Trainers that are wider across ball of foot - recommendations please!

Please recommend me a brand of trainer for everyday wear such as school run and shops, that is wider across the ball of the foot. Not getting on with converse or Adidas, they seem to be too straight. I often don't realise until I've actually worn them out, and can't afford to keep making mistakes.

My sister has wide feet and swears by Vans.

wonderspread · 29/12/2021 17:15

Running shoes usually have wider toe boxes, I find New Balance and Asics are particularly good for this. Ecco also, more in terms of trainers that are wider and not just as running shoes. I’ve heard Skechers can be good for width and comfort in general although haven’t tried them myself.

SpanielsAreMyLife · 29/12/2021 17:22

I've got boat like feet, and have got a pair of wide fit New Balance that are amazingly comfy. And Skechers are very very wide .... so much so that I need their regular and not wide feet.

Indecisivelurcher · 29/12/2021 17:28

Thanks for giving me of the right term, toe box!!!

I have had sketchers before that were good. I tried some on today and they seemed similar issue to my Adidas fails, I think maybe it's the old school style I can't get on with, they are too straight. A more sports brand style might be the thing then. It's no good me liking the look of something if I can't walk the 900 steps to school without starting to hobble. Am falling apart...

I have the same issue, can’t do the straight/low profile styles. I have learned to love the more athletic/running style and am now quite partial to a chunky trainer!

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 29/12/2021 17:40

With similar foot shape, I tend to gravitate towards Asics.

itwasntaparty · 29/12/2021 17:41

Nike air max

rubyslippers · 29/12/2021 17:42

Deffo new balance - I have wide feet
Skechers too

PurpleDaisies · 29/12/2021 17:42

I’ve worn ASICS for running for years. They’re amazingly comfortable. If you’re looking for a sporty style of trainer, definitely try those. I’ve also got some Nike Pegasus trail 3 that is recommend for comfort.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 29/12/2021 17:43

I wear brooks, vans and sometimes new balance.

lebkuchenforxmas · 29/12/2021 17:46

Depending on the length of your feet, have you tried men's trainers? They're often a bit wider. I have no idea if men's feet are actually wider or if the manufacturers just presume this. They don't seem to have reached the same conclusion or made the same presumption about shorter length trainers aimed at boys. Of course, this does mean that you can only buy navy, grey or black as god forbid a man might want to wear another colour. It does, however, save you from being forced to buy something sparkly or pastel coloured.

Pucarbuile · 29/12/2021 17:54

For me it's Brooks. I think they have an option to return after wearing if you don't get on with them.

Silverjellybean71 · 29/12/2021 17:57

Hoka trainers have a wider toe box and they also do a wide fitting. Lots of the running websites let you wear them for 30 days and return if not suitable

LtGreggs · 29/12/2021 17:58

Asics are good. Definitely try mens trainers if you are roughly size 6+ (they usually don't make them below that).

You can also try 'barefoot' shoes. I have vivo barefoot, am about to try some Merrell gloves. They are intended to be a more natural and flexible fit, and all have wider toe boxes. Great for strengthening your feet, but build up over time.

Also try hotter for wide fit shoes (but choose the style carefully - can be somewhat dowdy).

Indecisivelurcher · 29/12/2021 18:05

I wear Brooks for running. They're great. I wouldn't normally wear sports style trainers for every day, but sounding like I need to think about that.

I used to wear 6eee fit boots from Evans but I've discovered that Vans fit me perfectly. I buy their Old Skool in a 5.5

They are beyond comfy. I've now got 4 pairs!

Wombat43 · 29/12/2021 18:08

Altras & Merrell

Burnamer · 29/12/2021 18:08

Brooks are known for their wide fit.

Burnamer · 29/12/2021 18:09

Sorry OP, cross post

StarStarTeachMe · 29/12/2021 18:09

I wear Vans or Supergas... am really wide at that part of my foot and find them good.

PermanentTemporary · 29/12/2021 18:10

I have had bad experiences in the past with Saucony and mens trainers, but I now have a pair of Saucony men's trainers that are completely awesome, they are the only pair of trainers I've had that never feel too tight round the toe box. I got fitted at a running shop.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/12/2021 18:12

"Barefoot" shoes are usually pretty wide - see Happy Little Soles for a selection

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 29/12/2021 19:00

I have 2 pairs of Brooks that I alternate.
Cascadias and (the other kind).
They're comfy so I don't feel like I should restrict myself to just wearing them for running.
They do come in some shocking colours though.

I wear Blundstones when I need something leather, and Vans for when I want to be a bit more dressed up looking.

I am so far removed from anyone who wears high heels, honestly.
As well as wide feet, my skin rubs easily so leather shoes don't work that well usually.

Indecisivelurcher · 29/12/2021 19:02

Yes I can't imagine ever wearing heels!

Saucony Saucony Saucony, best brand ever for wide feet. I have bunions and their wide toe box is brilliant.

I've tried NB, ASICS, used to love Nike. But I think my bunion has outgrown them.

Every decent pair I've had in the last 10 years has been Saucony.
