End of rant. My 5 year old needs age 7-8 now, he's tall, and everything is black or grey or Xbox or PS4 or a combination of all of those with ink splats. I'm not against funky coloured ink splats but he likes colours. Blocks of colour, what happened to stripes even ?

Try ,www.Oh Dorothy.co.uk, they have lovely bright waffle long sleeve tops in lots of colours by slugs and snails .

Have you tried Boden? It's full of colour. Lots on ebay second hand too
imnotscroogebut · 26/11/2021 21:25

@underneaththeash

Next have loads! I’ve never dressed a child in black.
I have bought some plain next basic long sleeves so got orange and purple which he loves. But I meant more generally like pJs and super market type bits is all horrible over age 6-7. Will check out the Boden sale for him and the other suggestions.

GAP can be good for more colourful stuff but most of our non black / grey / blue clothes are H&M or small brands.

I don't really like a lot of the duns / maxomorra prints either, for that sort of age.

imnotscroogebut · 27/11/2021 17:30

@heymammy

You're better off shopping online, George asda have some more colourful stuff as do next and a wee bit in m&s
I do, but they stop at 6-7 for anything remotely colourful

Mine used to wear a lot of Boden and clash colours and patterns.

We donated all to charity shops so that someone could find some unexpected gems in among the sludgy colours but lots of people sell bundles online too.

Hairycut · 27/11/2021 17:33

Forgot to say they wore and washed well

RebeccaCloud9 · 27/11/2021 17:41

Also, why on earth is it absolutely impossible to get boys trousers that aren't either jeans or joggers at the mo? I cannot find cotton Chino type trousers anywhere!

Throughabushbackwards · 27/11/2021 17:46

John Lewis have lots of colourful boys clothes. And cotton chinos Rebeccacloud.

RebeccaCloud9 · 27/11/2021 18:05

@throughabushbackwards thank you for the tip! unfortunately not one single pair of navy cotton trousers in his size (4-5) but there is a pair that would be perfect if they come back in.

Throwing out a tentative Wankel on this thread 😁

Acunningruse · 27/11/2021 18:09

Yes yes yes! Can I recommend Mountain Warehouse to you. I got 9 yo DS a lovely bright red hoodie from there with rainbow stripes across the chest last week.

lupad · 27/11/2021 18:12

the colour palette is sludge, why?!

EuromamaAussiekids · 27/11/2021 18:20

I used to buy a lot of Frugi but the costs have gone up and quality has severely declined ( lots of fading, shrinkage etc)

EuromamaAussiekids · 27/11/2021 18:23

Boden have some nice clothes too but horrendously expensive for something with a rainbow design on it or not actually in stock online.

Clymene · 27/11/2021 18:24

Poland O Pyret

KatharinaRosalie · 27/11/2021 18:27

7 is still OK, try Villervalla and Maxomorra for example. They also fit big.

What happens size 11 up though is dreadful. Just take H&M, they still have some colourful things for younger boys, but the 11+ range is back, grey, khaki. My DS is still a child, not an emo teenager.

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 27/11/2021 18:49

My 8 year old has sadly had enough of max and duns (loves how soft the material is but finds the patterns a bit young) but villervalla still goes down well, block colours are still ok apparently.

inkworks273 · 27/11/2021 21:21

M&S have some nice colourful jogging suits just now.

Teaandcakeordeath83 · 27/11/2021 21:28

Boys clothes in general are crap. I have two older daughter's so was spoiled in being able to navigate buying their clothes whilst avoiding all the hideous "be kind"/ unicorns/ princess shite. With boys absolutely everything has a digger/ tractor/ dinosaur/ camo/ cartoons or naff logo/ phrase on it. I only shop at H&M for him now with the odd foray into Zara and Lindex.

Op Lindex might be a good fit for your boy. Lots of colourful scandi style print/ plain coloured clothes and loads of it is unisex.

alpaca44 · 27/11/2021 21:30

@NatalieH2220

The gaming thing really irritates me and my sons only 4. Now he's into the older boys clothes everything is gaming related. Hadn't actually realised about the colours too but you're right!
Totally agree. Too many gaming tops. Including Fortnite which is rated 12+ yet found all over younger boys’ clothes!
Peppercorn9 · 27/11/2021 21:37

Frugi is the best I’ve found - good quality, ethical, and washes/wears well. It holds its resale value well compared to cheaper labels too (lots of second hand on eBay)

bruffin · 27/11/2021 21:38

verbaudet /la redoute always had colourful boys clothes

WildStallyn · 27/11/2021 21:49

Another vote for Boden, Frugi, Joules, Polarn o Pyret, Lindex.... I mostly buy second hand.

MammaLovesLeopard · 27/11/2021 22:01

Totally agree op.
