I am SO SICK of frizz, please help me

I feel like I have tried everything but I’m sure there are other things…

My hair WAS very dry but Olaplex and an amazing deep conditioner have really helped that. But even though it’s softer and less dry it’s still so frizzy!

It’s naturally wavy and even gently curly in parts and I have masses of it, medium texture but LOADS of hair if that makes sense.

I am HOPELESS at blow drying it so I have started to leave it to dry naturally; this has also helped with the dryness. And tbh it was no more or less frizzy when I did blow dry. But I would rather refrain from blow drying still as I much prefer leaving it. It’s very bushy if I blow dry whereas I get natural curls if I leave it.

I mainly think I’m getting my styling products wrong, both the type and when I apply them. I have a microfibre towel. I have tried applying products to soaking wet hair and to (microfibre) towel dried and it’s still just as frizzy.

I have used expensive and cheap products, nothing helps.

Currently I am using (and not really liking) Noughty hair cream OR Noughty gel. I read that gel was good for frizz but it certainly didn’t seem to help mine.

Should I be trying a leave-in conditioner? If so any reccs, AND would I still also need another styling product on top?

Is gel good for frizz prevention, if I can find a better one?

Any good curl/styling creams?

And how the blooming heck do I apply them? Wet hair? Damp hair?

I’m following a tip of not fiddling with my hair once it’s drying… makes zero difference to the frizz Sad

Should I be drying with a diffuser instead of leaving it to dry naturally?

I have a silk pillow case. Zero difference (though I do like the sensation at least!)

Basically I am sick of looking like a frizzy mess and would love your help! Even a reduction in frizz would do, I’m not expecting miracles. All my friends/school mums/colleagues seem to have frizz free hair and I’m not sure what I’m getting so badly wrong!

Yeah you sound like me. Things I find help -
Only shampooing once every 7 to 10 days, rinse conditioning between.
Leave to dry naturally
I've tried lots of products but my favourite is the affordable vo5 frizz free styling cream, I apply it to my dry hair and I find it works like a dream.

tiredanddangerous · 04/12/2021 22:29

Generally frizz means that you need more moisture. Do you deep condition every week?

I would get a leave in conditioner and start experimenting with different products. I have curly hair and it really is just trial and error until you find the right products and method of applying them.

I follow the curly girl method and it works really well for me - I don't use shampoo and use conditioners which don't contain drying alcohol or silicone.

Luckymummytoone · 04/12/2021 22:30

Label M anti frizz spray stuff (the one in the light blue) is amazing! More expensive but my hair is allllways frizzy until I discovered this! Xx

Avarua · 04/12/2021 22:31

Stop buying cheap shampoo: buy really good stuff and wash far less often.
I use L'Occitane Reparation shampoo. Instead of conditioner I use the Reparation hair oil (a tiny amount) once every couple of weeks.

ladygindiva · 04/12/2021 22:32

Oh yes i forgot I use aussies 3 min miracle weekly ( when I remember) and that helps

OverByYer · 04/12/2021 22:32

I have natural waves, not curls and have just started using Merwave products.
It’s working for me so far.

Thanks v much, appreciate the posts!!

Yep I deep condition and also shampoo as little as possible. I’ve read about curly girl and can’t quite get my head around all the finer points but I also avoid silicones etc. Trouble is I wonder if silicone is just a better bet for chronic frizz?!?

Will try that vo5 crème!

I feel like I have cupboards full of failed products tho sadly…

Do you mean this one Luckymummy?

www.lookfantastic.com/label.m-anti-frizz-mist-150ml/11769955.html

Do you have to use it before blow drying or can you spray it on and leave hair to dry naturally?

This range looks promising… (but then I always think that!)

I follow the Curly Girl routine. It's a faff to start but honestly worth the effort. Avoiding silicones now won't help if you haven't got rid of the ones left on your hair. There are other ingredients to avoid to (don't ask me what, I just only use approved products). My hair curls better than it ever did, and the frizz stays away a bit longer. Agree with pp who said frizz needs moisture.

ParkheadParadise · 04/12/2021 22:45

I like John Frieda Miraculous Recovery Deep Conditioner also use the serum.

AdamRyan · 04/12/2021 22:46

Glycerin makes my hair frizz and it's in most silicon free products :(

Rodders92 · 04/12/2021 22:54

I also get terribly frizzy hair with glycerine. It might be worth trying some glycerine free styling products/ leave in conditioners

Squigglesonthebear · 04/12/2021 22:54

Lube (seriously!). Just the tiniest amount though to avoid a greasy look. Your hair sounds very similar to mine and this is the best thing I've found!

friedeggandsauce · 04/12/2021 22:57

Curly girl didn't work for me- I ended up so fed up of looking awful everyday, I used to have a window of 20 mins when I washed it when it was passable so I've gone back to straightening!

I wish there was something which worked for my frizz as I've got decent waves there somewhere!

Llareggub · 04/12/2021 22:59

I had a Brazilian blow dry. Expensive but it was amazing and should last 4-6 months. My hair sounds a lot like yours, but it’s been transformed. The hairdresser said it would be life changing and I laughed, but I must admit she was right. No more messy buns, frizz etc. My hair looks fab within minimal fuss. I washed it for the first time since the treatment and tried without any styling products. I went out in the rain today and it still looks frizz free. Worth every penny,

ShineySparkleyChrissmassy · 04/12/2021 23:01

I use mousse, a huge handful, a bowlful basically, followed by a good dollop of curl cream. This is after wrapping in a towel for a few mins, hair feels damp and feels wet again after products are applied. Comb it through with a wide toothed comb. Either air dry or diffuser dry.

Drying without a diffuser is a definite no for curly hair. I tip my head upside down, gathering a pile of curls into the diffuser and pushing it up to my scalp for a few seconds. Keep changing areas. Half heat and half speed on the dryer for 5min, then change to lowest heat settings and still at half speed for another 5min, that's usually enough that it's almost dry and I stop there. Once completely dry, if it's too annoyingly voluminous or hanging wrong and in my eyes or something, its a question of clipping some back or putting it all up or whatever other style suits you.

I wash and condition every 2nd day.

Check your styling products and conditioner, if there's any silicone (rarely labelled as such, so you'll need to investigate fully) then you need a shampoo with sulfate in to wash the silicone out, otherwise it'll build up on your hair and cause dryness by sealing moisture out. If you want to be sulfate free you also need to be silicone free.

GameofPhones · 04/12/2021 23:04

The Braun Satin Iontec hairbrush works for me www.robertdyas.co.uk/braun-brabr710-satin-hair-7-iontec-brush-black
Also a stainless steel comb. Both reduce the static electricity that causes frizz.

ShineySparkleyChrissmassy · 04/12/2021 23:21

Here's my products. The green shampoo has sulfate because the red mousse has silicone. The red Shockwave mousse is strong enough to hold my hair on a drizzly frizzy weather day, even without added curl cream. The curl cream has silicone but it's water soluble so that's fine. The Maui sulfate free shampoo is handy because I generally don't need conditioner with it, except a 50p sized amount of olive oil once a week in place of the curl cream. So it saves me time.

Alberto Balsam shampoo and conditioner was £1. The blue Studio 2000 mousse comes from my corner shop for £1.99. The Maui hibiscus shampoo is around a tenner from Boots. Shockwave volume mousse and V05 curl cream are around £3-4 each. I'm not a brand snob.

You need to keep on top of ingredients because brands have a habit of changing them without mentioning it on the packet.

I am SO SICK of frizz, please help me
YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 05/12/2021 07:30

Thank you so much.

So I need to:

Check my products for silicones (the only one I’m actually concerned might have them is my deep conditioner as my styling products are labelled silicone free and my shampoo and conditioner are olaplex which I think (?) is silicone free)

If I’ve been using silicone, I temporarily (once??) use a sulphate-containing shampoo to get the silicone out?

I then proceed with silicone-free products. And a regular sulphate-free shampoo.

Does that sound as if I’ve got it right?!?

Oh and/or I need to check my products for glycerin! Thanks for that heads-up, I had no idea glycerin causing frizz might be A Thing. Is glycerin labelled as glycerin?! I find the labelling so confusing Blush

OP posts:
YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 05/12/2021 07:37

Ooooh my deep conditioning treatment has Glycerin and something called Amodimethicone which sounds like a silicone? Have been googling but it’s so confusing… hmmm maybe my lovely deep treatment has been making it worse ConfusedConfused

I’ve started using L’Oréal elvive wonder water. It’s silicone free and really makes a huge difference.

alphaechokiwi · 05/12/2021 07:52

I have a lot of hair, it's quite wavy but not really curly. I tried every product going, the best of them left my hair soft but always still frizzy. I can't bear to think how much money I spent on products over the years.
I bought a GHD Glide hot brush after seeing it recommended here. It's honestly the only thing thats ever worked. It leaves my hair smooth but with volume, not 'flat'. And it's very easy to use, just like a brush. It was quite expensive but paid for itself within months because I'm not buying every product going to sort the frizz.

Color wow dream coat is great for frizz, also olaplex 6
