Big boobs and coat rules

As in, what you can’t wear if you have a larger size bust. I’ve been searching for a new smart coat for years, every winter I give up and either wear my old one or just one of my waterproofs. I really want a lovely new wool coat, but all the advice says to avoid double breasted, pockets, high necks etc etc.
I’m only short, and already struggle with sleeve length. Getting the coat to fasten over my chest often means trying a bigger size, which is then too big everywhere else. I’ve seen some lovely ones on Yumi, but they are mostly double breasted and I’m just wondering if they are really that unflattering? They look like they would actually hang better, and not gape as much?
I’ve also seen some lovely faux fur ones, again something I usually avoid due to the pounds adding qualities!
Would love to know peoples thoughts on this.

Have you considered a wrap coat?

Cydonia · 17/11/2021 22:40

I’m not sure about them, I think I’d feel like I was wearing my dressing gown!

Hmm, I don’t know, that style just isn’t really me I don’t think. Bit too sophisticated?!

What would you wear ideally OP? If you didn't have the boobs.

I have a similar problem to you and i have found that it's best to avoid coats which are too short or coats which have a defined waist. Because my boobs take up fabric and shortens the coat further and the waist ends up almost under my arm pits Hmm

Exception to this is if the waist is defined simply by and bed and you can move the belt loops down.

I have to say most of my outdoors time is on the school run and i just need to be warm so i'm in a basic bum length white puffer jacket with big fur trim hood which has a strong zip which just squishes my boobs into submission! HmmGrin

Laiste · 17/11/2021 23:25

end bed should say a belt Hmm

I once got very inspired by a Parisian Look thread here and spent a lot on a lovely navy Hobbs trench thinking i was going to look tres chic.

No.
Tres sack of spuds unfortunately. I actually look better in the puffer!

Cydonia · 17/11/2021 23:31

Yeah, generally on the school run, days out with the kids and dog walks it’s one of many waterproof or other casual type of coats.
I would just like something smarter for the rare occasions I go out somewhere nice Smile My current “posh” coat is an old military style one from Topshop, must be 15 years old now though. I do like the more traditional style I think, fitted, v neck ( but can be fastened higher ) belt is good. About mid thigh or slightly longer?

Interesting! I’ve a lovely Joules puffer, not too chunky but as ever the sleeves are too long.

I avoid double breasted. I think they are unflattering on a curvey woman

SirenSays · 18/11/2021 02:01

Get the faux fur! Mine won't close over my boobs but it's so soft and warm that I don't care.

BurnedToast · 18/11/2021 06:26

I would have thought a single row of buttons with a v neck. I have the same problem but love my puffa so much that I'm happy to walk around looking like a duvet on legs.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 18/11/2021 06:34

I am cursed with the oversized bags if misery, nothing ever looks good on me.

I normally get the coats you mean and leave them open, using a scarf for colder days, it's not ideal, but the only way I can wear them.

Weatherwax13 · 18/11/2021 06:36

The best style for me is a shawl collar, wrap style. I'm an F cup.
I've bought two brilliant wool ones in the past from the States in the Black Friday or Boxing Day Sale at Macys. Half price both times from memory and really excellent quality.
I'm away from home or I'd go in the wardrobe and find the brands.

Weatherwax13 · 18/11/2021 06:37

Oh, and obviously I meant online! I didn't buy them in New York in person. Sadly!

Swing coat? I too am generous of chest and have a very flattering coat much like this (mine is old). This one comes in different colours. And yes to getting a tailor to sort the sleeves if necessary - our local dry cleaner does it.

honeylemonteaforme · 18/11/2021 08:42

Think the single breasted style people mean is a crombie

Personally I'd avoid wrap (sack of spuds with string) or double breasted (too much fabric) though I have a good cocoon coat

MintMe · 18/11/2021 08:44

I second @StCharlotte - I've just bought this from Hobbes and it's lovely. Even buttoned right up it doesn't look too bad.

Bakedbeanhead · 18/11/2021 08:54

Hi OP
I’ve got a larger chest and have just ordered this from fat face. I tried the size 14 on in the shop and it looked ok actually, quite flattering.
You can normally find a discount code as well somewhere on line.

I feel your pain though, just had to put a lovely navy coat in the loft as I have changed shape (menopause and lockdown) and it won’t fit over my boobs ! Can’t bear to part with it Grin

ILoveShula · 18/11/2021 09:10

@Cydonia, get the sleeves shortened. If you find someone good at alterations, it will be a gamechanger

slipperyeel · 18/11/2021 09:13

Try a Ted baker wrap coat

Cydonia · 18/11/2021 09:21

Thank you for all the suggestions, I love how helpful everyone is on here! Sleeve shortening is definitely a good idea, even if it’s expensive it would be worth it. I’ll have a look at them all later.

This is rather lovely from H&M, I'm tempted - www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0974284001.html

(Short with H cup boobs so it will look rather different on me!)

Also tempted by some of their cape style coats, and the one @NiellyNoFive posted is beautiful Smile
