Do you tip your hairdresser

I’ve recently started going to a hairdresser after years of doing it myself. I did initially change full scalp bleach to highlights but changed my mind back to scalp bleach. It costs £100, I haven’t tipped her the past two times but I feel like she is expecting one. What do people think?

I don’t, but he owns the salon so I don’t think he would expect it. I’m due in the week before Christmas and will bring him a bottle of something, after lockdown I took in a big box of posh biscuits for the staffroom, and champagne for him. When his wife had a baby last year I bought a nice little outfit for her (baby, not wife!).

I go every five weeks so spend plenty in cash money there!

JinglingHellsBells · 27/11/2021 22:07

I used to for years but what I tipped seemed a bit of an insult compared to the cost of the cut/ colour ( round about £130) and I find the whole concept of tips a bit weird. Lately I've given them 'post lockdown gifts' and give my hairdresser a decent Christmas present ( £15-£20)

HeddaGarbled · 27/11/2021 23:04

Yes, I do. I assume it’s one of those jobs, like hospitality, where the wages are low, so the staff rely on tips to make a decent income.

RonaldMcDonald · 28/11/2021 01:33

Yes, £20 a time

MrsTimRiggins · 28/11/2021 01:43

I don’t now she has her own little salon at home. She upped her prices, understandably, to cover her new costs, and obviously the whole payment now goes to her, as opposed to through the salon when she just had a chair iyswim?
Also it’s £150 so that’s plenty enough to shell out 😅

Roseyleaf · 28/11/2021 01:51

I always tip but I do grudge it, especially as I feel the service is a bit rushed.
I'm on a low wage myself and don't get tips.

bonfireheart · 28/11/2021 01:58

No.

CandyCane3000 · 28/11/2021 02:05

I would but my salons don't allow it on chip and pin and no tip jars, I go alot so I have a regular lady who cute my hair so I get her a Christmas gift instead

JaceLancs · 28/11/2021 02:18

I don’t tip for hair or beauty
I do give generous Xmas gift or for wedding baby etc
In each case it’s the salon owner who does my hair or nails or lashes

Mantlemoose · 28/11/2021 02:20

No I don't tip anyone though.

blublub · 28/11/2021 02:32

Yes, usually 10%

Rowan8 · 28/11/2021 02:47

Money has been very tight for the past few years and my hairdresser knows this.. I have to have roots done every 5-6 weeks and highlights re done every few months. I haven’t been able to tip her for years and she’s ok with this.. even comes to my home.. so don’t if you feel you’re paying enough to the person already. Considering colour used is maximum £15-£20..the rest is profit for the one or two hours spent on your hair… so they get more than enough for the price they charge you already.. x

TableSetting · 28/11/2021 06:12

No - my hairdresser makes really good money whereas I’m just above minimum wage and never get tips in my job.

PlumManor · 28/11/2021 06:15

Yes a tenner, but I get roots, highlights, cut and Olaplex for £71 where I live.

R0tational · 28/11/2021 06:22

No way. Hairdressing charges seem like a complete rip off already.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/11/2021 06:23

No and I have to say I don't feel guilty. Especially as her prices have gone up from £39 to £52 for the exact same service in the last 3 years!

HelloChompy · 28/11/2021 17:05

I do but I use the local village hairdressers and my wet cut costs £15. The local town charges a fair bit more for the same service so I'm happy to give a bit more. It's a lovely atmosphere and a good laugh in there and I am happy with my cut.

Helpstopthepain · 28/11/2021 17:07

Yes because I love her.

ginslinger · 28/11/2021 17:08

I don't tip my hairdresser because he owns the salon but I tip the junior who washes my hair - £2 - at xmas I give her £10

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/11/2021 17:08

Yes. £5.00. Really expensive though so think I’m paying enough.

LawnFever · 28/11/2021 17:10

Never, I think it’s odd that some jobs get tips sometimes and others don’t, if I’m told a price I’ll pay the price, I’m not adding on a random amount just ‘because’.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/11/2021 17:11

@Mantlemoose

No I don't tip anyone though.
Why not?
WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 28/11/2021 17:13

No I don't. She's the salon owner if that makes a difference?

I do tend to take in a bottle of something for her at Christmas, special birthday etc

BelleNoir · 28/11/2021 17:13

Yes always £5

Libertaire · 28/11/2021 17:16

Of course not. I don’t tip supermarket checkout workers, fast food workers, taxi drivers etc etc either.

I hate tipping. It’s outdated, feudal and demeaning. And with the minimum wage set to increase to £9.50 per hour, completely unnecessary.
