What pricey beauty products are not worth it?

I don't mind paying for expensive products as long as you get what you pay for. From your experience what expensive products aren't worth how expensive they are, and why? I usually like Loccitane stuff but I got the verbena deodorant and it's useless, I'll be sticking to my usual Boots buys for deodorant.

Charlotte Tilbury. Most anti-ageing products are dreams sold for premium prices. Cheap mascaras like Maybelline are good value versus spending tons from its sister brands. I'm quite cynical. Most products are bullshit dressed in nice packaging.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 13/01/2022 16:34

Molton Brown eau de perfum only lasts a few seconds. The scents are gorgeous but they just disappear.

JaneJeffer · 13/01/2022 17:35

Lancôme moisturisers for me because my skin just can't absorb them and they pill off.

doadeer · 13/01/2022 17:53

I got a small La Mer moisturiser in my advent calendar. It was nice but that's it.

My skin felt dry the next morning multiple times which it never does with my normal La Roche Posay moisturiser. It's about £200 a pot.

Would 100% not be worth it for my skin.

KirstenBlest · 13/01/2022 18:32

@JaneJeffer, Maybe you are putting too much on. I had it with one of them

I think with most products most of the price is for the hope they are selling you and for the packaging

I'm another fan of reliable products from the budget ranges

GettingStuffed · 13/01/2022 21:48

Too faced plumbing lip gloss, it burns like hell but little plumping, mind you others swear by it.

JaneJeffer · 13/01/2022 21:59

I don't think so @KirstenBlest it just isn't compatible with my skin for some reason. I don't like it anyway because it's over-fragranced. I'll stick to Nivea Grin

ChrissyPlummer · 13/01/2022 22:15

Touché Eclat and the YSL mascara (faux cils?). The TE does nothing and I’ve tried the mascara twice and bought from different places but while my lashes looked amazing at first, it is the flakiest mascara I’ve ever used.

Inmypjsagain · 13/01/2022 22:17

I’ve seen a lot of people who really dislike Charlotte Tilbury products but I think they’re great (with the exception of the mascara!)

Agree with touché exclat. Lancôme mascara drying, clumpy and flakey imo. Never understood the la mer hype either

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 13/01/2022 23:18

La mer. I splashed out on the normal size, and it was no different (on me) than a tub of nivea. I think maybe you would benefit more if your skin was dry. I wasn't made aware of this at the relevant time Hmm

earsup · 13/01/2022 23:27

Well....when I taught marketing at Uni, 80% of purchase price of expensive products is spent on packaging, the jars and promotion....so it doesn't leave much for the actual product !!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 13/01/2022 23:54

So many. See above re. Marketing.

L'Oréal products are always a good choice because of their budget, r&d capabilities, experience. Basically it's their core competency.

I remember years ago buying a Chanel nail polish and feeling so conned by it. It was useless. It was only afterwards I thought why would Chanel be any good at making nail polish? That's not their core business at all. No doubt it's made in the same Coty factory that many other brands of nail polishes are made in.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 14/01/2022 00:03

Ha! I just googled, Coty do make Chanel cosmetics.

2birdsonawire · 14/01/2022 00:11

I have found a few things that have just been a waste of money for me..

-Too faced better than sex mascara, honestly prefer drugstore.

-Too faced hangover primer - absolute waste of money yet people rave about it?! It has a weird smell and does nothing, mind you I think primers are a scam anyway.

-Urban Decay all nighter setting spray, did nothing for me much prefer Mac fix plus.

  • Any liquid lipstick, they make your lips look so dry excuse my language but I have been told my lips look like a 'cats bum' when wearing it!!!
  • I have a thing for eyeshadow palletes and I really couldn't get on with the Naked pallets, I know they're a holy grail for most people but I really just prefer Morphe.

Sorry for the long reply Grin

DreamTheMoors · 14/01/2022 00:35

I misunderstood this & thought your question was what beauty products were worth it.

Anything DERMALOGICA is worth the money, especially their scrub. Seriously good products.
But 2.6 oz at $66 American is ridiculous.

I love the brand, but can rarely afford it. I’m too busy buying food.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/01/2022 01:25

Olaplex
I bought 3+6
They were £25ish , I am forcing myself to use them up but basica;lly they are Emporers New Clothes on my hair

Totalwasteofpaper · 14/01/2022 04:23

Agree with others on
Charlotte Tilbury
Le mer
Olaplex (sadly)
ysl touché eclat

Also agree on dermalogica being good.
I haven't had a bad product from Bobbi brown or Mac (but I am picky about what I buy)

Fun fact: Chanel make up is /was made in the same factory as bourjois back in the day. Not too sure about now

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 14/01/2022 09:32

Olaplex made a big difference to my hair the first time I used it. Now it doesn't bother to make the effort. Reminds me of my husband when we were dating.... I wouldn't replace it, but might have a go at the Superdrug dupe. I agree Dermalogica is great stuff, but too expensive. I have my 'hero' products I'm prepared to be a bit more spendy on, but this doesn't include any Dermalogica.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/01/2022 10:29

I wouldn't replace it, but might have a go at the Superdrug dupe

I bought something from Superdrug that was a "plex" there were 3 sachets to use in conjunction.
I cannot remember what it did for my hair but it riled my scalp (even though I'm careful not to plaster my scalp in it )

Superdrug Argan Hair therapy pre-treat ( in an orange-y colour tub/gren label ) is good
Philip Kingsley Elasticiser is good but you need to use it a few times to get the effect .

BusterGonad · 14/01/2022 10:31

Urban Decay Naked palettes, really clumpy glitter, too many shades, powder drop out on cheeks, they are just hard work ime. I've had a few and they do not Wow me at all. I much prefer my Shiseido quads and my Mac X 9 palettes.

KirstenBlest · 14/01/2022 10:56

@JaneJeffer, I like Nivea Soft.

I used to buy brands like Chanel, Lancome etc but now don't bother. I did like Lancome and Clarins make-up, and Helena Rubinstein, but now can't be arsed with fancy packaging.

I don't like packaging that falls apart or looks tatty within a few weeks

@2birdsonawire, you know some nice people. Grin

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 14/01/2022 11:14

@70isaLimitNotaTarget thanks. Good to know.

Luckingfovely · 14/01/2022 11:19

You can define any of the brands that have counters in good department stores as overpriced - because you are paying for the global branding, design, counter space, staff, and on and on, and only a very small percentage on what is in the product.

What sickens me about most of these brands - apart from their products are not much different from high street brands except for better fragrances - is they burn or destroy excess stock every year rather than selling it at a discount and devaluing the brand.

I truly believe skincare is moving in a different direction now. It started with The Ordinary, and now there are lots of others, who offer specific serums with specific active ingredients, so that you can customise your skincare routine to exactly what your face needs.

I.e. I would never buy a generic serum or moisturiser now.

I use a Niacamide serum followed by a Vitamin C serum in the morning; and then Niacimide followed by a Retinol Serum in the evening, with a Rosehip or Almond oil over the top.

Rationale:

Niacamide - clears skin, declogs pores
Vitamin C - brightness and glowiness
Retinol - anti-aging
Oil - moisture

Obviously everyone has different needs, but that's what works for me - and I can buy all of the products for less than one Chanel cream.

I recommend this brand for highly effective basics at an excellent price:

I bought some Dior products just before Christmas - a glowy blusher, silver eyeliner and red lipstick.

To be honest - the blusher and silver eyeliner I could've got elsewhere - not sure how much cheaper though.

The red lipstick I do like only because I never wear my MAC or NARs equivalents.

I never buy high end moisturisers as they're a waste of money in my opinion - when I was young - 18/20 I did use a lovely Lancome moisturiser which was good but that's long been discontinued.

Chanel Vitalumiere, their apricot/peach inner rim eyeliner and also Dior Quads eyeshadows are products I love. Also Bobbi Brown/MAC bronzers.

Gonnagetgoing · 14/01/2022 11:58

I've been gifted Creme de la Mer moisturiser and Charlotte Tilbury makeup in the past and bought Tilbury too.

On the whole I can't stand Tilbury - it's really overpriced, colours aren't brilliant etc.

CDLM moisturiser was ok too but I wouldn't buy it for me!
