Big boobs and coat rules

As in, what you can’t wear if you have a larger size bust. I’ve been searching for a new smart coat for years, every winter I give up and either wear my old one or just one of my waterproofs. I really want a lovely new wool coat, but all the advice says to avoid double breasted, pockets, high necks etc etc.
I’m only short, and already struggle with sleeve length. Getting the coat to fasten over my chest often means trying a bigger size, which is then too big everywhere else. I’ve seen some lovely ones on Yumi, but they are mostly double breasted and I’m just wondering if they are really that unflattering? They look like they would actually hang better, and not gape as much?
I’ve also seen some lovely faux fur ones, again something I usually avoid due to the pounds adding qualities!
Would love to know peoples thoughts on this.

@Cydonia, ask around if you want alterations done, and if you go to someone you don't know, get them to do a not-favourite-expensive coat first. Or learn how to do it yourself.
Things like shortening jeans are easy

KatyS36 · 18/11/2021 09:55

That is beautiful, I have just ordered. Thank you!

AnnieSnap · 18/11/2021 12:37

@ChiefInspectorParker I actually think shaped at the waist works really well with big boobs!

goose1964 · 18/11/2021 12:42

I have a double breasted one and it looks really smart on. However it's a good brand and is well tailored so it narrows to the waist avoiding any boxy look.

AnnieSnap · 18/11/2021 12:44

@knackeredcat that’s a great coat. I only started shopping at H&M this year. Previously, I’d had the impression that they only sold rubbish, but I’ve found they have some great stuff.

ParishSpinster · 18/11/2021 12:47

I wear whatever coat I like. I know that having a more fitted waist looks good, but I've had nice double breasted coats and nice high neck ones too.

I wear them buttoned up too. With a lovely scarf if I feel like I look a bit like a matron aunt.

At the end of the day, wear what you really love and screw the "rules".

See, if you're happy to leave it undone (with scarf) then you can get away with anything really. I have a black thin wool coat with a gorgeous big black faux collar which comes down the front of the coat to where the buttons start. If i do it up the fur puffs the size of my chest up even more. If i leave it swinging it looks fine.

I feel like the problems with boobs really only start when you do the coat up.

DDs school is on the edge of our village with miles of nothing beyond it. Beautiful views obvs but blinking freezing at this time of year when winds comes down off the hills. I need my coat/s done up!

As pp says when you're staying all cozy in a puffer with your hood up you don't give a damn what you look like Grin

I am petite with a bigger bust, I've tried so many over the years, but found the best style is a wrap coat, got mine from John Lewis last winter sale, I find the wrap style is more generous in the bust line.

JaceLancs · 18/11/2021 17:29

I’m short and hour glass shape (currently 12-14 but dieting)
Anything with a belt or wrap style makes me look like a sack
Double breasted or funnel neck turns me into a box with legs
I’ve found raglan sleeves either straight or slightly a line - with 3-4 buttons works best
In fact I have a favourite jaeger coat which I have in lots of different colours will try and find a picture of something similar

Sleeves like this

hazelgrey · 18/11/2021 17:40

Sorry nothing useful to add but you have reminded me that I bought what I thought was a beautiful padded long length coat for my son to tell me I looked like a sausage roll

It went to the charity shop

FancySomeChips · 18/11/2021 17:51

Double breasted and a big/wide scarf to hide/distract.
Single buttoned anything gaps on me at my boobs and makes me look a mess.

The coat or the child? Wink

So many helpful replies, thank you all! I think I’m leaning towards the crombie style, or single breasted A line shape, and maybe the less buttons the better? I have a waterproof from Didrikson that is that slightly A line shape and that is surprisingly flattering, though it does squash my boobs a bit.
I’m not really a scarf person, though I wish I was. I have a short neck so no matter how I tie it I always feel hot and strangled. Not fastening the coat sounds like a good solution but I don’t think it would work for me. I always have to fasten things, even cardigans as the wind always catches them and they never sit right, fall off my shoulders etc. I’m just not a chic person I don’t think!

Christina Hendricks has large bosom and I think she looks great in this coat , in good girls

@Nimle ah she does, but she is gorgeous and has a lovely hourglass figure, she’d look good in anything! I’m short with oversized boobs, a fat midriff and slim hips, it’s a strange shape! I do like the retro look though.

Cydonia · 18/11/2021 22:03

Though I was thinking of her in Mad Men when I say retro!

Try Bravissimo they do a few clothes for us larger busted ladies where the whole dress/top/coat are the same high street size but extra material in the front.

PenCreed · 19/11/2021 09:45

Be careful with the "fewer buttons the better" - I bought a coat from Jigsaw that had a v-neck and then two buttons. As a result it gaped over my bust as soon as I moved my arms! I ended up getting a local tailor to add a third button slightly further up and now it sits much better. (If you're in SE London then I can recommend her!)

Cydonia · 19/11/2021 14:35

Ah ok, typical! Think it’s going to be trial and error. I have tried Bravissimo clothes but never been that impressed with the quality and fit for the price. They also seem to be discontinuing the range now.
