Oversized Trend

itsnotmeitsu · 02/11/2021 23:27

We seem to have moved away from 'boyfriend' and now it's called 'oversized'. But it's obviously still a trend in coats, jackets, etc.

My question; 'Can you get away with this trend if you're short(ish) and getting on a bit?'

I've replaced my raincoat with a John Lewis one, which is described as 'oversized' online. It arrived today and I love the colours (seaside-ish) and design, but will I just look like a gnome going fishing to everybody else? I'm 5'3". It wasn't cheap, but if my past history is anything to go on I'll own it for years and years. Can't post a photo because my phone died from lack of software updates. Can I make this work? It's only a mac after all, but it definately dwarfs me.

I never know what ‘get away with’ means. You buy something, you like how it looks on you, you wear it. What more is required? Who else’s permission do you need?

And clothes are intended to give a human being presence - to mark each of us out as our individual selves (unless living in a commune-ist, anti-individualising state). Surely your individual presence should grow as you mature, not diminish?

Wear the damn coat!

And get some great boots to wear with it.

(What are you going to do about your phone? My sympathies …)

I’ve forever worn clothes that are too big for me! Finally on trend.

If you like the look of it on you keep it?

ILoveShula · 03/11/2021 06:50

I'm about your height and I wouldn't. I usually go for a parka style or a showerproof

I have one good overcoat and I knew when I bought it that I would always love it. It's a few decades old and I still love it.

If you love it, keep it. If you are not sure, return it.

Can you share a link?
I love an oversized item to the extent it’s a bit of a family joke. For me the trick to carrying it off is to have one tiny body part or pieces of clothing etc that is “skinny” (I’m not skinny but I have bits that are). That’s not just skinny jeans, it can be just ankles, wrists, collarbones are even slim fit shoes or boots.
There is a school mum who must be shorter than you (and very average sized body) and she always rocks oversized, I was admiring her outfit yesterday (big coat, wide leg trousers) but the thing that made it work is that her trousers were slightly cropped and she was wearing converse high tops thus creating the “skinny” contrast. Nothing gnome like there.
I realise this sounds like hard work, my wardrobe is built around this style so i can manage it day to day and incorporate new oversized bits.
Obviously you can just think F it and wear the thing you love and be dry in the rain. You may walk past me one day and think “gosh her ankles must be cold and wet” and they will be…
@EdmontinaDancesWithOphelia I’m intrigued by your coat,

EdmontinaDancesWithOphelia · 03/11/2021 07:05

I was going through a Camiel Fortgens phase.

(Actually still there. Hopeless.)

Lunaballoon · 03/11/2021 07:05

I hate the ‘oversized’ look and/or vanity sizing, particularly for us ‘shorties’.

I had to size down to a 6 when I bought a Hush jacket. Even now I can only wear it with a thick jumper or it just hangs off me.

ILoveShula · 03/11/2021 07:19

I'm ok with an oversised jumper or coat but not trousers - I don't do wide bottoms.

Small feet freak me out a bit - not so much the feet, they will probably be in proportion to the height and frame, but someone wearing cheap ballerinas or keds-type shoes when the rest of them is chunky.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 03/11/2021 07:28

Tricky

Do you like how you look in it?

I like the oversized trend, but I don’t like it for coats Grin

ILoveShula · 03/11/2021 07:57

I knew there was something wrong a few years ago when I had to take a pair of size 6 jeans back to M&S. I think they've recalibrated the sizing now, thank goodness.

On the subject of vanity sizing, a few weeks I found the perfect skirt, new with tags, in a charity shop. Perfect, i've wasted hours if not days searching on eBay for something similar, but it was size 12, The quality suggested that it was vintage. Took it home and it was just right.

If you see someone in a nice wool midi kilt looking smug...

OhMyCrump · 03/11/2021 08:01

I'm 5'2 and took an oversize winter coat back recently. I find i like the style with the coat open, and when you look up images of people wearing for ideas how to style they are always open.
As soon as you do them up I just look ridiculous, and it's cold here, I need to do it up.

TuftyRusty · 03/11/2021 08:12

I have a very oversized, calf length rain coat, which I love and wear a lot. I really like oversized stuff generally - I have lots of big jumpers and wide leg trousers. I also borrow DH’s stuff a lot - like shirts and stuff.

If you love it on you, definitely keep it. But… if it feels a bit awkward/difficult to wear or only goes with certain things, I’d say send it back - you just won’t wear it as much. If it’s something you intend to wear for many years you might want something easy to just throw on over anything.

ILoveShula · 03/11/2021 08:24

I always do up my coat.

I have got an oversized quilted but not puffy bomber but not worn it yet. I'll wear it with skinny jeans or wombats and DMs probably.

TheCategoryIs · 03/11/2021 08:49

For me it's about how you feel not just how it looks. Oversized makes me feel 'frumpy', I don't like things that feel like they have too much fabric, I hate loose or too long sleeves where you are constantly ruching them up. I feel dragged down and not put together. It's partly my figure not suiting it (small frame but massive boobs) but also just a personal preference. I prefer a close, neat fit.

Floisme · 03/11/2021 09:00

I'm the same height as you op and I love an oversized look, always have. The style rulers would probably advise me to step away but I can live with that.

However I think there's a difference between oversize and too big. I've never really managed to work out where the tipping point lies but I've been trying on some oversize blazers recently and I've noticed that the best ones still fit well at certain points, e.g. at the shoulders. The sleeves are pre-folded over so they look like they were originally too long but they're not if that makes sense. So it's as much about the shape and the silhouette as the size itself I think.

ILoveShula · 03/11/2021 09:03

Me too. If it feels wrong or it bothers me, then it's no good.

I like a skimming sort of fit, not tight but not loose.
I have a bust but don't want to make a feature of it.

dudsville · 03/11/2021 09:06

I love the look. I'm pondering getting a new coat because the duvet coat just looks so damn cosy. I don't need strangers to know I have a waist.

ILoveShula · 03/11/2021 09:10

@dudsville, get one. It's cold out there.

pictish · 03/11/2021 09:28

Oversize swamps me…there’s no definition and I feel like I’m wearing a dust sheet. I like things to skim, not billow. I’m 5ft 4 and a size 8/10. I’m 46. Maybe if I had a more petite and slender frame I could pull it off. As it is with my thighs and bum, oversize = frumpy.

Craftycorvid · 03/11/2021 09:30

Well, this is an observation from a short woman who owns a harlequin patterned velvet coat and wears it with pride. If you feel great and something makes you feel happy inside when you wear it, chances are that will show on your face and you will look great. Also, go colourful! November can be monochrome once the leaves drop. Be a vivid autumn leaf in the rain, OP!

Ooh this. I do agree. If you just love wearing something, chances are you’ll pull it off.
mewkins · 03/11/2021 09:47

I can't do oversized and I'm pretty tall. It just looks like a less flattering version of normal sized. I have seen young girls all wearing the oversized shacket thing and think it looks OK. But just reminds me of wearing a checked shirt open over a top in the 90s. Coats look OK oversized if left open but not on me Grin

RunnerDown · 03/11/2021 09:54

I think it depends on the individual if you can pull it off - not your age or height. We all suit different things. I would wear an oversize jumper with the dreaded skinny jeans but the oversize coats just look silly and not stylish in the least. I can do wide leg trousers with a skinny top but not midi/ maxi dresses unless they are vaguely fitting. I can do short wide dresses. Must depend on proportions to some extent.
I’m a short arse size 8 and pear shaped

ILoveShula · 03/11/2021 09:55

I go wrong when I wear what I think I should wear, but feel good if I wear what I like. I wear dungarees because the shoulder downwards seems longer so I feel taller.

Any more suggesions @Craftycorvid?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 03/11/2021 10:25

Is it comfy? I can't really do oversized (I think I'd size down in an "oversized" item so it was a bit neater) and recently bought one of these oversized khaki quilted jackets, I got my normal size and it was falling off me as it was a slippery fabric, just not right. So I would say if you can wear it comfortably and are happy with the look of it (it doesn't make you look loads bigger for instance!) then it's OK.

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2021 10:35

The sooner these oversized waste of material garments go out of fashion the better as far as I'm concerned. I don't think they look good on anyone.
