I mean if it is obtainable from an olive there's no need to squeeze it out of dead shark.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/12/2021 10:37

I think the ordinary use sugar beets?

LaBellina · 27/12/2021 11:17

I think it’s mainly companies from Asia that would use this.
Here’s an article
axiologybeauty.com/blogs/our-blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-one-of-the-cosmetic-industrys-deadliest-ingredients-squalene

LaBellina · 27/12/2021 11:23

Jojoba oil is also very similar to the oils our own skin produces and doesn’t clog pores so a good alternative for squalene if you’re not sure if it’s vegan. Horse oil is great too, a very popular skincare ingredient in East Asia, it actually has been for centuries. Yes, this is literally fat derived from dead horses. But, unlike the sharks, the horses are not specifically killed for their fat but their meat is eaten as a delicacy and they’re killed just for that. The fat is just a byproduct that is used for cosmetic purposes after treating it to make it smell free etc and would otherwise probably be thrown away. At least, this is when you buy the Japanese horse oil and horse oil creams, not sure about the Korean ones.

SpiderFluff · 27/12/2021 11:37

Horse oil?! Are they particularly oily?

LaBellina · 27/12/2021 11:49

They do have some fat and that is used for cosmetic purposes. It’s quite popular as anti wrinkle cream and as a treatment for eczema.

I bet you have heard of snail mucus as a cosmetic ingredient! Another K beauty favorite that did make it in other parts of the world. Can’t see that happening to horse oil although the snail mucus production is usually very cruel.

WildFlowerBees · 27/12/2021 12:23

Have a look at this website, add your skincare and it'll tell you what ingredients and what they do. Then you can hunt down similar for a better price

@Fluffycloudland77 - South Korea in 2015 South Korea mandated that all animal testing for cosmetic products would be banned by 2018. This was such a popular decision with the general public (83% vote) that the law was passed early! As with European and American companies, products that sell in China must be tested on animals (in China). A lot of companies have China-specific lines so that they can meet the claim that they are 100% cruelty-free, and that flies under the radar. Japan certainly hasn’t done anything with it’s animal testing laws though. (In fact it is compulsory for pseudo “medical” ingredients like lightening or brightening products, and sunscreens.) I know that there are some products out there with horse and even donkey oil. I wouldn’t go there. The products I suggest all state that their squalene is vegetal-sourced. (Mostly olive - it’s a butt-load cheaper to produce than squalane and is a cleaner product to formate with, as well.) I don’t ever buy anything that hides it’s sources.

@Justilou1 I just treated myself to that dynasty cream! Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge on the thread

Good for you! Enjoy!!! (Just remember it can take a few weeks to arrive from S. Korea.)

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/12/2021 16:55

I’ve looked at some Korean products in the past that haven’t passed my googling so I haven’t bought them. I wouldn’t touch snail mucas either. I want to look nice but not at the expense of an animal.

I’m glad their cruelty free now, there’s no need for animal testing.

Justilou1 · 28/12/2021 00:09

I fully agree re animal testing. While I can’t quite bring myself to try it because garden pest snot on my face is remarkably unappealing, snail mucin is produced by very well-fed snail zooming around on a mesh screen to catch the goop before they are put back in their little snail houses to eat again. I don’t think it’s especially cruel. No birds. No pesticides. No people with gumboots. Still not sure o need that product in my life though.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 03/01/2022 01:21

Well if you’ve used products from Margaret Dabbs (usually foot products) her products contain emu oil from yes you guessed it Emus!! 🤢

JustLikea · 03/01/2022 04:41

I tried some Chanel sublimage but I wasn't overly wowed tbh

Deathraystare · 03/01/2022 08:24

@BusterGonad

So how did you avoid the "Can I help you" brigade? They are all over me unless I actually want to buy anything, then they are nowhere to be found.

Laiste · 03/01/2022 20:08

As a result of this thread i went and bought some Lacura Caviar cream from Aldi last week and i really like it!

It doesn't seem highly perfumed - depends what you're used to i guess. If anything there is a slight menthol/peppermint smell which is quite refreshing in the morning. It's a thickish white cream. Reminds me of Astral or the old nivea in the jar.

I like it. It's good under make up. If feels rich when you put it on but sinks in totally.

And yes, it's £303 cheaper than Chanel sublimage Grin
