AIBU to want to get rid of my hair and wear wigs!

Just that really- I have very thick hair, and loads of it and others (hairdressers, family, friends etc) often tell me how nice it is, that I'm so lucky to hair such thick hair bla bla. What they don't see is the 45 min battle I have trying to make it look smooth when blow drying, the inability to ever do anything nice with it unless I have an hour spare in the morning (which I definitely do not with two young DC), and the nightmare I have with it on holiday and in hot weather. I am seriously debating either shaving or cutting it all off and wearing wigs instead- I think my life would be so much easier! I really like my hair when it's been blow dried bouncy or blow dried smooth and then wanded- and I'm lucky because I can get about 5 days out of it but that only happens for a special occasion such as a family wedding or christening- so about 3 times a year 🤣 the remaining 353 days it's either a mess (as I've left it to dry naturally) or up in a messy bun- so what's the point in having all this 'nice' hair for approximately 3 times a year?! I'm lucky in a sense that if never looks greasy and I can go up to a week in between washes but it just constantly feels like I don't have the time to do anything nice with jt. Another issue that's recently popped up with it is the lovely scraggly, wiry greys that are now growing around my hairline. I'm only about 5% grey so it's not enough to justify a full head of brown (my hair colour) dye to cover it so I've resulted in blonde highlights as this blends in with the grey in between hairdresser visits but I don't actually suit blonde highlights 🙄 so now I just want to get rid and wear lovely, easy to manage wigs. Am I crazy??? Has anyone done this and where do I even start with sourcing a good wig that nobody would really notice that it's not a funny own hair 🤣 x

Not actually my own hair that was supposed to say!

I've got thick hair too and it's a real faff. I think wigs can bring their own issues - they can be hot and itchy, for starters - I would start by just having a short hair cut, there are lots of good cuts for thick, possibly unruly hair.

Hi thanks for your reply! It's funny you say that, I'm growing out a bob just now so I have tried that. I was kind of hoping that I'd be able to spend a good 40 mins on it just once and then it stay like that for 5 days (due to there being no length at the back to get wavy and a mess in my sleep) 🤣 I know that's optimistic anyway! What happened is that I had the same problems as before really but then I couldn't even tie it up in a messy bun! I was convinced that a short hair cut would be the answer 🤣 x

Same crazy hair! Just find a cheap hairdresser and have it washed and blow dried once a week, scruffy bun for the 2 days b4 hair appointment

cheesiestwotsit · 26/11/2021 14:51

I think you might need to go shorter than a bob!

Do it. I have. It's such a release. I feel free!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 26/11/2021 14:56

My DD shaved all her hair off when she was 17....said it was the most liberating feeling. Have to admit it looks fab

MrsBertBibby · 26/11/2021 14:57

I finally had my fine, wispy, frizz-prone wavy hair cut short last month, I mean short short, not a bob, and it is AMAZING!! I can't stop scrunching it around.

I don't think I'm brave enough for that- neither do I have the face 🤣 although that's what my mother has done and she has hair similar to me and she does really suit it!x

I think you'd be crackers. Wigs would be hot and sweaty.

Can't you go for one of those keratin treatments that tames unruly hair into sleek gorgeousness. I believe it last 6 months or so.

QueefofSheena · 26/11/2021 15:07

I wore wigs during and after chemo then grew it back quite long. I’ve now got it in a slightly long pixie and wear a variety of wigs for social. Look at Rene of Paris, loads of styles/colours.

Yes I've heard about this actually! I think it might be worth a try as a last resort 🤣 wouldn't get anything like this done just now as I'm BF a 5 month old but thanks for reminding me about this as I have previously enquired about it with a hairdresser.x

Where do you get your wigs from if you don't mind me asking? Hope you're well now Thanks x

Wigs would feel really uncomfortable and they do need maintaining too to keep them looking nice in the long term.

Are you making the most of the hair type you have, or trying to make it look something it isn't naturally like? Does it have to be styled smooth, or could you embrace the texture you have and maybe get a short cut that suits your hair type?

IGotHam · 26/11/2021 15:11

Definitely try a keratin treatment. I have very thick wavy hair which goes nuts in the damp weather. Unruly. I have a keratin blow dry done every six months and it makes my life much easier! Soft hair for the first time in my life 🙂

I'm sure you didn't mean it to be, but your OP is really very insensitive to those who have lost their hair and have no choice in the matter.

You seem to have an idealised view of wigs. They aren't "lovely, easy to manage" unless you spend an absolute fortune. They are itchy, hot, need to be fixed in place and don't really look natural (on me at least) unless you get a very expensive human hair one.

If you want to go bald, go bald but perhaps have a thought how your post reads to women who are bald through no choice of their own - it's actually really hard to deal with. And for those of us who can't afford expensive wigs it's even more shit.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 26/11/2021 15:17

I've got super thick, wild, unruly hair. I had a pixie cut 6 weeks ago and it's the first time my hair has felt manageable. It does grow back fast though so its high maintenance.

tabulahrasa · 26/11/2021 15:18

Um... it kind of sounds like your hair isn’t straight and you’re trying to make it behave like straight hair though?... which is a hell of a lot of work... could you not find a way to work with it rather than against it?

loislovesstewie · 26/11/2021 15:35

I often wish I could do just that! My hair is fine and flyaway, I wish it was thicker as it never looks like I have styled it even when I have. Sigh!

Hi no I didn't mean to cause any offence at all and I apologise if this was the case.x
