Can we have a chat thread for this?
Tips and ideas, blog and podcast recommendations and latest finds?

I'll start. I think 80% of my stuff is secondhand, from charity shops eBay and vinted. I've got more into this in last five years and never go in fast fashion shops. I feel a bit ill and overwhelmed if I do now.
If I do need to buy new I try to find a company that is ethical and made in Britain.

I've got really into maintenance and repair as well. I love watching a film while I debobble and darn knitwear.

Recent efforts, I had some nice black fine wool trousers but they were too loose and unflattering on thighs, I've improvised and put in my own pleats at the top and pleased with how they came out.

I wanted a black polo neck after I saw some women looking very stylish in a black and white 1960s film and found a perfect one the next day in the charity shop: lambswool, old m and s, made in Britain.

I love this website

I am extremely keen on ebay and get some great finds on there. But delighted to hear about people's experiences with Thrift Plus and Vnted and so on.

madamceladon · 26/01/2022 17:22

Well done @evilharpy !

@riverpebbles I've done a lot of second hand shopping on eBay and vinted,
I find vinted quicker simpler and cheaper than ebay, but there is less range and the search filters aren't as precise so you can't always find something you want. I use both ❤️

I just got the most amazing find in a local charity shop. A The Kooples navy leather jacket, in absolutely immaculate condition for £20. They are Selling on eBay secondhand for £100+ and originally over £400 on The Kooples website. It fits perfectly. No signs of wear inside or out. Im shocked.

I'm beside myself with excitement!

That is an excellent find

Well done @evilharpy and @timestheyarechanging! That jacket is just, WOW!

Struck lucky in a flying visit to my favourite British Red Cross shop today - a pair of these 7 for All Mankind jeans for £5:

www.7forallmankind.co.uk/en_en/the-skinny-b-air-duchess-50249.html

and a beautiful, rust coloured, baby alpaca/wool mix jumper from 'des Petits Hauts' (a French brand I'd not heard of before) for £4.75. Similar knits are retailing at around £150 on their website, so that was a pleasant surprise! It's a wee bit bobbly, but I've gone over it with my debobbling device and it's as good as new.

madamceladon · 13/02/2022 17:22

So proud of you @timestheyarechanging

I would be insufferable if I'd found that 😁

Dying of envy, @timestheyarechanging

I've been mostly on Vinted, collecting Sweaty Betty leggings - four pairs, all in excellent condition, for roughly the price of half of one new pair.

A pair of Grenson Bridgets, brand new in box, for £90 Inc postage (birthday money). Fit perfectly and SO comfortable.

And a long cashmere maxi dress with silk lining from a posh French brand - NWT, £20.

Need to stop buying bargains before I bankrupt myself Grin

Cookie79 · 14/02/2022 09:43

@timestheyarechanging very envious- what a find!

Hoping this works as I’m not sure I’ve ever posted a photo on here but got this dress from a charity shop in Blackpool centre - Oasis and £5. Been wearing it on my office days with black tights and brown knee high boots.

Also not clothes but found a candlestick (candelabra?) in the Barnados warehouse shop. Bloody heavy - ties in with the gold if the wallpaper ahd the mustard below the dado and at £8 I had to have it. I feel like I should be wafting around the house at night with it, with Celine Dion or Meatloaf power ballad blaring. Also a wind machine for atmosphere.

Trying to revive this.
Anyone familiar with a vintage USA brand called Pendleton?
I came across them through searching vintage eBay and found their history interesting.
Started late 19th C in Portland Oregon, went into men and womens wear early 20th C and seem to still have active woollen mills and made in Pacific Northwest.
I am looking at a beautiful grey 100% wool blazer by them on eBay.

@Floisme

Same here! Both my mum and aunt were seamstresses but I did not want to do or have anything to do with "Women's work". Practically sob whenever I pass the many many material shops on the Goldhawk Road! I can only just about sew on a loose button.

madamceladon · 30/03/2022 17:20

@Deathraystare I bet you could still learn! Continue the legacy!

Hello @madamceladon yes, love Pendleton! I have a fitted jacket found in a vintage shop and a pair of the Pendleton/Dr Martens collaboration boots (the latter are wonderfully warm but squeak a bit 🤣). I do see Pendleton popping ip on eBay quite a bit.
