I can recommend Horticulture for food. It's amazing 🤩. Clothes wise, I went in the summer and wore a knee length black dress, denim jacket and wedges, so dressy but not as dressed up as some people get for a night out in Newcastle.

PomegranateLindor · 20/11/2021 21:51

Geisha - beautiful Aisian fusion restaurant. It's essential to book though.

You will need a coat though, despite our reputation Grin

PomegranateLindor · 20/11/2021 21:55

Also Riley's fish shack in Tynemouth, since you have a car. You will need to dress warm for this one though as it's on the beach. It's not formal so just be comfortable. There is also a market in Tynemouth at the Metro station on weekend days which is well worth a visit.

whatever1980 · 20/11/2021 22:15

Thanks for the suggestions! That's the food sorted!

I'd you go to Tynemouth, pay a visit to common ilke vintabe and designer clothing and reminisce sweet shop.

Oatcakeandchutney · 20/11/2021 22:27

Ouseburn just along the quayside is kinda cool. Some nice pubs, amazing bakery and one of the best ice cream shop. Good for an afternoon stroll along the Tyne, but totally different vibe to town centre.
Second Tynemouth for drinks or Whitley Bay Spanish City.

JBFletcher90 · 20/11/2021 22:31

Babucho on the quayside does lovely food - particularly fond of their roast Sunday dinners if you’ll be in town over the weekend and have a chance to pop in.

Theatre royal always has good shows on so worth having a look to see if anything takes your fancy.

Fenwicks Christmas windows is always popular, as well as visiting Mason & Rye inside Fenwicks for coffee and cake.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/11/2021 22:36

Yy to ouseburn. I'm local to Newcastle and Ouseburn is my favourite- Brinkburn St Brewery and The Kiln are next door to one another and very nice.

Not sure if it's up your street but local to them is a place called Ghetto Golf - it's an over 18s crazy golf that's like nothing I've ever seen before. They do drinks service as you play, and each hole is completely themed and it's really very entertaining.

I agree with those suggesting Tynemouth too. Crusoes down on the beach serves nice food and hot drinks. They also do a great market at the Metro station on a Sunday. Its massive.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/11/2021 22:39

If you like Thai food, theres a place in the city centre called Zapp. Its kitted out like a street food place, and the food is delcious. The cocktails are great too, and it's veryreasonably priced.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/11/2021 22:42

Clothes wise it's pretty much anything goes. I was in Newcastle for drinks last night and there was women in mini dresses and dms and other women in trainers and "vintage" (aka 90s) Nike sweatshirts. And vast swathes of combinations of all other clothes in between.

AwkwardSquad · 21/11/2021 07:17

Grainger Market is fun to visit for street food for lunch on one of the days. Dabbawal next to the Theatre Royal does tasty Indian food, influenced by Mumbai street food. The Tyneside cinema is great and their cafe-bar on the ground floor has a good vibe.

Visit Baltic on the Gateshead quayside too - for the views, if you’re not into the art. You could do that then meander along the quayside on the Newcastle side to Ouseburn.

Youaremypenguin · 21/11/2021 07:36

Dress wise, you get to choose anything is good. Places in Stack are fun on a nightime for a more relaxed venue. The Theatre Royal is beautiful maybe you could go to the theatre one night. Sage Gateshead also have loads of things/concerts/performances happening and is on the river, easy to walk to. Newcastle Town Hall also a good venue for events, shows and concerts Spend a day at Beamish Museum! One of the best in the country. It's outdoor, wrap up, comfortable shoes, car journey(10 mins away). Well worth it, it's a very full day so get there early and expect a full day.

Visit the Baltic Art Gallery and see the bridge tilt at 12pm, lights up on a night. You need to walk the quayside at night just because it's beautiful after dark. Fenwick Window is a Christmas must and if you're coming when the Christmas market is on that's also fun after dark. You can spend a day just looking round the shops.

Tynemouth is a lovely town and good if you want some North Sea air (blustery, layers needed at the moment). Lunch at Riley's (try and book ahead, it's popular!).

Lookup Gibside Park to get away from the crowds. Museum of the North and Discovery Museum, Laing art gallery for wet days. Angel of the North on your way to or from Beamish (30 minute stop max).

HarrietOh · 21/11/2021 07:43

Broad Chare on quayside does lovely Sunday lunch.
By The River - they have street food market on a weekend and a lovely place to see abs have a few drinks by the river
Everyone loves The Botanist for drinks under the dome!

tigerbear · 21/11/2021 07:51

Peace & Loaf restaurant in Jesmond is my favourite place in the country to eat out. It’s booked weeks in advance, however, so can be tricky to get a table.

Tynesider007 · 21/11/2021 12:31

I would start with a drink at the The Pitcher and Piano by the millennium bridge, stunning views of the river, then mosey along to the Ouse Burn "scene" , Free Trade is a right laugh, like going back in time 50 years, stunning views of the river again. The Tyne pub next, often they have bands on, the Cluny too but that's a bit too studenty for me. Cumberland is great, technically in Byker but still part of the Ouse Burn. Don't visit real Byker.

If you like live music it might be an idea to see what's on, loads most weekends from arena size down to tiny pub size gigs.

I would avoid the Bigg Market and the so called Diamond strip.

I know I am biased but I think Newcastle is the greatest little city on earth.

Cactu · 21/11/2021 12:42

Cook House in Ouseburn is another great little restaurant. Had a couple of very memorable meals there.

Newcastle is still a place where people like to dress up at any time of day which makes for good people watching but it’s not universal and you’ll be fine in anything.

whatever1980 · 21/11/2021 22:14

Wow thank you everyone! Really looking forward to this visit!!

The food hall at Fenwicks (good for Christmas shopping!), it also has a few really nice places to eat. Dat Bar is great for pizza, and the pasta at Zucchini is out of this world.

As a native geordie lass, i know Newcastle has a reputation for tiny skirts and no coats but that’s by no means the norm - dress however you feel comfortable!

BigHeartyTruffle · 21/11/2021 22:26

And enjoy your trip to this canny belta city 😊

doadeer · 21/11/2021 22:27

Book Rileys it's great in Tynemouth - really delicious fancy fish and chips - it's been reviewed by guardian etc.

If you like yoga do a class at Jasmine Yoga next to priory castle.

Lots of bars in Tynemouth too or old pubs on north shields quayside. Depends what your style is!

Laquila · 21/11/2021 22:46

Ahh this thread has made me nostalgic for Newcastle and its lovely people, albeit the last time I was there it was Gotham Town, Chase and Baja Beach Club 😱 (I'm not proud!!)

tigerbear · 23/11/2021 16:31

@Laquila me too! And Tuxedo Royale with the revolving dance floor 🤣

EllaPaella · 23/11/2021 17:44

I second Dat Bar - we were there last weekend and I had the most amazing traditional carbonara.
Riley's is lovely but you will smell of fire-pit smoke for days afterwards Grin
I also agree you can wear pretty much whatever you like, anything goes. People do get pretty dressed up in the city centre on a weekend night though.
The Stack in the city centre is lovely on a weekend, lively, laid back with live music and a great variety of street food - definitely worth a visit.

whatever1980 · 25/11/2021 22:05

Thanks everyone! Where is Dat Bar?

OP posts:
EllaPaella · 26/11/2021 07:07

On Market Street, right in city centre not far from Monument.
