Mulberry Bayswater

I’ve wanted a Mulberry Bayswater in oxblood for a long time. After a few recommendations on MN I joined a few FB groups and someone is selling a used one for considerably less than when purchased new.

I’m really tempted and the seller has been great, sending plenty of pictures etc. It is still expensive though so will be a significant purchase.

I’ve heard some people saying that Mulberry is dated and not so good anymore, is that a thing? If I do buy it, it will be something I will use every day for a long time and don’t want to regret it.

Anyone have one or any comments on it?

I’ve got a tan one, in fact I ended up with 2 at one point! Gave one to my sister, still have the other one kicking about my wardrobe. I don’t use it, haven’t for years. I know some will say it’s a classic timeless bag but I think it’s ages badly, the shape is bulky and not my taste anymore, I have no idea why I still have it really!
I hope you love yours, I really did love mine when I first had them but think I was just giddy about spending money Confused

I have a black one which I only seem to use for funerals. It's heavy, stiff and uncomfortable.

HumpreyDowny · 17/01/2022 09:03

Yes to the poster who mentioned kids stuff, it's a Great bag for that. I use mine with an organising insert bought from etsy, they have one for each model. Wipes, nappies, entertainment, takes a tonne of stuff, and much better than hideous baby bags. Wish someone had told me that with my first.

Ooh that's a great idea to repurpose as a baby bag - can I ask though didn't it feel a bit awkward to carry around plus a baby as not quite long enough straps for a shoulder bag, and also if you hung it in your buggy did this damage the straps?

I have one. I think it's dated. It's heavy and I haven't used it in years. You may be able to grab a bargain on npn.com I wouldn't pay full price for one now.

Ireolu · 18/01/2022 17:51

Sorry that's npn.co.uk. not affiliated but reputable reseller.

Hmmm, interesting. Some really mixed views! I’ve heard they’ve made the one lighter, but new Mulberry bags not as good quality leather.

I still love them.

@Frollop

From what I've heard it's a heavy bag before putting anything in it so that would put me off. I'm also weary of fakes so would not buy via Facebook.
Good FB groups are very hard to get fakes passed. The admins and other members know a lot about their brands.
NewPage · 18/01/2022 18:11

Thanks for that, it is a FB that was recommended through MN and they do seem to be very strict/on top of it all. Plus seller has sent pictures of her collection, she has 20 Mulberry bags!!

NewPage · 18/01/2022 18:12

Should add, not selling all 20. Just the one.

Mulberry bags are a good buy but only second hand.

I wouldn't buy a brand new mulberry as their resale value is not great. If you have a quick scour on eBay you'll see hundreds of nearly new mulberry bags that just aren't shifting at the prices people want to sell them at.

While the ones that end up on an eBay auction barely make much considering their retail value. I'd have a look on eBay auction first and compare prices.

I have a Bayswater that's almost 18 years old and I still love it and use it. They are heavier than the average tote style bag but I think that adds to their value and sturdiness. I bought it as a special treat when I was pregnant with DS2 with the sole purpose of using it as a nappy bag/general clutter you have to carry around with a newborn and toddler bag. It's a little worn now but I think that adds to its charm. It's been unceremoniously thrown into car boots/foot-wells, pushed along the floor when arms full of baby/toddler in a queue, DS2 chewed on the handles when teething, been used as an overnight bag so stretched out to full capacity and I love that it has all this history. Next to a battered old Gap leather satchel which is a similar age and also just gets better, it's one of the few things I would want to keep without hesitation.

I had a Bayswater Heritage in oak but sold it back to mulberry as I’d completely abused it and it looked knackered.

I couldn’t decide what to put the money towards and have ended up buying a Bayswater tote. The size is so great for taking to work meetings (fits my laptop) or travelling.

I purchased my first Bayswater in black NVT in 2019 from Mulberry in New Bond Street and loved it so much I purchased it again in Oak NVT a two months later. I had wanted a Bayswater since 2003 before it became the “IT” bag toted by everyone from Kate Moss to Blake Lively but being a poor penniless student at the time, I could only afford to have one in my dreams. I love the Bayswater for its classic, understated and timeless look not to mention the quality of Mulberry’s NVT leather and the fact they only look better with age. That is important to me as I want a bag I can wear from now until my old age and pass down.
Buy what makes you happy :)

I have an old tan Bayswater. I never use it - probably not been out of my cupboard for 5 years. It’s so stiff and heavy. I agree with the poster who said Del Rey was better. That was my everyday work bag pre pandemic - don’t know why they discontinued it.

Abra1d1 · 19/01/2022 12:56

Del Reys are great. My daughter has a vintage black small one that has been bashed around university and still looks great with all kinds of outfits.

Bellex · 19/01/2022 13:26

I have a mulberry Bayswater in oak. I got it for my 21st and I’m 26 now and I love it. Mulberry to me is classic, I like not everyone has it

Isabelle70 · 19/01/2022 19:24

I have a Bayswater in black NVT leather, it's my winter work bag. Doesn't mind the rain, holds the lunch on the way to work and a quick random lunch shop in M&S!
I can't get mine on my shoulder so it's the crook of the arm or handholding bag.
