The new rule isn’t Vinted, it is HMRC. HMRC are now requiring online market places such as Vinted and Ebay to report to them anyone who sells (I think) more than £1000 or 30 items in a tax year. This doesn’t mean you will need to pay any tax on the sales, unless you have actually been making a profit relative to what you paid. So selling on used clothes is absolutely fine, and if HMRC did ask for details you could easily explain that you have made no profit.

It is less clear to me that selling on lots of items from advent calendars and gift sets is fine - most of the time you are actually making a profit relatively to what you actually paid for that one item in the set/calendar. If your ebay/Vinted sales on these items are material, it may be worth considering tax implications.

That's really interesting, isn't it? Selling a few unwanted things is unlikely to over the cost of the calendar but how would you allocate the initial cost per item? Some sort of basic ratio allied to the notional retail cost? I would imagine in that situation it's fine though. But as you say, if you're buying multiple calendars and only keeping a couple of products, while making a profit on the cost of the calendar with everything else, where would HMRC see you sitting, given that Vinted will only see you selling each small individual item?

Thelifeofawife · 19/05/2025 11:12

This is what is concerning me. I bought a few AC’s and sold off the products I didn’t want, kept the rest. So technically I’ve not made a monetary profit, but I have got some of the items I wanted for free.
I have also sold a lot having wardrobe clear outs.
However, I don’t think either of these should
have triggered anything because I thought the HMRC rules came in on 1st April, during which time I’ve only sold a few things. Though I could have that wrong

AprilLady · 19/05/2025 11:19

@Doubleraspberry you effectually need to consider the cost of good sold - and yes, doing a ratio of price paid to RRP and then using this proportion of RRP for each item would be one obvious way of doing it. I’d say if you sold enough to recoup the price of the calendar but still have quite a few items, you probably have made a profit?

Any approach would just need to be an approach HMRC thought was reasonable in the circumstances - assuming that the overall amounts involved are still relatively small. I expect if you’re reselling many thousands worth of stuff on ebay each year, HMRC would expect you to be keeping proper records and accounting for it accordingly.

@Thelifeofawife I think the rules came in for the latest tax year? So will cover the period 6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025?

Luckily not for me - I’ve never sold beauty stuff on there. I was just wondering for others!

I ‘recoup’ about 10% of my cost on most of the stuff I sell.

AprilLady · 19/05/2025 11:21

And just to be clear. HMRC’s rules haven’t changed - it has always been a requirement to report and pay tax on I think more than £1000 worth of goods sold on ebay where you did make a profit. What has changed is the requirement for ebay and Vinted to provide information to HMRC themselves.

Thelifeofawife · 19/05/2025 11:43

@AprilLady Thanks for the clarification.
I would think that given I have only made a few pounds here and there on clothes that cost significantly more, then sold off some beauty products, it should balance out to not making an overall profit, or only a minimal one.

I just don’t like the idea of giving my NI number to eBay/Vinted.

I also think it’s wrong if you’re just selling off your old clothes & household items, regardless of how much you make.

My cult beauty order shipped from the £50 voucher 'mistake'. Very happy because I wondered if they would cancel. So I will have a full size Hourglass bronzer for £6. Softens the blow of them changing the recycle scheme a little.

Isabelle70 · 19/05/2025 23:30

I made three recycle.me deposits last week and posted them on Friday and by lunchtime today I received my credit. One more deposit to make this week and I can then treat myself before the terms change.

Pickled21 · 20/05/2025 07:31

I always find it takes ages for my credit to come through on the Lf app. For my last deposit, recycle me requested the points be added on the 14th of May and they still haven't been added. Does anyone else have the same issue? I wanted to do another 2 to 3 deposits before the deadline but think it's probably better to do them with cultbeauty instead as I'll likely get my points before the deadline?

nearly61 · 20/05/2025 08:02

@Pickled21 yes me too -drives me mad waiting for the credit to appear on LF. It's always about 2 weeks for me. I'm still waiting on 2 credits to appear but think I will try one more in June under the new scheme so I get, hopefully, 5 to use together on a final blast. It's not worth doing after that for me. Has been great while it lasted though!

BakeOffRewatch · 20/05/2025 11:34

I did my first recycle:me credit last week, and the Cult Beauty rewards for both say “in progress” on the recycle:me app. How long does it take to go through the first time on Cult Beauty?

Thank you for mentioning it on here! I’ve missed the hey day but I’m trying to get through all my minis to get the May and June maximum drops before June 11th.

Roundaboot · 20/05/2025 12:42

I've re-read the email from recycle:me and it says that rewards have to be selected before 11 June. Given that you can select your reward when you send the items, I'm taking that to mean as I should be able to claim Look Fantastic credit on packages sent before 11 June.

It has made me do a big push to use up and clear out nearly finished and old products, which is good I suppose! But I will miss it when it's gone.
