If your facial moisturiser doesn't have an SPF?

Shufflebumnessie · 05/12/2021 21:25

I'm about to try a new facial moisturiser but realised it doesn't have an SPF. Those of you who use a moisturiser without SPF, do you just apply a facial suncream under your moisturiser or is there something else I should be considering? Thanks

SPF over your moisturiser.
Even if the moisturiser contains sunscreen.
TBH with the right sunscreen you don't need moisturiser.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 05/12/2021 21:36

No I think daily spf is the emperors new clothes tbh. It’s kinda drying and leaves a layer that doesn’t sit well with makeup. Plus it really stings my eyes if you rub your face accidentally. Obviously I wear proper sunscreen in the actual sun.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/12/2021 21:38

I use child’s F50 suncream which isn’t oily and is extra sensitive so doesn’t sting, plus loads cheaper than facial moisturiser with SPF

no need for extra moisturiser

GoodnightGrandma · 05/12/2021 21:40

I don’t use SPF, unless I’m abroad, as it gives me spots.
I just stay out of the sun.

MeltedButter · 05/12/2021 21:43

I live in the UK I think SPF in foundation is totally unnecessary. Most people here will struggle to get enough vitamin D, never mind get sunburnt.

triflinpud · 05/12/2021 21:47

Altruist Facial Fluid (SPF 50) is great. Works well on its own although I use it with a light moisturiser (Amil C Whip from Facetheory) as it gives me better results over the course of the day for both hydration and oil control. However I use SPF because I get hyperpigmentation so it feels important to me regardless of the weather!

I think if you want SPF, a dedicated product is better than a combo like with moisturiser or make up as then you can usually find out the PPF/Boots star rating etc according to what you need.

Amberflames · 05/12/2021 21:47

Yep as others have said, I don’t bother day to day. If I’m going to be outside a lot on a sunny day I’ll use a facial sunscreen instead.

GoodnightGrandma · 05/12/2021 21:49

I used to use an Oil of Ulay moisturiser with SPF, but they stopped producing it.

Covetthee · 05/12/2021 21:54

spf is definitely needed everyday, even if it isn’t sunny, your skin will thank you later on.

I love the corsx or hello farmer ones, both quite moisturising and Leave no whiteness.

Cheerfulcharlie · 05/12/2021 21:57

I use one with an sPf in summer and one without in winter to max the vitamin D

MrsPleasant · 05/12/2021 21:59

I choose not to use SPF in addition to moisturizer. For my skin, I don't get sufficient sun normally, so don't want to limit what I do get.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/12/2021 08:30

I eschew the moisturiser and just use spf 50 all year around.

Trying to get sufficient vit d in this hemispheres pretty pointless anyway. You’ll run low oct-March anyway if you don’t supplement.

NMC2022 · 06/12/2021 08:33

I use SPF daily on my face. Yes I'm vitamin d deficient but I can't expose myself enough to get it as I burn v v quickly and winter is useless for vitamin d anyway
I just take a vitamin d supplement

ILoveShula · 06/12/2021 09:37

I use moisturiser then a sunscreen

SocksAndTheCity · 06/12/2021 11:37

I don't use it either - I'm indoors most of the time anyway and really don't need it. I don't actually know whether my moisturiser has an SPF, since I'm usually juggling three or so at a time out of my stash Smile

PumpkinSpiceGirl · 06/12/2021 11:58

All those who don't use a sunscreen do you never use any kind of peeling/acid/retinol type products? I do and am too scared to go out without SPF in case my face melts or something 😂

CointreauVersial · 06/12/2021 17:22

La Roche Posay does a great spf liquid that doesn't sting or leave your face greasy - sinks straight in. Use it over moisturiser.

Daisy62 · 06/12/2021 17:42

Only use separate SPF in the summer/sunny days or if using retinol. Recently have been using Bioré's UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen on top of moisturiser - it's thin and doesn't leave any stickiness.

I’ll be one of the peelywallees who burns in the uk Grin I use a clarins spf 50 over my moisturiser in all but winter. I get melasma too and the tiniest bit of spring sunshine sets it off.
NMC2022 · 06/12/2021 19:06

@SockFluffInTheBath Grin
I snorted at struggle to get burnt. I manage to get burnt at 10.30am here yet still deficient in vitamin d (it's because I work in a building from 8-6 and don't see daylight a lot!)
I can spend around 10 mins outside without SPF in summer or I start burning pale blue

Stylewannabee · 06/12/2021 19:26

Number one cause of skin aging is sun exposure . Even if you don’t sunbathe . Definitely use an spf if you can remember .

SocksAndTheCity · 06/12/2021 19:44

I do yes, but when I'm sitting indoors all day bar maybe a dash to the Post Office/Tesco that might mean me being outside for three or four minutes and 90% of that in the shade, I'll take my chances.

In summer I use Factor 40 or 50, but even then only when I'm going to be outside for more than ten minutes or so Smile.

LiveFromNewYork · 06/12/2021 19:57

SPF after moisturiser. It’s not about burning it’s about protecting from UV light. Factor 50, there are a million available to suit all skin types. If you think it’s too greasy or causing break outs or a white cast you haven’t found the right one.

Gearedtoyou · 06/12/2021 19:59

I object to not being able to buy a moisturiser without sunscreen. I wear one when I need it, but for the small amount of time I spend outdoors in winter, I want the full benefit of every ray.

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2021 20:01

You really don’t need an SPF everyday in the UK, we need Vitamin D and in the middle of winter it’s very hard to get enough, so leave off the SPF. It’s just spouted by cosmetic companies to make you buy yet another product.
