AIBU to want to get rid of my hair and wear wigs!

Just that really- I have very thick hair, and loads of it and others (hairdressers, family, friends etc) often tell me how nice it is, that I'm so lucky to hair such thick hair bla bla. What they don't see is the 45 min battle I have trying to make it look smooth when blow drying, the inability to ever do anything nice with it unless I have an hour spare in the morning (which I definitely do not with two young DC), and the nightmare I have with it on holiday and in hot weather. I am seriously debating either shaving or cutting it all off and wearing wigs instead- I think my life would be so much easier! I really like my hair when it's been blow dried bouncy or blow dried smooth and then wanded- and I'm lucky because I can get about 5 days out of it but that only happens for a special occasion such as a family wedding or christening- so about 3 times a year 🤣 the remaining 353 days it's either a mess (as I've left it to dry naturally) or up in a messy bun- so what's the point in having all this 'nice' hair for approximately 3 times a year?! I'm lucky in a sense that if never looks greasy and I can go up to a week in between washes but it just constantly feels like I don't have the time to do anything nice with jt. Another issue that's recently popped up with it is the lovely scraggly, wiry greys that are now growing around my hairline. I'm only about 5% grey so it's not enough to justify a full head of brown (my hair colour) dye to cover it so I've resulted in blonde highlights as this blends in with the grey in between hairdresser visits but I don't actually suit blonde highlights 🙄 so now I just want to get rid and wear lovely, easy to manage wigs. Am I crazy??? Has anyone done this and where do I even start with sourcing a good wig that nobody would really notice that it's not a funny own hair 🤣 x

Thank you all for your advise, it's much appreciated Smile there's a few suggestions I'll be having a little think about so probably won't be reaching for the razor just yet!x

Good luck with your decision. I do wear wigs sometimes but more often than not don't bother. I love having short hair.

I have very thick hair..hairdresser says one of the thickest she has worked with. Get it blowdried every Friday for last 5 years. Has changed my life. Never wash hair in between.. always looks well. Really holds style. Last week l met a friend on my way to hairdresser and she said..have you just had your hair done?...didn't like to say its a week old!!
My ds has same hair and has at times lost patience and shaved it all off but it grows so quickly it was soon back to normal.

I have to say as l have got older...60..l really appreciate my good thick hair.

@ECarmel No, number one all over. Sorry, I know you were asking about wigs specifically

Ozanj · 26/11/2021 17:45

Short hair often doesn’t suit thick hair especially if it’s also wavy or curly - you need length to weigh it down into something manageable. It might sound strange but growing it even longer might make it more manageable. I have incredibly thick hair and it was only when I grew it to waist length that it became amazing. Of course it’s all falling out again now due to flipping thyroid problems.

Try looking at some Sheitel videos on YouTube, some Jewish ladies shave their hair for religious reasons and wear wigs to cover their heads. There are some great videos by wig makers and wearers about how to wash and care for your wig, and how to get a good fitting. You're talking multiple hundreds of pounds to get a nice wig with a personal fitting, and they recommend regular appointments with a specialist to wash and reset the style, so it would give you a good idea of the maintenance and costs.

Keratin conditioner. I have bristly, coarse, slightly wavy hair that has been the bane of my life for 40 years! I discovered keratin and my life has changed beyond measure. I can brush, rough dry and its as smooth as if I'd spent an hour blowing it and straightening it. And stays that way. The whole texture is different

Nat6999 · 27/11/2021 00:18

My friend has alopecia & wears wigs, she created a career out of it & now owns a wig shop. She lives in horror of her hair growing back because she loves her wigs, I must admit I'm a tiny bit jealous of her because her hair always looks so perfect, she never has bad hair days & has a wig for every day of the week & any occasion.

LoveMyPiano · 27/11/2021 01:13

I didn''t find your OP offensive in any way (and yet would LOVE to - and once upon a time, did - have nice thick hair); wigs are not bad at all, even in summer. It can be quite addictive, and does not need to cost masses of money either.

Is that a salon treatment or just a conditioner you use at home?
Blahdyblahbla · 27/11/2021 11:16

I've got hair like yours and a Brazilian blow dry changed my life. Reduced the drying time by about 90% and the frizz by the same

MeredithGreyishblue · 27/11/2021 12:41

Good old Tresemmé. Keratin Smooth conditioner with the 7 day treatment once a week.

Monolithique · 27/11/2021 13:09

What about going for a short hairstyle, a pixie cut or similar? Tamsin Greig has (i reckon) got v thick hair and it looks fab imo.

But there are people on here who are wig wearers and very happy with their wigs so perhaps they will post.

Thank you! Am going to give it a go!

I’ve mixed feelings about the OP - I have alopecia and wear wigs, I dearly wish for long thick hair!!

Firstly wigs aren’t always way to manage, I spend a good hour wrestling mine to make it look decent and live in fear of the rain or high humidity, or wind. Basically the weather full stop! If you have a human hair wig you have to use moisturising products as they get dry and break easily. And I had to spend some time getting over the ‘ick’ factor of wearing someone else’s hair (and this being Mumsnet I’m sure someone will be along to tell you that human hair wigs are explorative or something).
Synthetic wigs can’t be heat styled - or at least most of them aren’t heat safe and I buggered up my one and only synthetic wigs by getting something out of a hot oven - it crisped up the front and melted it. Yuk. Plus I found my synthetic went frizzy after a couple of months wear.

And they are expensive at like £400 a pop. I’ve heard tell of the NHS giving prescription wigs twice a year but my GP looked blank when I asked.

Then you have all the fun of getting the wig to stay in the right place on your head, not pulling it off to one side and scaring the kids! Or living in fear of the wind blowing it off. And if you are dating - horror! When do you tell a bloke that it’s a wig?!? I mean that’s not the kind of thing he wants to find out at the wrong moment,…

So yeah. I think I’d take the hair if it were up to me!!

A bob can be tricky with thick and wavy hair - you can end up with the bushy triangle effect. But properly short like Audrey Tautou's can easily be achieved with a good cut, and can look amazing.
MarleneDietrichsSmile · 27/11/2021 16:21

Can you plait/braid it? I French plait mine sometimes, and even sleep in it Grin

Then just look a bit disheveled but still ok the next day Grin (lazy hair day)

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 27/11/2021 16:21

Or a Brazilian blow dry

userxx · 27/11/2021 16:22

Count your blessings op and be thankful.

BobbieT1999 · 27/11/2021 16:24

A weekly keratin mask and Colour WOW smoothing spray after blow drying. Also like Bumble & Bumble curly humidity gel and have taken to wearing a shower cap when not washing my hair.

I can't stretch to weekly blow dries but having one with a treatment every 3 months does make a difference!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 27/11/2021 16:31

I have the opposite problem to you, really fine and wavy hair, and the only thing that makes it look good is a regular blow dry. I’ve also had keratin treatments in the past but personally I prefer to spend the money on blow drys.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 27/11/2021 16:46

I have the same hair. There’s no magic solution beyond paying a hairdresser for blow dries. Having a trainee makes it cheaper. Heard good things about keratin/Brazilian/Japanese blow dries but the chemicals are v strong so can’t have as I’m pregnant.
Whatever you do though - do not get it cut short! Anyone who says that this is a good idea does not actually have your hair type, they just think they do. Your problems result from the texture not the length. If you have short hair then there is no messy bun or rough dry option. You have to style your hair every day. And keep it cleaner.

I have hair issues (admittedly alopecia isn't one) and do not want to diminish your experience or anyone else's - but I have not had as many issues as you have, I am happy to say.

My wigs have often been complimented as though they were my own hair - I ride a bike a lot, and have been known to risk a ride with some particular wig/s; have also been rained on, and out in Storm Arwen today (although at the edge of it here I think) and no concerns at all.
The most I have spent - as it is such a nightmare buying online - is about £200 for a Raquel Welch shortish one (chin length wavy bob with nice side-swept fringe) - wich always gets compliments (and even second looks from men -rolls eyes - which I am long past even thinking about!).
I do complete whichever supplier's form for not paying VAT due to my reasons, and this would apply for an alopecia sufferer I am certain.

The one that cost the least I actually bought from someone in the US (via a facebook group) and I wear that several times a week, even though it is a different style and colour from the RW (who cares?) - longer, highlighted and more like what I actually had once upon a time. I was approached for directions (to one of the fancier restaurants) in a huge shopping centre the other day, and the woman who asked me said, "I thought you would know becuase you look classy and as if you would have good taste" - she would not have said that if I had not been wearing the one I call Pamela. This one actually cost me 35 dollars (!) including postage.

Yes, I would like a personally fitted Folea costing thousands, but it's not something I would spend that amount of money on, when I can get a satisfactory effect with the ones I have (I do have some mistakes, but give them to wig banks, or maybe sell them via fb groups/s).

I would say that, as in most things, everyone has a different experience, and a story to share. And mine has been - although blunderng - quite positive Smile Flowers

TulipsGarden · 27/11/2021 18:48

Keratin treatment or get an undercut to take the weight out. Or both! Wigs are hot and itchy.

ilovecherries · 27/11/2021 20:01

I would say my experience of wigs is pretty positive as well. I’ve been bald for over 40 years, I do have some fuzz patches but shave them every week. I’ve not worn wigs for all that time - they used to be dire - but now I have loads in different colours and styles. Always synthetic. Not boiling hot at all for me, never move on my head. I do nothing to stick them down, simply pull on and go. I do get VAT relief for them, and always buy when there are offers on. Very rarely pay more than £150. Our local hairdresser charges nearly that for a cut and colour, so… I like Jon Renau, Rene of Paris, Rachel Welch and Ellen Wille.
