though as recently moved and avoid most unless I really need a trim.

HoneyFlowers · 24/01/2022 23:43

I'm thinking of saying at the time when they always ask "is the pressure okay" that "oh this is my favourite part, nothing worse than a bad head massage" 😂

I hate it and I always feel stressed that it won't last long enough. Some hairdressers just comb conditioner through which gets on my pip. I like the head massage it's part of the experience!

WheelieBinPrincess · 24/01/2022 23:46

Agh! I sort of just lay there in hope. The worst is when they keep chatting to you while they do it. That’s the relaxing part please be quiet 🤐

I changed hairdresser because my old one stopped doing any head massages or deep conditioning treatments ‘because of covid’ Hmm

PermanentTemporary · 24/01/2022 23:46

I love it but I'll take massage good or bad short or long any time. I feel starved of touch (yes I have a partner and he's quite tactile!)

LuckyWithMyLot · 24/01/2022 23:46

I've had some shockers before. Light pressure, scratching (?!), hair tangling.
Question though, does everyone else close their eyes? I do but always feel a little weird about it...

girljulian · 24/01/2022 23:48

I hate it when they do a head massage!!

WheelieBinPrincess · 24/01/2022 23:51

I also don’t know whether to close my eyes or not 😂

I remember once I paid for a very expensive haircut on holiday as a treat. They’d already dripped water down my back and then ran cold water and she actually asked me what the temperature was like so I said ‘it’s pretty cold actually’

She said ‘ok, good’ and nothing changed Confused

I was praying she didn’t do a head massage but luckily she was far too lazy.

Itonlytakesonetree · 25/01/2022 00:00

I always ask that they don't do it, it really hurts and I can't bear it. The shorter the whole experience the better but until I found the balls to ask them not to do it, it was unbearable.

HoneyFlowers · 25/01/2022 00:04

I did have a male hairdresser once who was the other extreme, he was still going full head massage about ten minutes later, that was overkill.

Yes, or an annoying pop song going off in the background!

I had an AMAZING head massage from my hairdresser this weekend, I could happily have sat their for an hour.

Cigfree · 25/01/2022 00:22

If you don’t want a head massage, just tell them - they won’t be offended. I hate having the massage and I now make a point of telling my hairdresser not to do it (I don’t have a regular hairdresser so I end up having this conversation frequently!).

But would they be offended if you asked for more???

Sorry if this is a bit of an obvious idea, but could you not just pay for a massage from someone who does it for a living? I've seen head, neck and shoulder massages listed I'm sure

CovidCurious · 27/01/2022 17:34

Yes, and I have done that but unless you are in a place where you can then wash your hair you have to go home with an oily head. Which is fine if you're driving but not so much if you have to walk through town.
JohnStonesMissus · 27/01/2022 17:39

I go to Toni & Guy and they always ask if I want it and I always say yes! It's the highlight for me, so relaxing, I could sit there for a hour too..

That's actually a great idea, I'll see if the local place does this!

I still think though for an expensive haircut in a salon that the head massage should be more than a few seconds.

Londonlassy · 27/01/2022 18:27

I won’t return to a salon that does crappy head massages. It’s my favourite part of greying my hair cut

itwasntaparty · 27/01/2022 18:48

I just close my eyes and ignore all chat. Have to say mine is pretty good.

HoneyFlowers · 27/01/2022 18:59

Oh yes, please don't make small talk during the moment!

OP posts:
100problems · 27/01/2022 18:59

I say before I sit, please no head massage. They are invariably shit and if the washer has false nails painful.

mogkat · 27/01/2022 19:10

I hate it when you get a junior so the wash and they have super long nails and just scratch your head Hmm
