Dry lips

Hi all, not sure this is the right topic but I'll try.
I'm looking for advice re dry lips treatment. This is chronic. Been suffering for about three years and it's driving me mad. Especially in the winter.
Carmex used to be my go to, and it worked exceptionally well. However I've developed an allergy to it so can no longer wear it.
So many of the over the counter ones, similar allergies, or just not effective enough.

I use Lucas pawpaw just now. No reactions to it, but it's only slightly helpful. My lips are just badly cracked with fine lines developing ( previous steroid cream to help with allergic reactions).

Any miracle products or ideas. Please no MLMs. Thanks

I also had an allergic reaction to Carmex. I’ve never come across someone like me where lip balms don’t seem to really ‘work’ - I have the same experience with pawpaw too. The only thing that works for me is the Hurraw moon lip balm. That one specifically - the other flavours don’t work for me. I stockpile it from Amazon in fear they ever discontinue it!

This is really interesting and helpful. Thank you all for your suggestions. I've ordered the O Keeffe's, the lux reve de miel, and the lansolips. That's about all I can afford just now. I'll try them all out, and then next stop will be 8 hour cream ( although I think I tried that before).

I also tried every flavour of carmex ( allergic to them all) blistex, Vaseline etc, and no real improvement.

I'll willingly go through the whole list in sequence!

@CarolineForbes have you got a link? I've done a search on Amazon snd found every flavour bar that one. Let's hope it's not out of stock!

Another one here who uses Lansinoh. It's amazing stuff and by far the best product I've used for soothing dry lips and keeping them in good condition.

LateMumma · 04/12/2021 15:21

I was told to try cracked heel cream, it worked a treat.

EllaPaella · 04/12/2021 15:48

La Roche Posay lip balm is amazing.

TheDarrellRivers · 04/12/2021 18:09

I apply hyaluronic acid under my lipstick in the morning, and again under lip balm in the evening (I'm already using it on the rest of my face.) This might be something that would work for you without the additional balm.

Handsnotwands · 04/12/2021 18:46

Fellow sufferer here. I’ve tried all the balms and none help

I’ve recently switched to SLS free toothpaste and although it’s early days I think I might see a small improvement

CarolineForbes · 04/12/2021 19:13

@courtshoe it’s this one :) www.amazon.co.uk/Hurraw-Night-Treatment-Balm-4-3g/dp/B005IC2MTW?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Brewandhoney · 04/12/2021 19:15

Okeefes, lanisoh or blister relief cream. Might be worth looking at your toothpaste too. Some (the oral b ones are bad for it) make my lips incredibly sore

Brewandhoney · 04/12/2021 19:16

Blistex not blister! The one in a metal tube, red lid.

nachocheese · 04/12/2021 19:19

Hard to find in shops anymore, I have had to resort to buying it in multipacks from Amazon but I love original Chapstick, in the dark blue wrapper. It's the only thing that works for me. The strawberry one is also ok, but I love the original.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 04/12/2021 19:23

I've been using Burts Bees after having the same issue with Carmex. I think it's a vicious circle with using/needing/getting dryer etc. I've never been able to go cold turkey though.
I've also heard good things about Lanosh nipper cream.
Check your toothpaste too. Colgate whitening always gives me awful sore lips and mouth.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 04/12/2021 19:23

So many spelling mistakes! Sorry!

EllaPaella · 04/12/2021 20:21

My lips are always much much drier this time of the year. I think being indoors with central heating really doesn't help - drinking plenty fluids throughout the day definitely helps.

goose1964 · 04/12/2021 21:28

Lip oil, it's like a gloss only moisturising, I get really dry lips due to a cpap, and it works as well as blisteze

Unmerited · 04/12/2021 22:56

It might be worth using a fluoride free and / or SLS toothpaste for a short while to see if that helps. Obviously long term you might want to talk to your dentist, in the event it works, but it’s the other thing that may be irritating your lips - in the way that Carmex does.

holymolyguacamoles · 04/12/2021 23:07

@TinaYouFatLard

I know this sounds weird but I kind of became addicted to lip balms/treatments. The more I used the more I needed it. I now refuse to use anything on my lips and they’re much better. I drink a lot of water and hydrate from the inside.

I was going to ask if Op is hydrated as this is the first sign for me that I need to drink more.

frugalkitty · 04/12/2021 23:19

My go to is the Blistex in a tube. The medicated one in the metal tube is the best but it's hard to get, otherwise they do one in a white plastic tube which comes a close second.

courtshoe · 05/12/2021 00:31

Thanks again for all your helpful comments.
I could drink water more. That I do know.

Toothpaste isn't a problem. I actually am a dentist irl, so no stranger to mouth/lip issues. I've ruled out infections.

So Amazon delivered the O Keefe lip balm and overnight balm this evening. I'll try them first, and drink more water.

Eucerin Aquaphor, not the lip stuff just the normal stuff. It's often recommended for lips when on isotretinoin.
