Could I wear a jumper over this?

I will be travelling into London for a team Christmas lunch, and am planning to wear this dress:

www.hush-uk.com/athena-tiered-jersey-dress-cheetah-spot-black-brown/001419-3619.html

It's forecast to be chilly though, and I'm a cold person. Could I wear a jumper (or cardigan) over the dress, and if so, what type? I don't think anything I already have would really work, so would need to buy something.

Thanks

You could, if you found a jumper that was cropped to waist length - but I would wear a thermal top and leggings under it instead. I have a collection of thermals from M&S that I wear under long dresses. The trouble with adding a jumper is that I then feel too bulky and then I struggle to get my arms into my leather jacket!

AncienneEtudiante · 05/12/2021 10:37

Was going to say thermals underneath. I have some merino ones from Mountain Warehouse which are really fine. You wouldn't know I have them on.

Jayaywhynot · 05/12/2021 10:44

I was going to say wear thermals under it, you don't have to spend a lot, I got some from primark, they're great, you could also get a little cardi from primark

bubblicious3 · 05/12/2021 15:20

I have a few dresses like that, and I've embraced the 'sweater vest' trend, wearing a sleeveless jumper over the top. I like the look and it keeps me cosy. Check out Albaray for inspiration but I actually got my jumpers from Matalan!

dudsville · 05/12/2021 16:18

That's a cute dress and I agree with thermals. Can you rock the 80's oversized jumber vibe? Or as above, oversized but cropped?

LiterallyKnowsBest · 05/12/2021 16:57

This might work:

  • but then you might as well just wear a skirt …

You’d have to be quite spectacularly stylish to make a cardigan, however fashionable, look celebratory with the dress.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/12/2021 17:08

There are loads of cardis which would be fine.

Going against the trend, I think thermals under a dress for a meal out are a terrible idea. You don't know how hot the room will be, and eating and drinking tends to warm you up.

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/12/2021 17:10

How tall are you? if you are 5,6 or above I would avoid. It’s a very odd length.

It looks like a pretty normal mid-calf length to me. Which is what you want for that style of dress, I'd have thought. Confused

I agree, you'll be baking in a centrally heated room with thermals. Maybe a long sleeveless cardigan or a cropped chunky cardigan?
LadyEloise1 · 05/12/2021 17:16

I think it would a shame to " hide" the dress under a cardi.
I'd wear a long sleeved silk vest from Patra. Really light but warm.
Warm tights too.

Divebar2021 · 05/12/2021 17:17

How cold is this restaurant likely to be that you would wear thermals? A cardigan or sweater could at least be taken off. I’d go for something cropped but with loose sleeves.

ToooOldForThis · 05/12/2021 17:17

Great big scarf?

DreamThrum · 05/12/2021 18:39

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess I'm mainly concerned about the rest of the day, more than when I'm actually in the pub. I'd expect to take off any jumper /cardi on arrival, unless it's particularly chilly in there. The thermals idea might work, I'll look into it.

Can you change when you get there?

Aderyn21 · 05/12/2021 18:55

I have a summer dress with a long tiered floaty skirt like your dress, and I wear a fitted jumper with it in winter. I think it looks nice and make a dress more versatile. I think the jumper does have to be fitted though, not baggy.

notoldjustpastyoung · 07/12/2021 17:59

Wear something under it like a thickish t.shirt. Shame to spoil the line of the dress. I generally back on the t.shirt, short or long sleeves whatever will fit.

Ma53 · 07/12/2021 18:59

I have the same dress and had exactly same worries. Tried vest etc etc but decided against. It was warm enough, sleeves quite cosy. Wore thick tights and knee length boots and not cold at all.

StCharlotte · 07/12/2021 19:25

Am I missing something? Would a coat not do the trick? Grin

gunnersgold · 07/12/2021 19:41

Wear a black polo neck underneath it and leggings or tights

Winnietherose · 07/12/2021 20:11

I have that dress and I wear this black jumper over it www.fatface.com/women/clothing/knitwear/bonnie-bobble-jumper/971003.html?dwvar_971003_color=true%20black&cgid=women-clothing-knitwear#pagination=true&start=61

It is quite fitted and is a good length with the dress. I like a jumper over a dress as it is comfier on the waist than a skirt.

GrannyRose15 · 07/12/2021 20:21

Wear a vest

LadyEloise1 · 07/12/2021 20:41

I hate the sleeves of that dress but love the dress.,
If my wrists get cold I'm cold throughout.
I just don't see the point of 3/4 sleeves in winter in the British Isles

I'd agree with this re thermals. I did this once, the venue was really hot and I ended up in the ladies loo, struggling out of my thermal vest!!

I'd go for either a super long black cardigan or a fairly short and neat cardi stopping just at waist level.

It's a lovely dress. Have fun! Smile
