Necklace to make me look 'with it' (remote interview)

CharmingScene · 03/12/2021 21:40

Cringing as I write the phrase 'with it'. But I need help!

I have a remote job interview coming up and it's in an industry where I'm going to be quite a bit older than a lot of my colleagues.

I'm a bit worried about ageism / unconscious bias in the interviewers. (I'm in my mid 40s.)

Seeing as all they'll see is my top half, can anyone help with nice necklace ideas to make me look a bit less ancient?

I guess something a bit kind of 'edgy', but one that I can pull off? (Confidence is low and not feeling like I can pull off anything at the moment...)

I've got a million other things to worry about, like swotting up on the job itself and the presentation, but any extra thing to make me feel a bit more confident would help.

Hmmm. I think necklaces themselves might be a bit ageing. Statement necklaces are a bit Prue Leith aren't they? I am nearly 40 and work with lots of chic 20-somethings and very few of them wear any jewellery other than stud earrings and maybe a very simple chain necklace.

CommanderBurnham · 03/12/2021 21:47

If anything, keep it simple and classic. Are you sure this the right place for you?

stalkersaga · 03/12/2021 21:48

One of these relatively simple gold chains from Hush would be contemporary. I've just ordered the art deco-style locket from there.

CharmingScene · 03/12/2021 21:48

Yes I was definitely planning to stay away from the 'statement' necklace. I know exactly what you mean!

But I just wondered if there might be nice necklaces out there that could make me look like I've made a bit of an effort / make me look a bit less blaah.

I'll probably wear really plain navy top (possibly another mistake!), so was just thinking of something to add a bit of interest.

I usually don't wear jewellery myself apart from studs, so really unsure of myself in this department.

I don't pretend to be cool or trendy at all but I love Lines & Current. It's simple but classy.

Thanks - this is exactly the kind of intel I need!

When I was young (in the 90s) I was an indie kid through and through. Then when I outgrew that I never really knew what my style was. And now I'm suddenly in my 40s and realise I haven't got a flipping clue.

(I should probably stop saying words like flipping too Smile)

Ha - good question. I'm trying to career change out of a profession I feel like I'm slowly dying in, so it is a leap into the unknown.

I live the phrase With it, reminds me of my granny

Wrink · 03/12/2021 21:58

I am 47 and work in a creative agency so I’m forced to be ‘with it’ even though my natural tendency, long before Covid, was towards trackies and Uggs.

I like torques. They tread an interesting line between minimal and maximal. There’s one inspired by Anish Kapoor at the Pitzhanger museum shop that I have my eye on; I also lust after Georg Jensen.

CharmingScene · 03/12/2021 22:06

Thanks @Wrink I'd never heard of a torque. So helpful - they look lovely.

What about a layered necklace. There’s lots of them around at the mo. Two or three different length delicate chains/pendants worn together. There’s loads about at the mo. I’ve just ordered a nice trio from Etsy. A kind of silver star and disc combo. Good luck with your interview

Ha - I think that's my problem. Oh god, new necklace and new vocab needed too!

Thanks @Beachgirl33 - putting layered necklace into Etsy.

Is it this one @Wrink? It's very striking, but oy the price!

CharmingScene · 03/12/2021 22:12

Thanks @stalkersaga was trying to google that and hadn't found it.

Yes, my budget is a bit more Oliver Bonas Grin

But I could scout for something similar but a bit more affordable.

Thanks @PetitePiggy will take a look.

Monica Vinader? They have lots of mix and match chains and pendants, layering of delicate necklaces seems to be the thing nowadays.

I would probably consider my hair more important than a necklace. Certainly what your hairstyle is will have an impact on what style of necklace will suit you most. Ive just had my hair cut short in a minimalist short style ( above ears) - quite sleek so a bold statement necklaces look ok. Transferred onto someone else might not look the same. A fairly safe bet is a couple of fine gold chains with different small pendant / charms on. (It’s not supposed to look too neat & tidy.)

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 04/12/2021 00:16

I've been doing lots of remote interviews as the employer recently and honestly have not paid any attention to what people are wearing. You can see so little of an outfit and with WFH becoming so much more of a norm, the concept of dressing smart or to impress in the interview has disappeared.

Wear something you feel good and confident in.

CharmingScene · 04/12/2021 00:27

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo that's really reassuring, and a good point. You really can't see too much on Teams / Zoom can you.

Thanks @evilharpy - I can deffo see now layering is a 'thing'. So great to have this stuff pointed out to me, I must live under a rock.

I was going to say layering is the way forward. I do have a couple of rings from Monica Vinader which I always get complimented on. Other than that Astley Clarke have some nice pieces and Etsy are great for something more unique
