FairyTaleOfNewYork · 21/12/2007 16:52

am i missing something here?

why do people like their hair poker straight now?

are they just for the curly haired ladies/men? or could my hair benefit from being straightened??

I do mine when I go out because of the kinks in my hair.
You've seen my hair . It twists in all directions.
It looks better after I've done it!

DogMa · 21/12/2007 16:57

When you have hair like wire wool (as I do) and someone invents a way of straightening it and making it shine, using 180 degrees of white heat - YA GET THE POINT OF THEM!

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 21/12/2007 16:59

so PE, do u think i could do with a set?

OP posts:
FairyTaleOfNewYork · 21/12/2007 17:00

dogma, dont they eventually dry your hair out?

OP posts:
SleighlyMadSanta · 21/12/2007 17:01

I didn't get the point until 6m ago. I get the point now .

THe bottom layers of my hair are really curly
The top layers are nearly straight. Looks silly without a lot of effort.

Curling is an option but is PITA
Blow drying works but means an hours commitment to wash and dry at consecutatively
Straightners are great - I can let me hair dry naturally and shower when I have time and straighten when I have time. It doesn't have to be done at the same time .

SleighlyMadSanta · 21/12/2007 17:02

I only ue mine about once a week when I want tio straighten. Not drying out so far.

PersonalChristmasElf · 21/12/2007 17:03

If I get that Beliss hair dryer/straightner thing, you could have my ones.
I just find it a faff to dry my hair then straighten it.
I really want the wet2straght ones but can't justify £60 odd for them.

DogMa · 21/12/2007 17:04

Yep. Split ends galore, so use sparingly but rejoice, REJOICE I tell you, when, after years of hair misery and base ball caps, you've finally found a miracle product that allows you to step out of the house with pride and confidence!

Some good product around now which you can spray on to protect against drying out as well

MamaG · 21/12/2007 17:04

My hair isn't curly or even wavy, it just has a birrova kink to it.

I use straighteners every day, unless I'm having it up, it makes it glossy and looks like i've just been to the hairdressers - really. I'd recommend you try a mate's GHDs and you'll be hooked.

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 21/12/2007 17:06

atm, i am slowly growing my hair out to an acceptable length. and its hidden under my hat. lol.

maybe i nthe summmer i will try a set.

FlossALumpOfPud · 21/12/2007 17:20

I want some. I have a really old crappy pair. Am wondering if the ghd's are really worth it or if a 30/40 quid pair would fit the bill. DP telling me not to go and buy any...

MamaG · 21/12/2007 17:32

I had SAKS straighteners, cost £80 so not cheap and I thought they were fine...until I used a mates GHDs

They are fantastic. So quick to heat/cool and easy to use. Never got teh same results with any others

spokette · 21/12/2007 17:46

I'm currently looking at these but the price tag is forcing to undertake due diligence to ensure that they will actually work on my hair (afro-caribbean) without damaging it.

If anyone has got one of these, would be grateful for some feedback.

TIA

lizandlulu · 21/12/2007 18:25

i recently got a pair of babyliss pro230's after someone on here reccomended them. i have only used them twice, on nights out, but the difference is amazing, really, im not exaggerating!!
people look at you and just go, your hair looks really good.
i now think i look really wild with my hair donw, as before i thought i looked ok.
dont know if they still are, but were half price in argos. (29.99)

SleighlyMadSanta · 21/12/2007 18:44

Twas me that recommended Babyliss Pro230.

I chose them as I could not justify £100 for ghds as a Straightening virgin.

The reviews were fantastic on reviewcentre, ciao etc. and many people that had ghds and Babyliss rated them equally in performance, but preferred the robustness of hte Babyliss. When I saw them at £25 a set I snapped them up and havn't looked back. I believe they are still in the £30-40 bracket at Boots, Argos & Amazon. The rrp is £60.

lizandlulu · 21/12/2007 19:10

mine do my hair great. the only thing that anoys me with them is that the on/off button is exactly where you hold them, so i keep turning them off while doing your hair
my mate did it the first time and she got about half way through and said, 'these arn't very hot you know' well they wont be if she turned them off!!

SleighlyMadSanta · 22/12/2007 10:17

That was a critcism...I have only done it a couple of times mind - but I tend to end up holding mine upside down somehow - so thats perhaps why I don't do it often.

On the plus they heat up v quickly so quick to recover the temp if you do do it.

CarGirl · 22/12/2007 10:23

I use them as I have lots and lots of thick hair, it calms my hair down takes out the slight waves/kinks and it looks so much better - eve dh can tell the difference

I've upgraded from ceramic £25 straighteners to babyliss 230 and they are so much better. They retail at £40 most places now got mine in Debenhams for £32 as they had a one day offer absolutely fab.

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 22/12/2007 10:26

I've got those Spokette and I love them! They were a present though...

I have fuzzy/curly-ish long and thick hair but I can go from curly to sleek and shiny in about 20 minutes

Only use them once a week or so but the hype about the ghd's is definitely merited! Different class.

Also, I don't do poker straight hair - too much for me - I use my ghd's to create what I call 'glamourbounce'

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 23/12/2007 17:50

well i found a set in my cupboard (i think they are lisad123's old ones, i certainly didnt buy them), and used them today before the sun newspaper came round to do pictures.

my hair does look better, i think i will be asking for a good set for my birthday in april.

thanks for all your input.

whats a good price? and ones to buy/avoid then?

hedgehog1979 · 23/12/2007 18:10

I love having my hair straightened and have been nagging my sis who is a hairdresser for the best ones to buy.
Her first point was do not get the wet to straight ones as they will ruin your hair.
If you spend on the GHD's you can also use them to create waves as the outsides heat up too. Don't think all do this.
Some of them have an automatic cut off so you cannot accidentally leave them on.
If you want to protect your hair when you are straightening there are loads of protection sprays out there by Tresemme (?), Bed Head and do work and are worth paying for if you straighten your hair everyday.
Hope this helps

TinyTimsGangGawdBlessUs1andAll · 23/12/2007 18:32

My hair is dead straight anyway and I could never see the point in them for me. I didn't get it at all for someone like me with straight hair anyway.

But, I did buy some ghd's and they do give a lovely look. Very polished and smooth and, oh, I can't really explain but the result is more styled and looks much better than without.

I don't use them every day though because I do worry they might dry my hair.

Haylstones · 23/12/2007 18:45

My hair is somewhere in between wavy and straight and I have a fringe just below my eyebrows that kinks out really badly if I don't straighten it (dh likens it to Hugh Grant). I wash it every 2 days and straighten it every time, although if I'm tying it back I don't bother with the back and sides. I like it really really straight but don't often have the time/patiend to do it! It isn't any drier and I have no split ends but I get it cut regularly and condition it really well. Definitely worth it! I've got the Hair Tools ones but agree re GHDs

ChubbyShcotsBurd · 23/12/2007 18:49

OMG you need GHDs, they are lifechanging.

ive had so many hair straighteners over the last few years and bought ghd straighteners last xmas and it is one of the best purchses ive made, cant live without them!!

ive used remington and babyliss straighteners before and after a while they stop straightening properly whereas after a year my ghds straighten my hair perfectly still.
