Long hair to short hair - will I regret it?!?

50 something with long hair. Had it down my back for so long as an adult because when I was younger mum always cut our hair short and I was always mistaken for a boy 😆. I don't have time to wash/dry/style and inevitably wear it up with a clip or in a ponytail. Any advice or positive long to short transitions?!?

@ImSoMagical

Thanks all, I fancy a jaw length choppy bob, kind of cross between Debbie Harry and Dempsey and Makepeace 😄 I don't suit 'sleek' styles.
Whatever you do, make sure the person cutting your hair knows exactly what you want as once it is gone.. it's gone :)
Hollywolly1 · 24/11/2021 13:45

I think get it cut just above the shoulders for now and then you can choose to go up an inch or 2 and I think you will be delighted, maybe no shorter to start with in case you are disappointed and without layers as it will be so easy to keep

foreverandalways · 24/11/2021 13:48

I have cut it from long to extremely short twice and regretted it both times....also gone from brunette to all over natural grey and regretted that also...both never again...it takes such a long time to grow back and never the same

I have short hair and love it. My hairdresser at the time was very cautious and gave me some dreadful in-between cuts before I changed hairdresser, had it cut short as I'd wanted to in the first place and loved it. The only thing I find is I have to have it cut every 4-5 weeks or it looks tatty. But washing/styling is a doddle.

That sort of cut needs a good stylist and will be high maintenance.

Also, Debbie Harry and Glynis Barber were blessed with beautiful bone structure. Maybe you have but I haven't.

Had a blonde bob in the 80s. I was constantly mistaken for other women

Coffeepot72 · 24/11/2021 13:57

Every time I've gone short I've grown it back to my shoulders again. There is clearly a reason for this!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 24/11/2021 13:59

I'm 60 and have waist length hair and there is no way I'm cutting it. I have 6 weekly trims and it's blond and pink, looks fab.

Cocolapew · 24/11/2021 13:59

A bob isn't short hair, its just shorter than you're used to Smile

Beamur · 24/11/2021 14:05

I've gone from jaw length layered bob, through medium and long bobs to long and back again several times! The easiest by far is either long or short layered bob. Long bob is the faffiest length but a good intermediate as you work between the lengths. I never tie mine back though. I reckon if you constantly tie it back, get it chopped off.
If you don't like it, it was grow back.

rainybowday · 24/11/2021 14:05

I cut mine from waist length to shoulder and ended up in tears everytime I looked at it. It didn't look bad but I hadn't realised quite how attached I was to my hair. I like the way it swished beside me and generally sat straight every time after a wash with minimal effort .
I am now growing it back. It did look nice though so that's a positive and if I'd have kept it short I suppose I'd be putting more effort to go to a salon and look nicer more regularly Grin

rainybowday · 24/11/2021 14:06

@Shehasadiamondinthesky sounds awesome

PenelopeVonDelius · 24/11/2021 14:07

I prefer my hair just above shoulder length. Any longer and it starts to look ratty and I looks as if I have no neck. I do like long hair on other people though.

I've never really regretted having hair cut shorter, but it's a pita to grow out. So worth bearing in mind.

TiredButDancing · 24/11/2021 14:16

I recently went from long to short (proper short) and I love it. It can't be ignored and you can't just tie it up when you're having a bad hair day, but on the plus side, mine takes no more than 5 minutes to sort out in the morning. I also went much darker and the colour now varies from a rich brown/mahogany to a more neutral mid-brown.

TiredButDancing · 24/11/2021 14:18

I forgot the most important thing though - I had to look for a hairdresser who would do it. My original hairdresser refused. My new one took a few goes to get it right. It is WEIRD how people don't like cutting hair short. And it's not crazy short either... Pic attached.

Stellaris22 · 24/11/2021 14:22

I’ve just had mine shaved on one side, it just needs a bit of wax and I’m done. Had so many compliments and forgotten how much I love really short hair.

CambsAlways · 24/11/2021 14:24

Go for it love! It will look amazing

senorafridgidaire · 24/11/2021 14:25

Having the same dilemma here. I've always had long hair but peri-menopause means it's getting a bit thinner and straggly and I am now worried about looking a bit like Neil from the Young Ones. It's in a bun or a ponytail 99% of the time now anyway as it just doesn't look as nice down as it used to.

I've been doing a lot of looking at other people's hair and am thinking of just above shoulders length, so kind of a long bob. It'll be the shortest it's been in years though and I am scared! I think it will make it look a lot healthier, but it takes ages to grow so if I hate it I'm going to be stuck with it for a while.

CambsAlways · 24/11/2021 14:26

Lovely colour TiredButDancing, what is the name of the colours t

CambsAlways · 24/11/2021 14:26

Colourant

TiredButDancing · 24/11/2021 14:27

I really couldn't say. that is a slightly old picture I THINK It was taken during our last lockdown when I had to go back to box colour. I tried a slightly red colour and it was a disaster so had to do an over colour of more brown to tone it down. From memory, this picture was taken to show my BF that I'd successfully removed the weird orange/red colour!! Grin

Changecountetextraordinaire · 24/11/2021 14:31

Just gone from below shoulders to really short - absolutely love new cut, wash in shower every day, a quick ruffle through with fingers and leave it to dry on its own. I'll have to have it cut more frequently, probably every 8-10 weeks, but as hairdresser only charges £20, it won't break the bank.

Inthesameboatatmo · 24/11/2021 14:38

I regrettably did it at the beginning of the year will never do it again.

Beautiful3 · 24/11/2021 14:57

I did this once. I instantly regretted it. I'd never do it again. My hair grows so slowly too.

Iamahippo · 24/11/2021 15:32

Do it n stages if your unsure. My hair was bum length for years , then waist length. I have gradually cut it shorter over the past couple of years and not regret it. I thi k if I had gone from very long to short hair I would have but doing it in stages, you get used to it. I'm lucky hair hair does grow very quickly though.

squooz · 24/11/2021 17:57

My 13 year old started giving me a no 8 clipper cut as a fundraiser and at nearly 15 she is now my regular stylist Grin I haven’t regretted it and also makes it easy to do home hair colouring so I can still have fun with my look.
