Can you recommend a decent lip salve/balm? I have a budget of about £20. They're so sore and chapped and it's not even that cold yet.

Vaseline, definitely.

TheSpottedZebra · 03/11/2021 21:27

EA 8hr cream ( but the Aldi dupe is instore now so could be worth a try? ) or the O'keeffe's.

You've not changed your toothpaste have you? I've ended up with awfully chapped lips just by using a slightly different one.

shoofly · 03/11/2021 21:29

Carmex definitely

olivo · 03/11/2021 21:29

Molten brown for when they're really sore then Burts bees. Mine are awful now we are back to school with heating on, I'm so dry!

tsmainsqueeze · 03/11/2021 21:31

espa pink pomelo lip balm , best one I've tried after using carmex for years .
about 13.00 lasts ages.

Thatsplentyjack · 03/11/2021 21:32

Vaseline. The little tubs. I've carried one with me for almost 20 years (not the same one) I very rarely leave the house without one, and put it on multiple times a day and my lips and always soft. I've tried loads of difficult ones bit nothing else is as good.

Purpleberet · 03/11/2021 21:33

I swear by nuxe honey lip balm every night when my lips get dry in winter. I think it costs about a tenner but it lasts a long time just using it once a day before bed.
Day to day Ive tried loads but always go back to carmex! The one in the pot which is a bit annoying for using throughout the day but works better than the tubes.

M0rT · 03/11/2021 21:35

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour is brilliant. Lasts for ages as it doesn't even need to be used daily. Slather for a day or two and they heal up very well.
It works on sore noses from colds and rashes too.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 03/11/2021 21:35

I agree with Lansinoh nipple salve made for breastfeeding. Mine got to the stage where they cracked and bled if I smiled or talked once, a couple of years ago. People recommending bliseze or vaseline probably haven't been at that point - you need to fix the problem first before maintenance level stuff works. Then you need to be aware 95% of products might actually aggrivate your lips and be careful what you use once healed. I found beeswax and sheabutter work for me for maintenance, but all the Chapstick and blisteze type products actually cause the chapping to reoccur.

Good luck, its quite a debilitating"minor" problem and usually caused by stress (lip licking is a stress tick for a lot of people with really severe chapped lips to the point of bleeding). Its important to try and break the lip licking habit if that might apply to you, before it becomes so deeply ingrained it persists after the intensely stressful period is over.

ohtwatbollocks · 03/11/2021 21:39

I use bepanthen but that's because it gets sore all around my mouth, not just my lips, works well though!

Lanaa · 03/11/2021 21:40

You need Blistex. Ignore the cold sore suggestions - It's brilliant for chapped, sore lips. They stopped making the original for a while so tubes are going for upto £100 on eBay but this is the American version and is the same.

Put it in all day and at night pop it on and "seal" It with Vaseline l/ you'll wake up with new lips.

I've tried almost every recommendation on this thread and this stuff is the best.

Lanisoh nipple balm. Lasts forever as well.

PiousPenelope · 03/11/2021 21:54

Lasinoh nipple cream or blistex or paw paw.

Namechangeforone · 03/11/2021 21:56

I find vaseline drying and it makes my lips very sore. In fact most lip balms are rubbish.

I recommend Nuxe reve de miel. About ten quid I think. Truly moisturising, gentle, smells great, lasts ages.

Dragonfire282 · 03/11/2021 21:57

I just wanted to say that if you're still struggling with this after a few weeks it might be worth seeing your gp. Last winter my lips were so cracked, the skin was peeling off, so so sore. I spent am absolute fortune on lip balms and nothing made any difference. In desperation I spoke to my gp who prescribed me daktocort (I think thats what it was, it was a steroid and anti fungal cream) and they heeled up within a couple of days.

Dragonfire282 · 03/11/2021 21:59

It was Daktarin.

Dragonfire282 · 03/11/2021 22:01

And I've just had a look and you can buy it over the counter in boots.

Dancingonmoonlight · 03/11/2021 22:03

My lips and my DC's get like this.
I have tried so many - including Carmex, Vaseline, O Keeffes, Blistex, Nuxe, Paw Paw, Elizabeth Arden and numerous lipstick shaped ones.

A previous poster is right. Its a deficiency. None of the above OTC treatments will solve the problem.
A visit to your GP, stay hydrated and nipple cream to help soothe.

FrazzledY9Parent · 03/11/2021 22:07

I've tried almost everything on this thread and find paw paw the best by far, followed by Lanisoh, followed by Blistex. Paw paw really is magic stuff but you have to get the one that's not adulterated with other stuff:

GinasGirl · 03/11/2021 22:24

Elizabeth Arden's 8hr is just the best! I use it year after year and a little goes a long way.

doadeer · 03/11/2021 22:28

I use a lip mask at night and through the day. The laniege one it's lovely

Chocolateteabag · 03/11/2021 23:00

If they are really sore - a blob of Vagisil cream takes the edge off the "sting" then vaseline
Vagisil has lidocaine in it - safe for your foof so also safe for your upper lips Grin

Tweetypietwo · 04/11/2021 10:40

If they are really sore and cracked I use this www.boots.com/blistex-medplus-repairing-lip-balm-spf15-7ml-10165250 only thing that works. Someone recommended it to meabout 7 years ago when my kips were particular dry red and cracked and I've used it since! vaseline does nothing for me. I also use this daily which is very moisturising m.feelunique.com/p/Ultrasun-Lip-Protection-SPF50-48ml

dunkaccino · 04/11/2021 10:46

Don't use vaseline - those saying they use it multiple times a day don't seem to see it as a bad thing. You shouldn't need to continously apply a lip balm if it works.

Chippymunks · 04/11/2021 11:39

Why not use Vaseline? My DH comes back from ski holidays with his lips in a real state and the Vaseline sorts them out in about a day and a half.
