Long hair to short hair - will I regret it?!?

ImSoMagical · 23/11/2021 23:06

50 something with long hair. Had it down my back for so long as an adult because when I was younger mum always cut our hair short and I was always mistaken for a boy 😆. I don't have time to wash/dry/style and inevitably wear it up with a clip or in a ponytail. Any advice or positive long to short transitions?!?

How short are you planning to go? I've chopped mine off twice in my life and regretted it both times, even a bob is much harder to style than long hair, although it's easier to wash and dry, have you got a pic you like?

Imtoooldforallthis · 24/11/2021 06:43

I'm having the same dilemma although mine is shoulder length, due to have it cut today and was sure what i wanted told adult DD who was adamamant I would look awful and it will age me so now having a wobble.

GoodnightGrandma · 24/11/2021 06:46

I’d have it cut in stages. Go for just below the shoulders first, so it still looks long to you but is more manageable. Then above the shoulders, and so on.
Many people regret going straight for the chop.

rrhuth · 24/11/2021 06:48

It is only hair, I've gone short-long-short-long over and over, it always grows back!

Agree do it in steps if you've got worries.

DollyPartonisabeauty · 24/11/2021 06:49

Go for it! I felt free when I had the chop and it’s fabulous at this time of year wearing roll necks etc.
You could do what I did the first time and go just above shoulder length so that it’s just long enough to tie back in a comforting ponytail and then the next time you could go even shorter if you feel that it suits you?

Either way it’ll grow.

EIIa · 24/11/2021 06:49

Having chopped well over a foot of hair off twice now without people even noticing, I’ve realised that all anybody ever notices is whether it’s above or below your shoulders! However shorter hair definitely makes your face look younger! No brainier! I’ve just had my hair cut to a blunt bob slightly below my shoulders from waist length. Still swishy, more bouncy and looks thicker but I still feel like I have hair and haven’t been scalped. Go for it!

Stellaris22 · 24/11/2021 06:52

Just gone from shoulder length to completely shaved on one side (undercut on the other side). I’m loving it and getting lots of compliments. But it’s a style I’ve been wanting for ages as I’m fed up of unmanageable thick hair.

But as others say, go shorter in stages. It’ll grow back but it’ll still be a style you have to live with till it does.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 24/11/2021 06:52

Growing m8 e out again at 60+, but I like a change from time to time and it was much easier and tidier short!

HelloDulling · 24/11/2021 06:55

How short? A short crop needs washing/drying/styling every day, it may not take long but you have to do it. Keep it at a length you can still tie back if you are short on time.

PlumManor · 24/11/2021 06:58

I’ve done it a couple of times, age 55. I did it over three cuts, so should length, choppy bob, then proper short.

I loved it both times, and when I tired of it, I went back to choppy bob, them shoulder length which is where I’m at now.

I do find when it’s longer it does took tatty easy, even though it’s cut every seven weeks. So it’s back to choppy bob again on Friday.

Needsomethingtoread · 24/11/2021 07:25

I’m 40 and cut mine to shoulder length and it looks much better. It’s thicker and healthier and I don’t spend much time on it now as I don’t dry it, I just scrunch it with a bit of water to give it about of movement.

nanbread · 24/11/2021 07:30

If you get a standard or blunt bob, it will still need a fair bit of styling to look good (unless you happen to have eg poker straight hair, or curly / wavy hair that dries really well).

UNLESS that is, you find a magical hairdresser who can cut it to look good when it dries naturally.

Which I did find, but they're 120 miles away and it costs £100 for a cut.

In 30 years of haircuts and countless hair stylists they're the only one who can do it.

What IS good about a bob however is that it's quicker to wash, dry and straighten / curl.

ImSoMagical · 24/11/2021 08:33

Thanks all, I fancy a jaw length choppy bob, kind of cross between Debbie Harry and Dempsey and Makepeace 😄 I don't suit 'sleek' styles.

I'm the same. My hair grows really slowly so if I hated it is would mean take years to grow back. I'd cut it to shoulder length perhaps
nordica · 24/11/2021 11:26

Short hair can actually need much more styling and effort, as you can't just tie it into a ponytail/quick up-do.

I've had everything from short pixie with a shaved side to very long - it helps that my hair grows quickly. So I would say do it, as you can always grow it back if you find it isn't working for you. I had a pixie short cut last year (didn't like it) and now I have a short bob already.

Cam22 · 24/11/2021 12:48

Don’t have it cut short or you will regret it.

Cam22 · 24/11/2021 12:50

I think I short hair is ageing and that’s something you need to consider.

RatherBeRiding · 24/11/2021 12:55

Mid 60s - just gone for a very short layered bob and absolutely love it. It's very low maintenance and doesn't need re-styling between washes. I find it very flattering! Much more so than the longer styles I used to favour However, I think finding a good hairdresser who isn't going to cut according to perceived age is the key!

lindyloo57 · 24/11/2021 12:59

I have cut my hair only twice to a shorter style, and hated it , I long hair as a child, had it cut short when I had my first child at 16, then when I had my first grandchild in my late 30s, both times regretted it, I'm 61.

lindyloo57 · 24/11/2021 12:59

ImperfectTents · 24/11/2021 13:00

I have short hair. I get it cut well and there is no need to style or fuss. I wash it and move on. I regularly get complements on my hair. If you want shorter hair go for it, it does grow

sageandbasil · 24/11/2021 13:00

I had hair past my boobs then went to just above my shoulders. Absolutely love it

Divebar2021 · 24/11/2021 13:01

I just had mine cut from below shoulders to short ( above ears). It’s not ageing… it’s considerably more flattering and modern that what I had. My hair was thinning horribly though so didn’t look great down. It doesn’t need washing every day and takes about 5 minutes to style compared to 30 minutes. My tip is to go to a great hairstylist who you trust and has cut your hair before. Show lots of pictures and be realistic about what your hair will do. Sometimes a messy cut can take more work than you think.

Divebar2021 · 24/11/2021 13:02

I just went into the office with my new style this week and have had various people I barely know come over to say how much they like it.

MeetMeAtOurSpot · 24/11/2021 13:04

I’ve always found mine takes more work when I’ve gone mad and cut it. Far easier to pull it into a pony or clip it than spend forever properly styling it so I don’t look like a troll.

I also look like my brother when I have it short short!
