If I want to never wear high heels again, what do I wear for going out?

Day to day I wear trainers or flattish boots all the time, but if I wear a dress I almost always wear heels because my legs are short and dumpy.

But I don't want to have sore feet all night and not be able to dance and fall over and break my finger on the way home any more.

What do all of you who don't wear heels wear instead?

A nice pair of dark suede knee high (or over the knee) boots.

Time40 · 19/11/2021 14:39

Dainty flat pointy shoes.

pictish · 19/11/2021 14:42

I’ve just bought these. I’m wearing them now, letting them break in. They are gorgeous.

P.s I got them in the black but they are lovely in every shade.

pictish · 19/11/2021 14:48

I have never really worn heels. On the couple of occasions I have they have introduced me to a world of PAIN. No outfit is worth that.

I do wedges, they are ok. For partying, possible dancing a block heel like the boots in my link…or flats.

No idea what style you like or budget but R&B dress flats section might give you ideas:

OTT flats. This kind of thing. When I was pregnant I had a good pair of pointed toe mules that I wore everywhere and now I'm all about the glam flats.

@pictish A lot of the Celtic & Co stuff posted on these boards is an acquired taste at best, but those are beautiful! I'm very tempted but they're a world away from my normal style so not sure I'd get the use out of them. Do they work with dresses or just skinnies/leggings?

OP, depends on the outfit. If it's a mini dress usually black tights with chelsea boots, DMs, or these. For a formal midi or maxi I do tend to go for heels, but block heeled sandals can work too and are much comfier.

As a doc boot wearing scruff I say the biker boots are perfect with a dress. Hth.

I got a beaut dress from Sezane for this winter’s festivities and social stuff. The boots look great with it.

I like them but they look like country living wellies, not going out in town bootsGrin

fairlygoodmother · 19/11/2021 15:32

thank you all for these great suggestions. Pictish, those boots are lovely but I have very chunky calves so they are not for me. All fur I love those blue flats!

I've got silver trainers that are surprisingly versatile.

Or chunky boots with a short dress

Channel the 17yos. They don't wear heels no matter how dressed up they are. This feels like one small progress for women in recent years while everything else has gone backwards.

They are lovely casual walking boots but I can’t imagine going for a night on the town in them or putting them with a cocktail dress.

17 year olds really don’t go many places where you need to be dressy and no grown woman should be emulating a child.

To be honest women still wear heels. My daughter has had to go to a few corporate dinners lately and has worn dresses, and small heels, as has every woman there, other than a few in ballet pumps, but the younger ones all wore a heel. She’s 24.

DoodleBelle · 19/11/2021 15:40

Pointed flats!

pictish · 19/11/2021 15:47

Blunty they are not walking boots to my mind. They are casual though. I don’t think I’ve ever worn a cocktail dress. Is my dress a cocktail dress? I don’t even know.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 19/11/2021 15:47

I'm on a roll now. How about heavily embroidered smoking slippers or mules?

I feel like there's something a bit louche about the smoking slippers, which I love.

Tbf OP didn't actually specific shoes to wear with a cocktail dress or an outfit for a corporate dinner. I'd happily wear the C&Co boots to go out for dinner and drinks, which is still going out. They're absolutely not walking boots or wellies IMO, you wouldn't catch me walking the dog in heels like that.

Agree, I’d wear them round the shops, or down the pub for dinner or drinks, or out to a friends. The op is talking about going out dancing, so I would not wear them for a nightclub or dance to be honest.
pictish · 19/11/2021 16:53

I will be wearing my boots out out. I have got to be able to relax in my clothes and be comfortable. They're the only ones I've seen that so appeal.

Interested to know what other posters would wear instead of heels. I'll never be persuaded into a pair so all ideas are welcome. I could have written the OP.

goose1964 · 19/11/2021 22:11

I find flats not smart enough or they look like ones your posh great aunt would wear. Pointed flats don't work on my rounded toes. I'd find a pair of mid height helps and wear those

VaginaRegina · 19/11/2021 22:18

My feet are completely mashed (arthritis) and I can really only wear Birks or Hotters. I won't go the full granny in Hotters, but I do have a couple of pairs of trainers (my favourites are silver) which aren't too Sunday Express.

For truly formal occasions over the last few years, I have worn Gabor or Ecco flat pumps. Still been in agony after a couple of hours.

BackBackBack · 19/11/2021 22:26

I was at a black tie event recently and most women were in heels. Although there were a number in dress flats, which was nice to see.

I'd say that flats are still in the minority when going black tie (I do a lot of corporate schmooze!), but they are becoming more common - the number of women wearing flats seems to increase each time. I gave up heels about four years ago - decided they were too bloody uncomfortable and not worth the faff.

I have a beautiful pair of black suede pointed toe flats and a small selection of clip on shoe jewels to dress them up from Amazon.
