Mine is just a mess and it would be great to have some clear strategy for what goes where. Any tips would be fab please :)

I do mine in colour - white and one side , black at the other .
Then in a sort of order like White/cream/pastel/blue/purple/red/green/brown/black+white/black

I do a remove and put away twice a year , get out my stored clothes , decide what I;m keeping .
Decide what I need

By garment type, so dresses, skirts, trousers, tops, jumpers/cardigans. I chose one item each morning that I really want to wear and go from there.

cruelladepoppins · 03/01/2022 21:09

I hang my warm tights on a scarf hanger on the LH side; then belts (again on a hanger), then I group clothes by colour: white, red, yellow, green, blue, purple, grey and black. Most of my clothes are black but I am trying to wear more colour, so the colourful ones are closer to hand than the black.

Shoes andbags are in a different place entirely. Out-of-season clothes live in a suitcase elsewhere, too, and I swap them around when the weather changes.

I tried to hang them all in order of length, once (a la MarieKondo) rather than by colour, but that just didn't work for me.

Dinosauraddict · 03/01/2022 21:11

Mine is by garment type too as well as level of formality and work/non-work, so the right half is 'work', left half is ' non-work' with most formal work dresses (for interviews etc) then standard work dresses, then work skirts, work cardigans, then work blouses. On the other side it goes scarves, formal dresses (for weddings etc), standard dresses, skirts, tunics, then tops. All on the same hangers, all facing the same way.

L to R
Long items and formal wear
Blouses and shirts
Tops
Short dresses
Jackets
Skirts

I have 2 1.5m rails on opposite sides of the (small) walk in wardrobe/dressing room. Then I have shelves where I fold and stack my knitwear. Then I have a set of deep drawers where I keep casual tops, Pjs , fitness gear, underwear, all in their own drawers and I have sectioners to keep socks/tights separate bras/knickers etc.
Everything on slim velvet hangers all facing the right way. Only one item on each hanger.

Big sort out every few months.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 03/01/2022 21:12

Garment type.

Nitgel · 03/01/2022 21:14

Store by type in under bed boxes that I also put in the wardrobe. Can easily find things that way

Mine is organised by garment type and I do Project 333 so I don’t have much stuff.
In my wardrobe I have coats, tops, shirts, dresses etc hanging up.
In a chest of drawers I have knitwear. It’s all pure wool so I don’t want to hang it up in case the shoulders get stretched.
I have a drawer with loungewear, dog walking stuff and yoga wear in.
I pack away the out of season clothes.
Happy organising!

Bussinbussin · 04/01/2022 02:01

It's very complex, I won't bore you with all the gory details but generally things are sorted by garment type, then sorted again within that e.g. casual/office/formal for dresses, by weight/warmth for jackets and coats.

If I have a bunch of similar items (e.g. button up blouses) I try to pull from the left and add laundered things to the right to make sure everything gets a turn Grin

Sorting everything by colour would do my head in, if for example you want to wear a skirt, how do you remember what skirts you have when they're mixed in with everything else?

IDKAYBIF32 · 04/01/2022 02:02

I have a freestanding hanging rail for everything, nothing gets folded away (mostly because I'm too lazy).

L to R
Handbags
Scarves
Coats and jackets
Jumpers, in a sort of colour order
Jeans and denim skirt
Going out tops, skirts, dresses
Walking clothes
Workout clothes
Loungewear
Pyjamas

I want to try project 333, so need to have a sort out!

RosesAndHellebores · 04/01/2022 02:12

I have about 7 feet of wardrobe with long and short drops (short drops have shelving above for bags/shoes/etc). Dress section, tops section, trouser section, evening wear, smaller sizes Sad. Coats are in the spare room.

Mine is ordered this way too....I wear scrubs for work but they are not in my wardrobe
Lacedwithgrace · 04/01/2022 02:23

T shirts, leggings, jeans, shorts, pjs are in seperate shelves and drawers in the wardrobe. Then rails are ordered by garment type- dresses, blouses, casual overshirts, jackets, skirts and smart trousers. They're not organised by colour because they're either black or grey. I have 4 wardrobes- 2 for winter, 2 for summer

Giggorata · 04/01/2022 05:03

I am just switching over, from by ordering by colour to ordering by garment type, with sub sets of colour and work/home.
Colour alone didn't work for me. It remains to be seen if this will..
It is absolute chaos at the moment, and is the main job I have to complete tomorrow, not looking forward to,it.

Figgyboa · 04/01/2022 06:31

Hanging in my wardrobe, garment and then colour...
Short sleeve blouses, light to dark
Long sleeve
Cardigans
Dresses
Jeans
Outdoor jackets
(All light to dark)
Jumpers snd sweaters are folded on the shelf above along with scarfs/gloves and handbags.
Shoes on shelves in the bottom of the wardrobe.
Everything else has a drawer in a dresser, again sorted by color

Tenam · 04/01/2022 07:19

Interview suit/funeral dress
Dressy dresses
Day dresses
Dressy tops
Day tops (arranged L-R spaghetti strap, shell, t shirt, long sleeve)
Cardigans
Jackets

Also loosely arranged by colour within each category but I don’t worry too much about that because I don’t have huge amounts so can easily see all of my tops.

Trousers are in a drawer along with yoga wear and vest tops/thermal tops.
Jumpers are on shelves

StarlightLady · 04/01/2022 07:35

Organised chaos, Grinwhich is te-organised by garment type every so often!

StarlightLady · 04/01/2022 07:36

Te-organised - re-organised!

ToykotoLosAngeles · 04/01/2022 08:59

Not well really. 2 large drawers - one jeans, one folded tops e.g. t shirts and 4 pairs of rolled joggers. Half a wardrobe - long sleeved tops, jumpers, couple of dresses, boots on top shelf and shoes on the bottom. Upstairs wardrobe - coats and hoodies. Random plastic boxes in boiler cupboard for handbags!

Sooverthemill · 04/01/2022 10:16

In wardrobe hanging left to right: skirts, trousers, 'evening tops', sleeveless tops, short sleeve tops, long sleeve shirts grouped by colour, dresses
On shelf over : sweatshirts and gym gear ( I do not go to the gym)
Under: some jumpers
Shoes and boots in boxes
Sandals in boxes
In narrow wardrobe: my 'good' jumpers folded and in a nagging thing from ikea. Next to that, jackets eg leather, denim
In chest of drawers: underwear, pyjamas, tees and jersey tops
Jeans grouped by brand and wash
In box under bed : summer tees and white jeans
Coats are in spare bedroom as are the few definitely summer clothes at the moment

CrimbleCrumble1 · 04/01/2022 10:30

The middle of my wardrobe has the clothes I wear the most. On one side are bottom halves and jackets on the other side dresses and tops. Every month or so I review the clothes, think about the weather or occasions I have etc , I’ve done it like this so I have about 10 easy to grab outfits. On the edges of the wardrobe are clothes I wear the least often, so for instances dresses I wear when I cruise.
I have a strict one in one our policy with my clothes. Then not only do I think do I need something new I also think do I want to get rid of anything.

FastFood · 04/01/2022 11:09

On the rails, I have:

  • Tops (shirts / blouses)
  • Jumpers and sweaters
  • "Long stuff" such as dresses, dungarees, jumpsuit
  • Jackets and coats
Got exactly the right number of hangers so I apply a strict "one in, one out" policy.

On the top shelf, I have small baskets with panties, nightwear, socks, headbands, caps, beanies, and also perfumes, serums and creams, and all my glasses.

I always keep a big part of this shelf clear as it's where I put my clothes for the next day every evening.

On the middle shelf, I have 4 small piles of tops by colour

  • Black
  • Grey
  • White
  • Navy and breton

On the bottom shelf, I have 3 piles of bottoms

  • Jeans
  • Other trousers
  • Skirts
