I used to wear this stuff when I was 16-21, (which would have been 1990 onwards) we also bought army surplus rucksacks and embroidered into them, usually peace symbols and ban the bomb.. The skirts often had little mirrors on and were very long and swishy!

We wore patchouli oil or sandalwood and due to being in the north we shopped mostly at Afflecks Palace in Manchester. We loved the Stone Roses, The Doors, The Smiths, Velvet Underground, etc. Glastonbury was very different then, no paps or celebs in Hunter wellies all over it.

I also wore those very long tiny necklaces made up of thousands of multicoloured beads. When one snapped, as they invariably would, you could still find random beads near the skirting boards 20 yrs later Grin
We wore the dyed tights and woven bracelets.

Anyway I saw these items on ebay and it was such a blast from the past. It is amazing how the sensorial element of a particular time can crash back in.

And not forgetting the Docs. I still wear those. I still wear long skirts but don't reek of patchouli (prefer Guerlain) and prefer more minimal designs/fabrics and colours nowadays.
We didnt call it 'hippy' but it was classed as alternative, to a point. I mean, we used to hold burning joysticks in nightclubs whilst swaying around dreamily when The Sunday's were playing......

I was wearing similar things in 1980 - Phool was a brand I remember
Afghan coats and Indian print

ODFOgrinch · 09/11/2021 22:10

I dressed like this in the early 80s.
Plimsolls or clogs, footless tights, long skirts, vest top or embroidered shirt.
By the late 80s I was washing my hair again and sometimes wore a shorter skirt with thigh high heeled boots and a fringed waistcoat.
So many tassels, so much incense. My youngest Dd is 17 and has rejected all my influences. So she is rebelling by lighting incense and decorating her room with mandalas and sari fabric with little brass elephants. I'm obviously not going to tell her that my first student shared house room was identical! Grin

Magpie1976 · 09/11/2021 22:17

This was me too! Tie dye skirts with tassles and tiny mirrors. Stripy tights. Docs. Canvas doodled army satchel. Afflecks Palace. Lots of other great shops in the north. Listening to the smiths, the cure, stone roses etc. Happy days.

Magpie1976 · 09/11/2021 22:18

@SallyOMalley

Anyone here from Leeds / West Yorkshire? Remember the Dark Arches with all the little stalls? And the Corn Exchange before it got gentrified!
I remember! The corn exchange was great. And later on Brighton beach
Gherkingreen · 09/11/2021 22:22

Maxi skirts, fitted vests, a lot of silver bracelets and DMs, Alanis hair, Afflecks on a Saturday, indie music (still LOVE The Sundays OP Grin)
That was me as a teenager in the 90s (minus the joss sticks, cannot stand the smell of those things)

Bettybantz · 09/11/2021 22:24

For some reason it was German Army jackets. Not sure why that was. And yy to para boots, and those woven rucksacks with band names written on them in marker pen.

Oversized crochet jumpers. Tiny braids with beads.

Some of the boys wore those massive woven hoodies with combat pants and all their T-shirts were in XL

StepawayfromtheBiscuittin · 09/11/2021 22:28

@Pheasantlysurprised
Dewberry. Oh god I am surprised the smell isn't still coming out of my pores.
Still love the BodyShop though...

I have a hankering for one of those skirts again now. If anyone knows where id get one online please share your wisdom!

RacketeerRalph · 09/11/2021 22:32

@paradyning

Is Afflecks still there!! There was a tiny shop in Chester too near MacDonalds that did this look too spent far too long in both places. We called ourselves Moshers.
It is. I don't recommend you go though. It very very nearly closed down a few years ago and has never quite been the same since. Still brilliant to introduce a young teen to though.
BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 09/11/2021 22:38

@Pheasantlysurprised

I had a burgundy velvet blazer in 1992 when I was 18. I bought it from Afflecks in manchester, for around £5. It was the same quality as something that would set you back £300 now, cotton and silk velvet, rather than polyester. The difference is remarkable, and the prices now, for utter flimsy shite, are astounding.

Best to look on ebay than NetaPorter.

Oh god so did I, I cannot believe I got rid of it.

Flip! Flip was amazing for stuff like that.

Oh I'm sad now. Getting old is fucking depressing.

Lovely thread OP. Sent me back to 1990 in a flash!

This was us at Uni in the mid 1970s 😬😬😱😱😂

Waves to fans of the old Leeds Corm Exchange and Dark Arches - remember Paradylic? You could feel the vibrations from the trains going overhead in and out of Leeds station as you shopped for your incense and embroidered bits and bobs. Such a shame Dark Arches is no more - it was unique.

I still have henna hair, docs and stripy tights, by the way! Some things don’t change. Grin

Bettybantz · 09/11/2021 23:31

@StepawayfromtheBiscuittin have a look at the Karmic Chameleon. I bet they have some. I have these trousers for lounging round the house, but they are creeping their way out into the open more frequently. I absolutely love them 😊

I loved the Leeds Corn Exchange. I've still got earrings from a stall in there. And the Dark Arches! And that shop in the arcades - Boodleem/Boodliem or something?
Pheasantlysurprised · 09/11/2021 23:38

happy to hear some of you havent changed!

What a great thread! We used to wear this in the first year (now yr 7) @ 1989; black tassel skirt, Chinese slippers and a grey cardi from the men’s section of M&S. We used to buy tiny bottles of perfume oil from Head In The Clouds in Norwich! Heather shimmer rimmel lipstick and sun-in to complete the look Grin

bizboz · 10/11/2021 00:48

@RaisinFlapjack

Did anyone else have a new agey shop that sold individual beads you could use to create your own earrings?
Yes! The Brighton Bead shop. I wonder whatever happened to the many wonderful necklaces I created there.
LoveFall · 10/11/2021 01:43

Yes! We had a bead store in Vancouver at the Granville Island Public Market. Such fun. It was next door to a place called Paper Ya that had lots of of gorgeous papers, even handmade.

Wiredforsound · 10/11/2021 05:26

What a lovely thread! I was a student in Liverpool and loved Quiggans where amongst other things I got my first pair of DMs and an amazing vintage emerald green velvet ‘opera’ coat that I still wear occasionally today. We’d go up to Manchester regularly to see friends and have a good rummage in Affleks Palace for second hand Levi’s and swirly skirts. I’d completely forgotten about this. I never though I had a ‘style’ growing up, but this definitely was my style!

NadiaVulvokov · 10/11/2021 05:31

I was very much like this in my early teens, but at the goth end. So those long black embroidered skirts with fringing and the little mirrors sewn in worn with Docs. And lots of rows from my guidance teacher about school uniform being navy not black or purple. Eyeliner for days.

In my mid teens there was a phase heavily influenced by Bowie and glam rock so lots of vintage clothes, back combed hair, silver platform sandals; false eyelashes and again eyeliner for days.

That evolved into a kind of lounge lizard look with snakeskin shirts, knee high suede boots, mini skirts and one of those long 70s leather jackets with a big collar. Again eyeliner for days but as I was in my heavily techno/clubbing days I usually danced so hard that by the end of the club my eyeliner has disappeared and my hair and clothes were soaked through.

That evolved into a flower power/psychedelic look with aline minis, acid coloured tops, lots of hippyish florals and old school trainers. Much easier the feet than the platforms and boots when dancing til dawn and traipsing round squat parties and few festivals. But still the eyeliner.

misssunshine4040 · 10/11/2021 06:37

@Pheasantlysurprised

Hair was rarely straightened either, the wilder the better. There were varying levels of.....dedication, I suppose I was on the milder end. I never wore patchwork and didnt like striped tights.

Don't recall clogs though. It was usually cherry docs or converse here.
There was a really dreamy, floaty element to it, I remember one girl (aptly named Layla) had a very neat short bob with a perfectly cut fringe, she was quite petite but wore the longest most flowing clothes in all manner of bohemian patterns. She had the cat eyeliner and such large blue eyes - I wonder if she still has the look...She would have looked perfect in an indie band line up. Does anyone recall the band 'Lush'? Like that!

Yes!! I recently downloaded lush single girl and ladykillers. I miss those days so much where fashion really was an expression merged into the music rather than this basic media love island inspired bland stuff. The 90's were the best days
Craftycorvid · 10/11/2021 08:30

@thenightsky Ah yes, Boodlum! I remember that. And there was a great second hand book stall in Dark Arches, too. Leeds Council tried to ‘gentrify’ the place and of course it just destroyed its wonderful eclectic character. Dark Arches was great back when you had to fight your way around all sorts of random wares to find the prize.

Talipesmum · 10/11/2021 08:42

There was one on Neal Street in Covent Garden - we used to go there when we were staying with relatives and it was my favourite place to be - I’d spend hours in there, choosing. I still miss it.

Talipesmum · 10/11/2021 08:43

That was in reply to the bead shop comment!!
