Dyson air wrap v hairdryer

I hinted to hubby I wanted the air wrap. He got me the hairdryer by accident. My hair is just past my shoulders, I have lots of hair but it's thin. I don't normally have the confidence fo curl my hair but I wondered if the air wrap would curl under/crests bounce at the bottom as i fee like my hair looks witchy as I get older with it being dark and straight.

Would I benefit from swapping the hair dryer for the wrap or should I stick with the hair dryer and use straighteners. I feel I don't have confidence to curl my hair, not even sure it suits me but only really used straighteners. I like the idea of the bounce the wrap gives but I feel I may feel Unconfident with curls. I just really want to try it.

The hairdryer seems very expensive but then I feel the wrap attachments may not get used much as it looks fussy and I'm a little busy working mum who might just end up using my cheaper hairdryer and straighteners.

If you want the bouncy blown curled look, you need the air wrap. You can achieve the same look with the dryer but only if you’re decent at blow dries already and have a good amount of time, which it doesn’t sound like you do.

Even if you don’t want full on curls you can get a nice style with the air wrap

foreverandalways · 26/12/2021 00:58

I was lucky enough to have an air wrap for my birthday last month and have shoulder length thin hair and it's amazing...

violetbunny · 26/12/2021 03:11

I love the hair dryer, but for me the main benefit is that it doesn't get as hot. I have very thick, long coarse hair which holds a lot of water when wet so when I dry my hair (especially in summer) normally I practically need another shower by the time I'm done! I suspect you'd be better off with the Airwrap based on your description of your hair.

carrottopper · 26/12/2021 08:43

I was thinking the hair dryer may be more powerful than the one in the air wrap and get my hair in better condition. Is there another way to get the same sort of bouncy finish? The air wrap is so expensive and I've read such a wide range of reviews

I got the air wrap and returned it before the 30 days

Yeah it made my hair curl but no matter what I did nothing would make the curls stay and the whole lot would drop within a hour

I joined a group on Facebook with hints and tips and tried ever product going they suggested

Nope waste of time and it took ages to do my whole head and it would be gone as quick

Total waste of money for me so I returned as for that price I expected something amazing

I have shoulder length fine hair

carrottopper · 26/12/2021 08:54

Also I keep reading about how people buy the longer barrels! Surely for the price it should be fit for purpose? My hair is tot eh bra strap fastening length.

@Indoctro where did you buy from to be able to try it and return it?

Nanasueathome · 26/12/2021 09:08

QVC do the 30 day back guarantee
They do usually stock the air wrap, often on 3 or 4 months easy pay too
I’ve just checked their website and it’s not available at the moment but it’s worth keeping a lookout on there

Just can't decide what to do. I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things but I don't want to wish I'd tried the air wrap. I also don't think I would curl it much either. The aim is for healthy bouncy hair with a bit of curl at the bottom. Could I create this with the hairdryer?

You CAN but you’ll need to be able to do a decent blow dry in order to do it. So if you can do that, you’ll be fine. But if you can’t do that currently, the hairdryer won’t magically do it - that’s why people rate the air wrap because it does the hard work of a blow dry for them.
carrottopper · 26/12/2021 12:11

Thank you. I have two little ones. I am wanting a glamorous look to the bottom of my thin hair if that makes sense. I just don't know if I have the time to do it with kids. Would the hair dryer and a straightener to the bottom ends work better for me time wise or would I not get the same effect? I'm not a volume hair person but wanting a bit more glamour to my straight ends. Hope that makes sense 💗

I have what sounds like the same style of hair as you. My hair is fine and cannot hold the style the air wrap created, no matter what I did. I had bought it direct from dyson. I also have the hairdryer which is amazing!

I returned and bought the revlon salon one step brush. It dries my hair and leaves it with so much bounce that it looks like I've had a professional blow dry. I made sure to buy the smaller barrel brush as my hair just sits at the top of my bra strap too.

SometimesRavenSometimesParrot · 26/12/2021 13:42

You can definitely add movement to the ends of your hair with a straightener, ghds are very good for this but again it’s something you need to practice although really easy once you’ve got the hang of it

Indoctro · 26/12/2021 15:47

If you buy direct from dyson you can return within 30 days I did this as I know it's a hit or miss with peoples hair types and at that cost I didn't want to be stuck with something that was useless

I made sure in that time I used it loads to get the hang of it properly etc.

Indoctro · 26/12/2021 15:48

I also bought the 20mm barrels in hope that would help

But no it still fell out within 1 hours Sad

carrottopper · 26/12/2021 16:31

@ReginaaPhalange you have the air wrap and the hair dryer? How much would I miss out on if I didn't keep the hairdryer and just got the air wrap? Especially as I would dry my hair and my two girls 4-5 times a week.

OP posts:
ReginaaPhalange · 26/12/2021 16:37

@carrottopper I love my hairdryer! It's a game changer as it literally takes me 3-4 minutes to dry my fine hair. It's also more powerful than the drying attachment on the air wrap.

The air wrap was a waste of money for me as I have fine hair. Styles just fell out.

MidnightMeltdown · 26/12/2021 16:46

I have an air wrap and love it! Bought the version with longer barrels as my hair is quite long and thick. My hair is naturally quite curly/wavy. I don't have a problem with curls staying in as my hair wants to curl. It just looks a lot better when done with the air wrap than it would naturally. I imagine that people who have naturally very straight hair may have a problem getting it to stay in though.

Also use the straightening brush regularly when I want straight hair. It doesn't make it polka straight like hair straighteners would, but I prefer the softer look anyway, and it's much quicker and easier than having to dry and then straighten.

carrottopper · 26/12/2021 16:49

Yes I'm after the softer look. My hair is white wavy and curly. The ends look too sharp though

Deux · 26/12/2021 16:53

I have just past shoulder length poker straight fine hair but lots of it. I have the airwrap and love it. It’s really good for someone who’s rubbish at blow drying imo. I like the hairdryer on it and it just takes a few minutes to dry my hair.

If you buy from Dyson you can customise the attachments to suit your hair type.

carrottopper · 26/12/2021 18:10

@Deux thanks. If I only want the ends curled, is that possible? I'm not sure how I would dry it straight at the top but curl the ends. Everyone seems to take the curl one the the scalp almost as it has to be 70 or80% damp doesn't it?

OP posts:
Deux · 26/12/2021 20:11

@carrottopper yes you could definitely just curl the ends as you can control how much hair is wrapped around the barrel and the ends get wrapped first.

I don’t use any setting spray on mine. If I want to do a quick style I don’t lift segments of hair up, I just aim the barrel at the ends of my hair. I section off from temple to crown and do the underneath first. I don’t want a really curled look and yes it does drop out but not so that my hair is totally straight at the end of the day.

If I want to keep it curlier, hairspray works. Have a look at tutorials on YouTube and you might find someone with your hair type.

If you order from Dyson and it’s out of stock, it’s worth filling in the email-me-when-back in stock form. I did that and was emailed after about a week.

I really like mine and it suits me as I don’t want to spend ages blow drying and I’m really rubbish at trying to create a salon blow dry at home.

Thinkbiglittleone · 26/12/2021 20:21

I love my Dyson airwrap.
I first bought the Dyson hairdryer, then the Airwrap, so the Dyson hairdryer is pretty redundant now. I've just got the straighteners but will hold review until I use them more.

If I had the choice between the hairdryer or Airwrap,it would be the Airwrap hands down

dontgobaconmyheart · 26/12/2021 23:45

I've had both and don't really rate either, both were sold on. I get better results rough drying my hair upside down with my usual hairdryer and putting a loose curl in the lengths only using my GHD's. A doddle and I can do my very long hair with the straighteners in about 10 mins, it looks like a bouncy blowdry once a brush is run through the curls.

If you arent sure and money is an issue then return it OP, you can always think it over or try a much cheaper hot brush to see how you get on, with less pressure.

carrottopper · 26/12/2021 23:52

@dontgobaconmyheart any tips for curling with a ghd? I have ghds. The hair dryer is a luxury and I'm worried I wouldn't make use of the air wrap
