If you're in your 60s or 70s and still look good, what advice would you give younger women?

Do you have one tip or product you would recommend?

I always ask this to any of my elderly patients that look amazing.

Most say they used Nivea all their lives and one said they used Vaseline

Sunscreen

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2021 16:55

I'm late 50s so not quite in your target age group but close to it:

Don't smoke
Drink loads of water
Minimal alcohol
Sunscreen
Look after your teeth

Oh, and you need fewer calories than you'd think post menopause but it's actually beneficial to carry a little bit of extra weight as it protects your bones.

Mine is firstly that invisibility is real - at least in my experience - and that younger women ignore you just as much as men. It can come as a shock but it can be liberating too. I'm a much more adventurous dresser now because I care less and less about making mistakes, and I focus on what I enjoy, which is clothes over skincare and grooming.

Body over face. Partly because I'm hoping for a long and active old age and partly because - well see my first point. I really like a lot of my clothes and I want to fit into for them for as long as I can.

But that's my priority and yours may be different. If you want advice on how to maintain a dewy skin then I'm not the poster for you.

Floisme · 18/12/2021 18:13

I guess that post wasn't really advice was it? More me thinking out loud. Ok, my best advice is, don't be afraid to change, whether that's your lifestyle or your wardrobe or your opinions. Change or die!

A lot of it is good genes. My sister is late 60s looks great. She smokes. My late mother still looked great in her 80s.

Moisturiser and sunscreen

helpfulperson · 18/12/2021 18:24

Stop worrying about other people's opinions on how you look

hoxt · 18/12/2021 19:02

Don’t drink, don’t smoke, regular gentle exercise. Get outside as much as possible. But most of it is genes!!! (Full disclosure, I am 46).

hoxt · 18/12/2021 19:03

Make sure you don’t eat too many calories too, and that those you do are the most nutritious possible. Lots of veg!

Soontobe60 · 18/12/2021 19:05

Sunscreen
Don’t smoke
Embrace your wrinkles

ancientgran · 18/12/2021 19:07

Protect your skin from the sun, either stay out of it or use sunscreen/face cream with spf 20 every day not just when it is really hot. I always felt unlucky with my pale red head's complexion but I'm feeling the benefit now.

Giggorata · 18/12/2021 19:38

Repeating everyone else’s:
Moisturise, starting as early as possible.
Drink a silly amount of water
The sun is not your friend
Don’t smoke and only drink in moderation
Eat well, lots of veg and some fats.
Gentle exercise, including daily stretching
Get enough sleep

Yep, it’s basically genes isn’t it?

Other than staying out of the sun mostly and not smoking.

I'm with helpfulperson. Get a life, and stop giving a shit about superficial crap like your looks! You will age, and die, whether you like it or not. What matters is your brain and soul, and the contribution you make to the world. God doesn't give a toss what you look like. He isn't going to judge you on how much Nivea you plastered on your face!

LookslovelyinSpringtime · 18/12/2021 20:36

Water, exercise, minimal alcohol. Cut out sugar and processed food and wear sunscreen.

IamGusFring · 18/12/2021 21:11

You asked for one tip - don't drink masses of alcohol /smoke ( that's 2 really)

thenightsky · 18/12/2021 21:21

Yes, this. Keep your weight within a tight range, whereby you can look good in 95% of your wardrobe.

I'd add - do Pilates and keep a good posture and core strength. Its aging to look hunched and bent.

I would advocate the opposite . See so many women who have great bodies but their face looks shit .
karalime · 18/12/2021 21:27

Looking at my aunt who is nearly 80 and looks 15 years younger, don't have kids.

My own mum said similar!

liverpoolgal82 · 18/12/2021 21:39

Less calories , walking lots and gentle gym weight exercise to keep muscles firm.
A very good facial oil for bedtime and a nourishing cream for day time.

liverpoolgal82 · 18/12/2021 21:40

Oh and not too much alcoholic. Drink lots of water. Swim regularly.

MsGrumpytrousers · 18/12/2021 22:57

Always wear comfortable shoes. Buy clothes in the size you are now or a bit bigger. Don't read any magazines that are designed to make you feel bad about yourself In order to sell you stuff. Don't listen to anyone pontificating about what older women are supposed to do. If you're feeling a bit grubby or scruffy, ask yourself "Would this be okay if I was a bloke?" The answer is usually "Yes".
