Is £58 too much for a jumper?

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 06/01/2022 11:13

I've ordered a new jumper from Jigsaw in the sale. Original cost £145.

I thought it was around the £50 mark, but it has arrived today and cost £58. I think I must have rounded it down in my head.

It's cashmere blend, looks lovely and is very soft, but now I am beating myself up about the price.

Would you keep it? I'm OK financially, have about 10k savings, own my own car, have a mortgage etc.

I feel off about it which is a shame. It must be guilt but I don't know why!! I'm the type of person who only pays £11 for a haircut Grin

Can someone tell me I can treat myself?

Lovely, it's cashmere too. Enjoy it. Cashmere is always expensive. I have wooly/cashmere jumpers, they're so warm. I wear a thin t shirt underneath them. I wash the t-shirts and rarely wash the actual jumpers. When they do need washing, I use a gentle detergent and put it on the coolest, shortest wash (20 degrees for 30 minutes).

I'll bet I'm not the only one googling the Jigsaw sale now 😂

I've been googling cashmere jumpers all morning, which is why I pounced on this thread! After buying nowt for myself for 2 long years and sitting working in old Matalan jumpers and pyjama bottoms I've rediscovered clothes! Nice clothes!

It's lovely OP. Enjoy it!

millymae · 06/01/2022 12:05

I have this jumper - bought with 20% off full price so I paid a fair bit more than you. I wish I hadn’t bought it!
If you are worried about spending £58 return it because it bobbles terribly especially if you wear a coat over it.
I have bought from jigsaw for years and have sadly never learned my lesson about their sweaters. They look good but are not worth the money and don’t last. Sorry OP!

Gonnagetgoing · 06/01/2022 12:07

about average price and for a cashmere blend.

If it's a really nice jumper which I like, the style and colour then I don't mind paying more for it.

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/01/2022 12:08

I'm now off to look at the Jigsaw sale.

You must liked it some point when ordering it.
One thing to look at sale items is apparently to ask yourself- would I buy if would be at a full price?
If so- keep it.
You only gonna regret it when you return it.
It happened to me many many times when I bought something and returned it thinking- oh it’s too pricey, I don’t need that- Only to re purchase it few weeks again mostly for full price on EBay.
A few weeks ago I was in H&M trying an amazing chunky red cardigan for £35.
I had a discount I could use with it 25% off in that day but I decided not to buy.
I regretted it few days later and went back to see if I can buy it- it was sold out even online as it went into sale for £12!
I managed to found one on EBay for literally full price of £35.

I bought it thinking I could get for cheaper before.

My big dog needs jumpers in winter to keep the chill off her old, arthritic hips. They cost £44.

Your Jigsaw jumper seems a bit of a bargain to me. Enjoy it, wear it and don’t do the ‘save it for best’ thing,

teaandchocolate1 · 06/01/2022 12:12

That's a gorgeous jumper.

Off to the Jigsaw website now 😁

If you like it and it fits just enjoy it

UglyModernWindows · 06/01/2022 13:39

If you think you'll get a good wear out of it, then keep it!

I bought a 100% Cashmere jumper from Wyse London which cost £154 in the sale! I only have couple of jumpers so invested in this one. It's lovely but it still bobbles. I think they all do to some extent. On another thread here there was link to a blog about cashmere and wool. I picked up a tip from there that you can use a regular emery board file to remove the pilling. It works and no need for battery operated gizmos.

I love cashmere but have only few items as they need babying so much. Hence I only have few very special pieces.

Riverlee · 06/01/2022 13:43

I brought a jumper from white stuff reduced to £60 (Fromm£75). It’s more than I usually pay, but on its first two outings, I got compliments, so it was definantly worth it.

If you love it, keep it!

ExConstance · 06/01/2022 14:13

Very nice jumper. If you want to see how reasonably priced it is have a look at the Brora sale!

IvorCutler · 06/01/2022 14:14

It’s lovely and definitely a good price for what it is!

Snowisfallinghere · 06/01/2022 14:26

I think between £50-£100 is fine for cashmere-merino blend jumpers, I have a selection of them from Woolovers and I really think they're great value considering how much I wear them. I basically rotate between the same handful of these jumpers all winter and I expect them to last at least 5 years despite being worn and washed regularly. If they get a hole, you sew it up rather than throwing it away. I also find them much warmer.

Spending £12 on a cheap polyester jumper instead can be false economy as they either bobble, look misshapen, or the style becomes outdated, or you find yourself buying new ones more often because they're just not as perfect as a real wool/merino/cashmere jumper. The number of cheap jumpers I've probably only kept for a year in the past is insane, and probably adds up to hundreds of pounds. I'd have been better off investing in a small collection of quality ones years before I finally did.

Nitgel · 06/01/2022 15:17

i always buy i the jigsaw sale, just got the pink/purple cardi and it's £££ and not even warm. but it looks so nice.

DSGR · 06/01/2022 16:18

Just get a cashmere comb, they bobble at first and then settle down. SO warm

Crossfitwidow · 06/01/2022 16:23

Treat yo’self. We’re a long time dead!! Klarna is my new best friend…my bank balance not so much!

lindyloo57 · 06/01/2022 16:31

If you love it keep it, I used to buy cheaper jumpers with acrylic in but no more, from last year or so I'm trying to less but better, I do have around7 or 8 cashmere jumpers that I only buy when on sale, and they definitely last longer, I recently sent back a mint velvet jumper was £55 down from £89 but it looked like it would bobble very quickly, so you still have to be careful when buying higher end.

lindyloo57 · 06/01/2022 16:33

totally agree with Snowisfallinghere

lisaandalan · 06/01/2022 17:28

Definitely not. X

Lipsandlashes · 06/01/2022 17:37

As I’ve got older and more financially stable I can really see the pleasure and benefit in good quality clothes, bags and shoes. I don’t feel guilty at spending a bit more on these items. I absolutely love Cashmere jumpers and DH bought me one from The White Company for Christmas.

There was a woman's magazine years ago that used to do a 'price per wear' calculation on nice clothes.

So £58 on a jumper (with no transport or parking costs), wear it twice a week for the next few months and again over next winter.

£58 divided by 60 works out at less than a quid a wear and that's the absolute max as it will last longer than that.

I'm currently wearing an All Saints cashmere jumper that I bought in the sale at least six years ago. It has many winters left in it.

Badnightguaranteed · 06/01/2022 17:59

You do have to be a little careful with cashmere and merino together though. Well just blends in general. They bobble badly.
