Mulberry Bayswater

I’ve wanted a Mulberry Bayswater in oxblood for a long time. After a few recommendations on MN I joined a few FB groups and someone is selling a used one for considerably less than when purchased new.

I’m really tempted and the seller has been great, sending plenty of pictures etc. It is still expensive though so will be a significant purchase.

I’ve heard some people saying that Mulberry is dated and not so good anymore, is that a thing? If I do buy it, it will be something I will use every day for a long time and don’t want to regret it.

Anyone have one or any comments on it?

I've got an oxblood bayswater that I've had for about 15 years, I used it quite a lot when I first got it but only use it as an overnight bag now. The bag itself is quite heavy, and I do think it's quite a dated look now.

Exclusionsapply · 15/01/2022 20:20

I have a black one and I use it everyday for work. I love it. Would never sell it. It’s can get heavy though. For me it’s not a bag for shopping in town on a Saturday. Or for going out at night. Nothing dated about them at all.

NeedWineNow · 15/01/2022 23:37

I've got one in tan (Oak) which is about 12 years old now.

It's a bit heavy, even with not much in it, and has worn on the corners. That said, I quite like that it looks a bit battered now, and the leather has softened up. I don't often reach for it though, especially as I'm not in the office much at the moment as I used to use it for work. I'd never sell it though (my mum would never forgive me as she's got her eye on it, as has one of my friends!).

I’ve got one in oak - there is a lovely oxblood one on Naughti Pigin’s Nest at the moment. I think it’s a classic bag. Yes it’s really heavy so I don’t use it unless I have a reason to but it’s lovely.

Tinkletwat · 16/01/2022 00:26

Do you like it because of the style or because it's Mulberry? Is there another bag you like that's a similar price but isn't so ubiquitous, I personally thought this was a dated style 10 years ago but I'm not really a Mulberry fan as I see one on every 5th woman.

Frollop · 16/01/2022 07:07

From what I've heard it's a heavy bag before putting anything in it so that would put me off.
I'm also weary of fakes so would not buy via Facebook.

riverofsweetcorn · 16/01/2022 07:21

I have a black croc one, it's about ten years old and has sat in my wardrobe for the past six.

They're a really awkward style; big and heavy to hold but the straps are a tad too short to use as a shoulder bag.

And they really do look dated now. There are so many other options out there in that price bracket that look better and are more practical.

JohnnyEyebrows · 16/01/2022 09:41

I just sold the exact one you're talking about. Paid 995 for it in 2017 and sold it for 300 so A a poor investment and B I didn't love the bag

Heavy and a bit unwieldy

NewPage · 16/01/2022 10:05

Thank you everyone for your really helpful comments. I like the bag, style and look not so much as it is a ‘Mulberry’. It reminds me a bit of the Hermes Kelly bag, but that is totally out of my budget!
The FB is an official group and the seller collects Mulberry, she has shared her collection photos (over 15 bags!) and photos of the bag, including inner labels and tags etc. It all looks very genuine and the group is a buying and selling space. I am a bit wary about fakes but was suggested on MN to buy used as many £100’s cheaper.
Wish I’d known you were selling @JohnnyEyebrows as I could have purchased it 😀

I have a Bayswater in Oak. It's ten years old now. I still love it and don't think it's dated at all. I tend to use my large Oxblood Del Rey far more though in the Winter. - it's smaller, fits well on my arm and has a front flap which is handy for keys and the ubiquitous mask. The Del Rey is my all time favourite Mulberry design - wish they hadn't discontinued it.

frenchfancy55 · 16/01/2022 11:50

I bought the Bayswater in tan in 2007 and loved it! Used it a lot for a couple of years then stopped using it on maternity leave as it was too heavy for every day use.
I passed it to my younger sister last year - she has a completely different style to me, wears lots of tea dresses and very feminine style for work and it looks great and she loves what she considers a bit of a retro bag! 😂
I wouldn’t buy another, too uncomfortable but go for it if you like it.

Ladyladylady · 16/01/2022 12:07

I have one in a charcoal grey colour. I used it more in my last job which needed more formal clothes but much less now I am more casually dressed. It’s heavy though but still looks classic to me.

slipperyeel · 16/01/2022 12:41

I think it’s classic rather than dated but is definitely a “work bag” IMO

AmethystMoonShine · 16/01/2022 13:07

I've got an oxblood Bayswater and use it quite a bit. I carry a lot about with me, so although I used to use it for my previous office based work, I use it now just out and about. I wouldn't' use it as a 'going out' bag though, it's too big.
It isn't a lightweight bag but then they're also really robust, not sure you can have it both ways?
I don't consider it dated but then I only consider what I like, not what anyones else thinks, so not an issue for me. It it in my opinion a beautiful colour and a very practical style.

Bunny2021 · 16/01/2022 13:25

I love my Bayswater but it is so heavy - even when there’s hardly anything in it. However, they are a classic and I’ll never get rid of mine.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/01/2022 14:19

Oh wow I have converted one of these ever since a lovely and stylish rep visited me with one. Hearing they are heavy without anything in them has put me off quite a bit :/

Sexnotgender · 16/01/2022 14:25

A Bayswater is a classic. Oxblood is lovely.

Thewayshetalks · 16/01/2022 14:29

I have it in oxblood, loved it at the time (about 9/10 years ago) now it hasn’t seen the light of day for years and I am trying to sell it

EmilyEmmabob · 16/01/2022 18:14

I have a chocolate one that I bought in 2007 and used for work, definitely hard wearing and I love it. It's looking a bit battered now but I still use it, the leather is NVT and looks amazing. I bought an oak one in 2019 and the leather is different, it's still nice but has gold hardware instead of brass so doesn't look as classic. My sister has an oxblood bays which she bought last year and the leather is so plastic, it just doesn't have the same luxurious feel as the chocolate NVT one.

They are heavy but I've always used one for work and they're great.

Inglot · 16/01/2022 18:36

I have a mulberry Bayswater in oxblood and I love it. The leather quality is superb.

People say Mulberry is dated because a new creative director started in 2015 and quality declined quite dramatically. Although I bought mine in 2015, the bag was older stock. My SA at Mulberry told me there was a lot of demand for old style Bayswater bags while they still had them, although this may have been to encourage me to buy quickly! Vintage mulberry bags (pre 2015) are still very desirable since the quality is so much better than the current bags.

One handbag brand I would really recommend is Strathberry, they're very similar what Mulberry used to be, and the royals/celebs love them. I know Megan Markle is a big fan. IMO the quality is much better than Mulberry, particularly the recent bags. Strathberry is at a similar price point to Mulberry (maybe slightly cheaper).

HumpreyDowny · 16/01/2022 19:48

Classics don't date, bayswater is def one! Oxblood is my favourite, a classy colour that goes well with so many colours, don't hesitate, go for it.

ajandjjmum · 16/01/2022 20:26

DD has an Oxblood Bayswater which she has used for 7/8 years, but I noticed that my not so often used Black Bayswater is now seen on her arm pretty regularly! Grin Great quality.

RunnerDown · 16/01/2022 20:38

I love mulberry bags and ox blood is the perfect colour- it goes with everything. I don’t personally like the bayswater much. I’m petite and it’s quite heavy. But I think it’s a classic.
I have bought ( and sold) several bags from the Facebook selling pages. I think the admin folk are very careful about the bags on the site. If you try to sell a bag you need to submit very specific photos which can be used to authenticate the bag or your post is rejected. There are lots of women on those pages who know lots about mulberry and would report if they thought a bag was a fake. Much safer than e-bay.
You can also ask a company like Authentic8 if they will look at photos of a specific bag to check it. They charge a small fee - usually about £10.

NewPage · 16/01/2022 21:40

Thank you so much for all your positive comments, I’m feeling excited 😀. Will post a picture once I have it x

I bought my tan one about 15 years ago and a smaller nayswater (forgot what its called) in black. I also uave two Anthony messenger bags. I wear one of these bags every single day and I have done so for over ten years. I look after them diligently. I use my bayswater for work and sometimes as hand luggage (well before covid). Its a good bag for when you have kids. Soace for crayons, books, wipes etc. Love mine
