Looking for the warmest jacket for below freezing temperatures -

Looked at Canadian Goose and North Face but either too expensive or then a a bit frumpy for a teenager. Seen lots of jackets but many are not truly warm enough abs so have had to do quite a few returns- Based on your experiences, what would you recommend for freezing temperatures?

Fjallraven Kanken. Both the Nuuk Parka and the Singi Down.
Uniqlo make cheaper down jackets.

Waitaway1970 · 02/12/2021 18:05

Sorry should’ve said it’s for DD age 18 who likes fashionable clothes

Uniqlo and Superdry?

RedPanda25 · 02/12/2021 18:13

I've just bought a didrikson jacket and it's really warm and waterproof.

chilliplant634 · 02/12/2021 18:18

To be honest, they are all ugly. I'd be looking into padded down puffa type jacket. But then you have to accept it won't be waterproof.

Waitaway1970 · 02/12/2021 18:20

Thank you @LuchiMangsho will take a look

@chilliplant634 this is the trouble. Give me a wool coat any day but she needs warmth where she is as it’s freezing (below feeezing)…but as you say they are quite ugly ☹️

Uniqlo has a down jacket that is waterproof. I just bought it for my niece for Christmas (in her late teens). You can either be warm or stylish- not both I think!

Cakey46 · 02/12/2021 21:16

The teens all seem to love the North Face Nuptse jacket which I imagine is warm enough for sub zero (and trendy)

Walesrecommendations · 02/12/2021 21:18

I have a lovely padded thick coat from Roxy, it's called the dawn jacket. They do other snow wear type stuff, I found it really good quality.

rightsideoftheroad · 02/12/2021 21:19

I have the uniclo puffer and it's a dream, don't feel the cold in it at all

idontlikealdi · 02/12/2021 21:21

Nobody wears north face here anymore. I'd check what she really wants before you shell out cash. High probability shoe won't wear it at all.

buddy79 · 02/12/2021 21:23

I have a down jacket from Penfield that is toasty.
Patagonia have some nice ones though ££

Where is she? Could you not give her money so she could get a coat she likes where she is as there might be better shops for buying practical coats for that temp.

Have you looked at Didriksons? Lots of theirs are also wind and waterproof too.

CSJobseeker · 02/12/2021 21:26

Whereabouts is she? Depending on location, she might be able to get away without something waterproof (if it's somewhere with dry cold climate, or so cold it is rarely above freezing in winter so no rain).

allfurcoatnoknickers · 02/12/2021 21:27

Mackage. I've got an old version of the Kay and it's not frumpy at all. I also like the look of the Freya.

Bonbon21 · 02/12/2021 21:30

cotswold outdoors....ayacucho-womens-kiruna-eco-parka..£135

This... the warmest jacket I have ever owned..sorry cant do link!

SusannaQueen · 02/12/2021 21:35

They are all ugly. Warmest coat I've ever owned is a North Face Arctic Parka, teens still wear NF here. Fjallraven are trendy and cope with serious weather, but they are super pricey and ugly.
Patagonia are fab, probably not trendy, but ethical and pricey.
Rab are good too.

PurpleBerryDancer · 02/12/2021 21:48

Got a thin down coat or gilet to go inside another coat. Can take them off together and no one will really know

chilliplant634 · 03/12/2021 10:36

As other pp mentioned, options for a "proper" subzero weather coat.

North face arctic parka. Its ugly as hell. I just ordered one. I will be sending it back, as I can't bear the thought of spending so much on an ugly coat. The size was too big for me as well.

Fjallraven coats. Again very pricey. They are also boxy and ugly. The kanken didn't look too bad, but it's not as warm as the nuuk.

I'm ordering myself a didriksons erika. It is also ugly, but a lot cheaper than north face and will get me through the school runs.

The didriksons amina didn't look too bad. I think you should decide whether it really needs to be fully waterproof or not. There is a better selection of stylish down puffers. They will be water resistant, but not fully waterproof. And maybe you can later them?

chilliplant634 · 03/12/2021 10:37

I mean layer them!

Mumzoo5070 · 03/12/2021 16:45

I have a North Face Nuptse jacket, bought about 15 years ago for £50, now sell for over 4x that!! It's phenomenal and still looks brand new.

TheVolturi · 03/12/2021 16:57

I despise cruelty that comes with down jackets. I bought a Superdry Everest and the filling is recycled plastic bottles, 30, in fact! It's really really warm.

LoveLabradors · 03/12/2021 17:16

I’m with @TheVolturi. It’s a truly depressingly cruel trade. Very few brands use recycled down as yet. I’m also someone who spends a lot of time outdoors in all weathers, have spent time in exceptionally cold places outside and I’ve never needed down or fur. Layering is key. Excellent technical coats without down can keep anyone warm. I’m always shocked at the love for Uniqlo down from influencers etc - how on earth do they think the birds are treated for down that cheap?
