Pros and Cons of getting a fringe

Please remind me!

I have had many hairstyles. Pixies, Long and straight, mid length bob. I change it up a lot. Naturally a dark brown with a lot of red - so takes an age to lighten up.

Currently sporting an almost platinum chin length bob - no fringe. Fancying getting a fringe cut in for a change.

for reference I am early 50s, dress quite casually, wear minimal make up..

Attached some photos of what I'd like

Yay or nay?

I’m in sixtys I have Bob with fringe, and I love it, always had fringes

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 26/11/2021 21:26

Don't do it if you have even a hint of curl, every few years I forget and have one cut in then grow it out again ASAP as it curls at the slightest hint of humidity in the air.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 26/11/2021 21:31

I have a cowlick apparently so the fringes I had as a kid never sat properly anyway. And though I like the idea in theory, my fine, oily prone hair just made it look lank really quickly and gave me a spotty forehead. Wondering if it would still have the same effect at 36…
Oh! And it was always slightly too long as a kid and so I ended up developing a twitch out of habit of flicking it out of my eyes. Took years to get rid of it.
Can you tell I’m not pro-fringe?

Libertynan · 28/11/2021 09:22

Did it!

Just a fine wispy fringe but I love it.

Will post a pic later

Good decision OP - have had a fringe virtually my entire life and just wouldn’t look right with one. I’m 55 now. Looking forward to your pic.

LadyEloise1 · 28/11/2021 10:01

Yay, glad you like it @Libertynan
Hoping you'll post a pic of your new fringe.
I'd never get rid of mine.

dementedpixie · 28/11/2021 10:06

I look much better with a fringe and so does dd

CimCardashian · 28/11/2021 10:08

Looking forward to seeing it OP.

I have been cutting in a fringe then growing it out for years and years. The great thing is you can pin them back.

Dozer · 28/11/2021 10:10

Takes over a year to grow out.

I have a light fringe.
It's easy to trim myself.
Go for it! I think it softens the face Smile

crosbystillsandmash · 29/11/2021 10:31

I cut my own fringe during lockdown, it was a brilliant decision and I'd never be without it now.
I look so much better with a fringe, I can't believe the difference when I look at old photos, I look way younger and fresh looking now (and I'm 50!)

It's reasonably high maintenance but definitely worth it!

Strawberryjampot · 29/11/2021 10:37

Glad you like it OP! I’m considering a fringe. Also have bob and like low maintenance hair. Am 49 and the least wrinkly part of my face is my forehead, also my hair is fine and when I’ve had a fringe before I haven’t really liked the way it sat. However, I think a fringe would even out the proportions of my face and I’m wondering if having a heavier fringe than I’ve had before would help. I like my nose but I think my forehead slopes back slightly and makes my nose look quite prominent. But sure can be arsed with the maintenance though.

Strawberryjampot · 29/11/2021 10:38

Am NOT sure can be arsed with maintenance….

I mooted to DH and DD that I was thinking about getting a fringe cut. Both were very much against it. DH had no particular reason but was very definite that he didn't think it was a good idea. DD (15) said it would make me look older and that it would be a "karen" hairstyle Angry

I'm slightly more tempted now, to try to prove them wrong!🤣

JustLikea · 29/11/2021 10:48

Don't do it. It's a pain the proverbial

LHOOQ · 29/11/2021 10:49

I love a fringe. Saw someone my sort of age (late thirties) recently, with shirt hair and a blunt fringe. It was rose gold/pinky toned as well. Thought she looked great.

Really tempted by a fringe myself...

I mean this kindly but please educate your dd about how offensive the term 'karen' is.

That aside, I think a wispy half hearted fringe can be very ageing, I've got a very blunt thick fringe which I think looks better at my (old!) age!

GiantHaystacks2021 · 29/11/2021 10:51

I got a fringe about 3 years ago and it took about 10 years off me.
It can be a nuisance because it grows out in, seemingly a matter of days, but I look a lot less haggard with it.

Redcrayons · 29/11/2021 10:54

@eggandchips37

Pros: they look lovely Cons: they are annoying as fuck

That's about it really Grin

I concur.
Strawberryjampot · 29/11/2021 10:57

My friend Karen just got a fab blunt cut bob with a heavy fringe. She looks brilliant.

I hope you are discouraging your daughter of using this sexist and ageist term
