2k to spend on a piece of jewellery. What would you buy?

A very kind relative would like to give me 2k to spend on a piece of jewellery. What would you go for?
Something everyday or formal?
Earrings? Necklace? I am completely at a loss! I like jewellery, tend to prefer classic style pieces. Probably slightly prefer gold but silver looks nice too.
This is a nice problem to have I realise!

I absolutely recommend diamond earrings. It's a great choice. They look gorgeous and also hold their value. I bought a tiny pair of cluster diamond earrings when I was 21. They cost £250 which was a lot of money back in the 80s. I've traded them in a few times and now have a lovely solitaire pair that cost a bomb. I wear them all day every day and every pair has made me happy when I catch a glimpse of them sparkling.

The only pair I've ever had a problem with were screw backs. The screw fittings would work themselves loose over a few days and eventually one fell off. Luckily the earring stayed in and I got it repaired. It was expensive as I had to have the whole earring remade not just buy a new screw.

My current pair were made for me by a jeweller in Hatton Garden and when I requested a screw back he was firmly of the opinion that a butterfly you have to squeeze to get on was much more secure. That was 6 years ago and they have been fine so far. I don't have to keep checking them like I did the screw backs.

I don't know where you live but somewhere with lots of jewellers and shop around as prices will be competitive. Hatton Garden is good, so is the Brighton Jewellery quarter and The Lanes (rather than the Laines) in Brighton.

I’d go to an antique jewellery store and see what caught my eye. Antique jewellery is one of my passions so with 2K I’d be very happy Smile. Or I’d possibly commission something from a jeweller.

I hope you find something you love, OP.

baffledbunny · 01/01/2022 14:11

I'd buy a solitaire diamond set if I could - earrings, ring, necklace/pendant and/or bracelet too if possible. I don't know if £2k would stretch to all for a good quality set that but if you buy a few pieces that way you could mix and match when it suits.

Van cleef marachite clover necklace

Have you seen Ruth Tomlinson's stuff. It's lush.

thetinsoldier · 01/01/2022 14:55

A ring or a bracelet, so you can actually see it on you! Solid gold bangles or a tennis bracelet? The Lanes in Brighton is full of jewellers.

time2tork · 01/01/2022 14:58

Anything in Moissanite, where you get the real stone (which is actually more sparkly than a diamond with the same durability).

Don't waste your money on Diamonds, 2k will get you dull chippings. They are overly inflated due to marketing.

Whereas with Moissanite you're actually getting a real stone (not chippings) and it's more sparkly. Shop around and get your item made in platinum not silver or gold!

The stone will last forever without getting scratched etc so make sure the metal is as durable.

A watch like a Cartier Tank,Tag Heuer or Hermes. If you want jewellery ; something from Cartier,Van Cleef,Tiffany or De Beers should retain or go up in value in the long run.

MrsCat1 · 01/01/2022 15:59

I'd second the poster who suggested Ruth Tomlinson's stuff. I have a beautiful ring of her's. I bought it with some money my mum gave me after she was burgled and all her jewellery was taken. It's a lovely thing.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/01/2022 16:02

I agree with everyone who recommends diamond earrings. They will be a classic and staple you'll never regret owning.

AgeingDoc · 01/01/2022 16:07

If it has to be spent on jewellery I would buy a watch as at least that is useful and can probably be worn a lot. Plus you can easily see it yourself, unlike earrings or a necklace.

TinyRebel · 01/01/2022 16:12

I'd absolutely love anything from www.stepheneinhorn.co.uk/
Some classic necklaces and earrings as well a really unusual pieces.

Hmm there’s always one. Usually to be found on the handbag threads, but can make their way to jewellery ones too.

waltzingparrot · 01/01/2022 18:19

I'd get a jewellery designer to make me something original and I'd probably want a pendent or ring and complimentary earrings.

For £2k this is 100% what I would do. You will be able to get a beautiful custom necklace, earrings, ring and bracelet set in 10ct or 14ct gold for that price I would think.

On etsy there are amazing jewelers in India.. I have used golden bird for several pieces of jewelery and can attest to the quality.
Vijay will literally make anything you want.
I have had him make custom replicas of various pieces ( like boodles) and they have always been amazing quality.

And it can be worn everyday without too much worry

stevalnamechanger · 01/01/2022 18:51

I'd go to London Diamonds and see what they can do !

Likely - necklace , tennis bracelets , ring :)

Isabelle70 · 01/01/2022 18:58

I would go for diamond studs. I brought these in the summer 0.4ct each in white gold and cost £1800

time2tork · 01/01/2022 19:23

Sorry for my little collection. The top Two (on a diagonal) are my Studs. 2 Carats each in platinum.
All Moissanite stones.

They are so identical to a diamond in the way they look and made that they actually show up as Diamonds on a diamond tester 😂

They are not fakes, Moissanite is it's own gemstone! And like most ethical Diamonds they are lab grown.

Magicalmattressesinthesnow · 01/01/2022 19:28

A nice acrylic brooch from a French lassie that designs and makes them , something in silver for my daughter and a gold chain for me and I would spend the rest on anything but jewellery. Like a wee long weekend for my family . No point wearing expensive as it would get knocked where i live and I can't where it to work

Deux · 01/01/2022 19:39

I think it’d be lovely to have something that you can use and wear everyday. Diamond earrings, diamond necklace, tennis bracelet, watch or combination.

If you look at the CoolDiamonds website you can play around with carat size/clarity/colour to get an idea of cost. www.cooldiamonds.co.uk/earrings-mobile-shop

I’d go for diamonds over moissanite OP if you’re looking to retain/increase value and make sure the diamonds are certified.

Also as per the PP mentioned the squeeze-butterfly backs are really secure.

chocolover88 · 01/01/2022 19:46

Buy something in gold (22k) so that it retains its value if you were to ever sell it in the future.

I could easily spend a lot more than £2K on jewellery 😂

OP my vote would be a for a classic diamond solitaire pendent. Looks beautiful for daytime or evening.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/01/2022 20:19

Great pair of diamond studs. They’ll light your face up, day to evening, and you can afford a quite big deep cut pair which will really sparkle.

UsernameInTheTown · 01/01/2022 20:35

@Mumdiva99 Mine are superglued in.
