Jeans wear through very quickly

As I spend £40 on another pair of jeans maybe 2-3 months after my last, I've been thinking if it's just me that goes through jeans really quickly where they get thin and eventually wear through at the top of the thighs?

These are typically M&S standard of jeans which i wouldn't have thought were the lowest quality. I debate whether to buy more expensive ones but then am I destined to always wear through jeans because of my, erm, generous thighs?

Anyone else / any tips other than a diet ?

I've had this happen too with recent pairs I bought from both M&S and Next! Also ripping down the seams of the back pockets.

I've always bought jeans from both shops and they've lasted years with almost daily wear. Now I'm getting 6-12 months before they go thin and rip. I think it's just a drop in quality.

Hungry625f · 19/01/2022 07:45

I've found exactly the same issue. I think it's the amount of stretch in them tbh. Cheap jeans, lots if stretch, don't last long.

I've started to be a bit more fussy, and buy higher denim content jeans and they are lasting much longer. Boden have been the best but H&M and the occasional New Look pair have been very good.

It's all about the quality!

Clarabellawilliamson · 19/01/2022 07:47

I'm the same. I haven't found a correlation between price and length of wear at the lower end, so am reluctant to spend lots to see if it's any different!
Perhaps an expensive thick selvedge denim would last longer, but would be a very different look/ fit.

Frazzled2207 · 19/01/2022 07:49

I’m currently wearing a pair of M&S jeans about 3 years old still going strong. They really are fine.

I can believe that the quality has deteriorated more recently.

One thought though- do you put yours in the drier? I don’t and think not putting in the drier extends their lifetime a lot. (I do put plenty of other stuff in the drier!)

Amelion · 19/01/2022 07:56

It might be worth looking at denim without the stretch - look for something 100% cotton instead. I’ve never worn through jeans and I wear jeans a lot - I get premium brands but often from places like the Outnet - maybe £100 or more for jeans but they last ages so probably make more financial sense than getting several high street pairs.

Shopgirl1 · 19/01/2022 07:58

I used to buy Next jeans and had this. I was a size 18 at the time with generous thighs. I’d be lucky to get 6 months out of them.
I’m a size 10 now with slim thighs, I get Topshop jeans in on asos. It doesn’t happen anymore. Not sure if it’s down to the brand or weight loss.

ILoveYouMoreTheEnd · 19/01/2022 08:05

I buy Levi which do last even the stretchy ones. My current duo are 4 years old and although they still look good the dark ones are looking a bit dated and not as smart. They are getting moved to the dog walking pile of clothes now. I have a pair of Next ones that I bought 2 years ago and worn once a month or so and they still look new. X

CamomileTeabag · 19/01/2022 08:15

Levi jeans last twice as long but cost (at least) twice as much.

My DC wear a lot of vintage clothes and the 80s and 90s jeans are astonishing in quality compared to what we've got used to today. The denim is much, much more robust.

Same with 90s T-shirts. They're almost halfway to being a sweatshirt in fabric thickness, compared to the fine knits of today which look like a misshapen old rag after a few washes.

Just as Christmas tins of Quality Street have imperceptibly shrunk in weight, so has fabric quality.

Sew3stitch · 19/01/2022 08:36

Really helpful, thank you. I am in my 30s now but remember similar issues when I was a teen. Given I've always bought high Street jeans it could be down to the stretch and (lack of) quality. Sadly i think my big thighs might be the main problem but will give Levi or similar a go and see if I can get a bit longer out of them. My husband has Levis years old but he does have skinny legs Grin

I've had this problem with And/Or jeans from John Lewis - combination of thin stretchy denim and 'powerful' thighs. I get the mender/clothes repairer in town to sew a thicker patch along the inside of the thigh to extend the wear - just seems wasteful to throw them out, when the rest is fine. (Although the knees do seem to look a bit threadbare so maybe not just my thighs' fault...)

onemouseplace · 19/01/2022 15:04

I've stopped buying White Company jeans (which I previously loved) as I had a couple of pairs that did exactly this after hardly being worn - I think they must have changed the denim (and I do think it had got thinner and stretchier) which was the issue.

I haven't tried them again for a while, which is a shame as they were the perfect cut for me, but were too expensive for how long they were lasting.

CrabPuff · 19/01/2022 16:34

I agree about the White Company jeans - great cut for my waist / hip ratio and ok price point but if you have to buy three pairs a year, you might as well go on to Brandalley for J Brand. I now assume most people who shop in there just have a thigh gap!

EmmaPaella · 19/01/2022 16:38

This happened to my Next and M&S stretch ones. I have just bought two pairs of non-stretch ones instead.

Dancingonmoonlight · 19/01/2022 23:01

Try wearing a size up. I found this happened when I put up weight. I was wearing a size too small and stretching them so much.
I lost a stone and it wasn’t a problem. Unfortunately over Xmas I gained again!

nanbread · 19/01/2022 23:47

This happened to me on a pair of fairly loose / wide 100% cotton jeans recently, I am a size 8-10 and don't have major thigh chafing.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 20/01/2022 00:07

I think having an inner thigh patch is s great idea. I might look into what can be done with wondaweb which is basically anything.

I have just bought 3 pairs of M&S jeans and keep hearing about them not lasting. I have the 99% cotton 1% elastane ones.

I bought some next ones off ebay and they certainly started to feel thin after just a few months but I am hoping these will last longer.

Does using liquid not powder help? As it reduces friction.

ThackeryBinks · 20/01/2022 00:10

So glad it's not just me!

Popstarrrrr · 20/01/2022 00:17

Happens to me too. Even when I was slimmer. Brand, price point and company do not seem to make a difference. I hate M&S jeans as they include polyester.

Like previous posters said, I think it's the stretch. The only pair of jeans that haven't rubbed away at the thigh area are 12 years old from Gap. These jeans are denimbl only and quite lightweight too. My more recent three year old Gap jeans are now relegated to home use only due to large holes.

stevalnamechanger · 20/01/2022 00:31

You can get them reinforced or do it yourself ( mine do it too!)

Rhannion · 20/01/2022 00:39

Yes, both DH & DS have holes in Levi jeans which were only bought 10 & 14 months ago.

Sew3stitch · 20/01/2022 08:21

I cam sew (basics anyway) so reinforcing is a good idea. Would you do that on the inside presumably so it can't be seen? But saying that, luckily when the inner thigh but has ripped when out and about before I don't think (hope!) it was too obvious!

purplesequins · 20/01/2022 08:24

this happens to me if I get the size wrong.
go a size bigger.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/01/2022 08:25

Sainsburys jeans wear much better imo. They have less stretch though. Much sturdier fabric.

I love M&S jeggings but they always fade and go wrinkly like a deflated balloon after a few month of wear.

Sooverthemill · 20/01/2022 08:57

High street jeans aren't great quality. Levi's are much better. The lower the cotton content ( and the higher the elastane) the more they will wear out. Decent premium denim costs more but if you are seconding £40 every 2-3 months that adds up. I now only buy premium denim and get it is sales or on sites like eBay often BNWT. You just need to know your size which you can find out by trying some on. I highly recommend Levi,Boyish, Agolde, Citizens of Humanity and Made in Heaven but there are loads of brands.

Cheshiresun · 20/01/2022 09:06

This has happened to every pair of Levi jeans I've had, worn out and becoming ripped far too quickly. Currently buying M&S jeans for the last 6 months and haven't had the same problem, yet, which are also £50+ cheaper than Levi.
