Shampoo for greasy roots teenage hair

fesrivesprinkles · 23/12/2021 22:32

Teen dd doesn't like to wash her hair too often but just lately it's been getting greasy at the roots within a day. I've told her to shampoo the roots most and then only apply conditioner from her ears down. Any suggestions please? As natural as possible as she's very into that.

Body shop ginger shampoo is amazing.

Also, washing the roots more will trigger more oil. It’s hard to start with but the longer you leave between washes the less oil it will trigger.

Doidontimmm · 23/12/2021 22:39

My 17 year old uses faith in nature for greasy hair, very good & lasts ages. You can get it from Amazon or Holland & Barrett.

Northernsoullover · 23/12/2021 22:43

As a nearly 50 year old with greasy hair the only thing that works for me is Batiste dry shampoo. I can go every other day with washing when I use it. I only mentioned my age because I really have tried everything, less washing, no conditioning, special shampoos..Batiste has been a game changer.

This is absolute baloney.

A less harsh shampoo. Second the faith in nature. DD was using "strong" shampoos but this did not seem to help her greasy-within-12-hours teen hair. She switched to Faith in Nature which is more natural/less stripping (think it is sulphate free). Less stripping of oils = less over-production of oils.

Aveda Rosemary mint.

MoltonSilver · 24/12/2021 10:01

After trying just about everything else, Johnson's baby shampoo turned out to be the best thing for dss greasy roots.

Theunamedcat · 24/12/2021 10:05

Apple cider vinegar shampoo is fantastic for this

onepieceoflollipop · 24/12/2021 10:13

Normal Pantene or as suggested above faith in nature (lemon)
Also shampoo twice, the second time focused on the roots and round the ears/haIrline.

Like a pp I am 50 ish and have greasy hair and have tried many strategies.

If washing in the morning maybe try a good spritz of batiste before bed, this may mean your dd can go an extra day without washing.

The whole ‘training’ or leaving hair for days makes no sense so it will learn not to get so greasy? People with greasy hair/scalps usually have greasy skin for example on face and back. Do we try and avoid washing those daily as well? (What about those with sweaty armpits, should they try to avoid washing for a day or two and train that part of their body too?)

Greasy hair (mine anyway) is porous and picks up cooking smells very easily so leaving it for a few days isn’t ideal for me.

It seems so old fashioned now to mess around feeling uncomfortable just to avoid washing hair every day or so if it needs it. If I try and leave mine for a day or two I am very aware of it, for the sake of 2 minutes extra in the shower I’d rather just wash it.

onepieceoflollipop · 24/12/2021 10:15

(meant to add - I am fairly sure the skin on your scalp is the same as the skin elsewhere on your body, that’s why I can’t understand the angst for some people re regular hair washing if you are prone to oiliness)

FenceSplinters · 24/12/2021 10:17

L’Oréal Elvive do a great shampoo, with clay in it. It’s for greasy roots and dry ends, and it is the only thing that works for my teen’s long hair. It’s in a blue bottle.

Missingjigsawpuzzle · 24/12/2021 10:18

Thanks for posting this as my daughter is the same and I have spent a small fortune on different shampoos with no success.

At least now I can focus the search!

MumUndone · 24/12/2021 10:31

I don't think anything can control or reduce oil production (other than taking roaccutane) so nothing you can do will actually make the hair last longer without getting greasy, dry shampoo will disguise the greasiness.

stevalnamechanger · 24/12/2021 10:40

There is another recent thread on this !

StormBaby · 24/12/2021 10:45

If you apply coconut oil and leave overnight(it will get everywhere so sleep on a towel) then wash in the morning, hair no longer gets greasy. It will need a couple of good shampoos to get out. It nourishes the scalp so it doesn’t overproduce oil for a while afterwards.

SomethingSuss · 24/12/2021 10:49

We tried loads for DD and were pleasantly surprised that L'Oréal Elvive Extraordinary Clay works a a treat. I had tried the expensive specialist ones and yes they worked but DD's hair is down to her thighs so it was quite pricy with how much she went through. L'Oréal is often on offer for the 500ml bottles.

Please stop writing this on greasy hair threads. Anyone.

Dd1 has to wash her hair daily it's just how it is. We use head and shoulders

Yep same here for teenage ds.
Tippexy · 24/12/2021 13:32

Exactly @pastypirate, it's so annoying.

Scalps that get greasy quickly are usually caused by hormone levels and/or a thyroid that's overactive or getting there. No amount of not showering can change those things!

Drives me up the wall!! I'm 42 I have greasy hair I'd know by now if the not washing technique has any merit!!

Meanwhile it's really blamey the way it's said 'you've caused your hair to become greasy by washing it too much silly thing' F off.

It's also the kind of bs advice we got from our parents in the 80's.

Agree! It makes me laugh when people think that you can train your hair GrinConfused Hormones decide how greasy or dry your hair is not how often you wash it. Ive always had greasy hair and skin and the menopause has normalised it . Teenagers are in a state of hormonal flux, the last thing they need is to avoid washing!
Cheerbear24 · 24/12/2021 16:35

Elvive blue clay shampoo or good old vosene are good. DD12 has just had to accept she needs to wash her hair every other day, otherwise it’s just too oily.

Marble2021 · 24/12/2021 18:42

I have always used wash and go shampoo. works great on my hair and super cheap too

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/12/2021 18:46

Head and shoulders is the best cure for greasy teenage hair.
