Coloured tights?

I don't wear black, my clothes are mostly autumnal colours. So black tights would look out of place.
I usually wear thick nude tights, but as we move into winter I'm wondering if coloured tights might be a good option, e.g a multi coloured skirt, brown ankle boots and maybe burgundy or brown tights.
They look amazing on younger people IMO, but at 40 will I look a bit too hippy or try hard? Does anyone else wear coloured tights past their 30s if your look isn't at all Boho?

OP I only wear coloured tights. Mostly navy and burgandy, but some brown, teal and mustard. I always match them to my shoes/boots though.

I've chosen to give zero f*s about the 'rules' about coloured tights eg I'm too old, they're outdated etc
I'm 50 and still have the legs I had as a teenager and I refuse to put them away!!

Very short skirts/dresses and coloured tights with ankle boots is my favourite autumn/winter look Grin

I'm 36 and love coloured tights. I have a drawer full of them... going for mustard today I think.

This is inspiring. I have good legs but never wear dresses for some reason. Just ordered grey tights from Snag. Will try brighter colours if they suit.

Yes, I've got tights in loads of colours and patterns. Ridiculous ones and fabulous ones. Wear what you fancy.
I'm going to go and rummage through the drawer and find some good quality Italian ones.

I absolutely love coloured tights.

I don't even have particularly good legs like a pp, I just prefer dresses and skirts to trousers.

This week I've had navy blue, dark bottle green, grey and mustard tights on.

The navy blue ones were with tan loafers, a navy pinafore dress and white blouse.

The dark green with a autumn toned floral dress with tan boots and a green cardigan

The grey with grey boots in the same shade, a grey cotton dress, white blouse and slouchy cozy grey cardigan.

Today I'm wearing thick skin toned tights with a floaty multi coloured /patchwork effect silk skirt with lots of pale blue/lilac /pale pink in it, a dusty pink peasant shirt, wide tan belt and sparkly gold pointed pumps.

Snag tights are bloody fabulous. Almost all of mine are from there including a couple of very cozy wooly pairs that are wonderfully soft and not at all itchy.

I only wear black tights if I'm wearing black clothes tbh

I'm 31 and don't intend to stop any time soon.

I live in a very boring and quite deprived suburb of a creative city. No one who lives locally really dresses like me (they seem to have a uniform of over inflated lips, sports leggings, ugly chunky trainers, t shirts and those dreadful knee length bubble coats that look like you're wearing a sleeping bag. All very dreary dark colours and not for me.)

If I go into the city centre, especially the more creative and less corporate /tourism areas there are plenty of people who look like me.

I'm 43 and overweight and am quite happy to wear coloured tights. If other people think I look stupid that's on them, not me.

I generally wear black, navy or grey, but sometimes I crack out the yellow if I'm wearing dark grey and it's a miserable day. I've got lots of other colours but it seems to be yellow I gravitate towards to.

idontlikealdi · 13/11/2021 10:24

I love coloured tights! Age has nothing to do with it. Dress, tights, dms.

There is a fabulous woman on my commute who always wears heels, a beret, coloured tights. She must be 70 odd.

thedevilinablackdress · 13/11/2021 11:22

@gufo I'd probably just go with navy or black in that instance. Adding another colour in might be too much. Depends on the rest of your outfit mind you.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/11/2021 12:17

If you start dressing older you’ll look older. You’ll know yourself if you’ve got it wrong.

BrennieGirl · 13/11/2021 12:37

I might need a coloured tights intervention.

Yes, I have pink, purple, orange and I think green. I wear them with plain and smart clothes as a pop of colour and love it. Pink and navy is awesome, tights from snags

Thighdentitycrisis · 13/11/2021 13:12

Any recommendations apart from Snag?

Colourful tights are lovely- I want some more

My favourite red ones are from John Lewis.
@thedevilinablackdress thank you, I think I'm having a wardrobe crisis since I hit 40 Blush and wondering if some things are too "young" for me. It's a bit ridiculous isn't it.
See I don't think it is ridiculous, I think all the "wear whatever you like and don't worry about it" is a myth. I mean the sentiment is true but not when taken literally, because most of us want to do more than just not be naked, we want to feel we look "good" whatever that means to us. If we don't pay any attention to what we wear beyond if we like it on the hangar in the shop, how do we know whether we look our version of "good" or not?

It's an undeniable fact that we change as we age, at least in some small ways and for some the change is dramatic. Whilst we can wear whatever we like, I think it's important to try on the whole outfit and look in a full length mirror to decide if it works or not.

When younger we can wear whatever and it seems mostly to look "good" maybe because the blank canvas of youth suits anything? Or maybe because we expect young people to make mistakes, in general, so they're not being held to such high standards in anything, so less noticeable if it looks awful? But once our personality and life experiences are etched into our faces then sometimes, a particular look doesn't work on a particular individual. Or might only work with a different hairstyle, makeup style or accessories which you don't currently have.

I think fashion is primarily aimed at the young and the clothes are aimed at young bodies which tend to be a different shape to a middle aged body that's maybe produced a few DC or is going through menopause, or an aging body that's lost muscle tone and is sagging. It's natural to question our approach to dressing. It's the people who don't who can end up looking somehow "off".

I don't dress in any one particular style. With some styles I'll wear colored tights. It's less about the style for me and more about do the colours match and how much do the tights stand out. Sometimes they sort of blend in with the outfit other times they're the focal point and I'll keep everything else low-key.

Thighdentitycrisis · 13/11/2021 15:14

@BrennieGirl
Thanks I’ll look there

schoolsoutforever · 13/11/2021 18:32

I LOVE coloured tights (including mustard yellow). I don’t care what anybody thinks and I think I look good. I also love woolly tights. I have no idea if I’m a bit boho…? Maybe…
