How do you judge when it's time to get some more Botox?

So I've had Botox 2 or 3 times for really deep frown lines. Once a year is really enough to soften them up, I don't want a completely unnatural line free face at 45. My motivation is more not looking cross all the time which affects my communication with people.

I'm just wondering how you decide you need to go back for more. I think in my mind I worry if you go too regularly a) it's obviously super expensive but b) if you haven't completely reset to your natural-without-Botox state, how does the practitioner judge what they are doing? Is it OK to have more Botox even when the last lot hasn't actually fully worn off? Would love to hear your views and strategies!

I have mine done every three months.

My Dr said that it works better the longer you use it and I have noticed that.

When we were in lockdown and I couldn't get anything done the first time I had it done after the six months the results weren't as good, then when I went back again the results looked better and so on.

I have particularly strong muscles on my forehead and between my eyes though so I still do have some movement ( which I like ) the 11's that came back during lockdown have all bit disappeared again.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/01/2022 12:54

I think if ever I thought it was time to get Botox, I'd book a counselling appointment instead.

PenStation · 23/01/2022 13:35

I’m inclined to agree in general @arethereanyleftatall but not looking cross all the time seems like a sound reason to consider Botox if it’s affecting communication with others.

Scbchl · 23/01/2022 13:38

I got mine for the first time yesterday, she said to me itl be 10 to 11 weeks at most the first time and not to wait till the movement is fully back. Then after that it will last longer. Il be honest I was a bit shocked I didn't realise it was needed every 3 months or so I thought it was more yearly like lip filler.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/01/2022 13:38

Ah, my apologies @PenStation, I missed that bit.

Good for you. Maybe a counsellor can work on your judgemental attitude.
Branleuse · 23/01/2022 14:03

If you think once a year is enough for you, then no need to get it more than that. I tend to wait until i think im looking a bit old and tired and then I think about it for another month or two and then might get a top up

Branleuse · 23/01/2022 14:04

one of the things I like about botox most apart from making me look fresher, is the fact that not being able to frown as much seems to actually help with me tensing my face and jaw as much, which actually helps my mood

Ah, my apologies *@PenStation*, I missed that bit.
Everyone has it for different reasons really I spent months in severe pain, had an operation and the pain went but my face still had the pain lines/frown. Botox and gone and I felt like me again

MintyGreenDream · 23/01/2022 14:53

Around 4 months

LiveFromNewYork · 23/01/2022 15:44

@Branleuse Yes me too re just generally not feeling as frowny/grumpy. It's interesting how it can have that psychological effect.

I have a very expressive no poker face. Botox helps me not to look so disgusted when people are talking nonsense in meetings which helps me present as more professional.

Generally I don't mind wrinkles, have plenty around my eyes, it's just looking angry all the time I hate, also makes me look tired when I am rarely ever actually tired.

When is it time? When hell freezes over…! Grin
Sorry, but I’m with arethereanyleftatall. One’s self esteem really shouldn’t depend on injecting toxins into one’s face, due to obsessing over such a superficial non issue as wrinkles.

Lol. Listen to them.

Because our self esteem depends on it. Yep. That's why people have it.

Is there a " tedious sanctimonious preaching" board this can be moved too?

raises eyebrows

Or at least I would, had one not been so vapidly up one's own arse, to inject toxins into one's face.

Oh aren’t you so high brow (or not maybe?) @Babdoc

LiveFromNewYork · 23/01/2022 16:15

I didn't really start this thread for a discussion on whether people should have Botox, I'm asking for experiences of people who have it semi-regularly. If you don't then this isn't the thread for you.

My dermatologist recommends that if I started botox to do it little but often. So only the bare minimum every 3-4 mths and only for areas which won’t respond to other forms of treatment. She is a much bigger fan of using retinoids combined with diet to prevent pronouced collagen loss.

What does she recommend diet wise please?
TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 23/01/2022 16:32

I hadn't realised that you need to keep doing it. A bit like getting your hair coloured I guess. Not sure I've got the patience for either!

fiorentina · 23/01/2022 16:46

My practitioner said every 3-4 months but depending upon your metabolism as to how quickly it wears off, from my research if for example you exercise a lot it will wear off faster. I’ve had it twice and both times it’s worn off nearly entirely before I had it re-done. Largely due to finding time to go.

Secretsout · 23/01/2022 16:49

I'm an injector and the minimum time between treatments is 12 weeks so I won't treat earlier than that.

I always advise patients to book in for a treatment as soon as they see movement starting to return and to not let movement get back to what it was pre-treatment.

As for starting with low doses....this is rubbish. The manufacturers have carried out extensive research and provide practitioners with dosages that should be used. Under dosing is poor practice and IMO a way for a practitioner to be getting away with administering the bare minimum to maximise their profits.

Make sure you mention how judgemental and rude you are, too, maybe they can work on that as well!

Thats up to you isnt it, but im not sure how one session of counselling is going to get rid of wrinkles
Everydaydayisaschoolday · 23/01/2022 17:38

I have quite hooded eyes and Botox lifts my eyebrows into an arch and opens up my eyes so I look alert and refreshed. I know it's time to have to redone when my eyebrows start to go straight and I start looking sleepy. About every 4 months or so.
